@@owell179 Yessir! I used to work in logging, and the skidders would have Detroits in them, and you could definitely hear where ever they were at now! It's just like you said, you could hear them for miles. I love Detroits, they're a very tough diesel engine. They can take way more abuse than most others, and the more you make em scream with a good load, it's like the more they like it! They're made to scream, not just lug around.

the compression ratio does not mean a lot.
You have to know at wich pressure they are turbocharged too.
Nowadays tdi engines have from 15/17 to 1 compression ratio but higher output than before for the same displacement, but they are turbocharged at 1.5 bars....while it was 0.5 to 0.8 bars before on the indirect injection.

You are not driving that right. That engine will turn 2800, so bring it there. Peak torque is 2200. You shouldn’t even go below 1800 unless coasting to a stop. And you definitely should not be pulling at 1500 rpm. 53 series Detroit’s are not meant to be driven like a 6bt Cummins.

I always wondered what a 3-71 would be like in a pickup, most say a 4-53 is a better choice.

The 371 is bigger by one cubic inch but I think the 4 cylinder could be better for high way use

371 is taller. That would be the biggest hurdle, unless you cut a hole in the hood.
