I once made a character that was rick Astley. He was a Druid, so he could shape shift, and often just shapeshifted into an ant, and reappeared singing in front of random people to rick roll them. He is also #4 most eligible bachelor.
In the campaign I was in, Rick Astley was an eldritch horror from the Far Realm. Speaking of which, since I failed a trial he almost yeeted me there until the warlock used the Fates card. It technically never happened, but the DM said I have weird memories and nightmares of this haunting song and a tentacle-armed Rick Astley singing the song menacingly.

Don't forget about the ones where you accidentally make a character that resembles an established character in pop-culture. For example, I once made an Oracle in the Pathfinder rule-set, and chose "Wind" as my Mystery power, because I liked the perks, which included the ability to throw lighting bolts and fly. As the campaign progressed, my favorite spell to use in combat was Spiritual Weapon, which produced a magical flying hammer. By about 6th level, one of the other players suddenly piped up, "OMG! You character is Thor!". And I had to stop for a moment and think about it, then realized ... crap, I *DID* make Thor...
Regardless of whether there are two or three characters in this party, I have to agree No but really, Oxford commas are useful in situations like this lol
I accidentally made Fiona from the fourth Shrek movie but like also not. I started with she's a damsels who is not in destress anymore. So I was like obviously she's a barbarian. As I was writting her backstory I decided on her being a sea elf. And then, like two days before I played her I was like, "hold the phone. She's just Fiona." But at that point I was committed to her character and design so I went with it.
A friend of mine brought with him... 1:Master Splinter from Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles. 2: Puss in boots from Shrek. 3: Nick Wilde from Zootopia. As PETS! And all of them had pictures of those characters as their tokens. He also made himself Judy Hopps, and I almost got kicked from the group because I told him to stop bringing characters from kids movies into the game.
One time everyone in the party I was playing with was a Jojo's reference but me because I was the only one who hadn't watched it at that point. After having watched the show now, litterally everything anyone said or did was just a Jojo's referance
meanwhile my party at first though that my character is jojo refference, they were suprised i dont get jojokes, funny thing after googling i learned that the only thing what my rogue shares with that character is only first name and actualy my character is indeed refference of something, basicaly garret from thief (first one) and nobody got refference so far even after i doused torches with water arrows probably because the only special thing about him is how he doesnt stab everyone

My first character that I made was a very wholesome dyslexic wizard with a spellbook purely made of pictures and diagrams that he drew himself. When he saw a giant dust cloud looking out the window of an Inn, his first thought was "Gee, I hope everyone with asthma is okay"
One of my favorite DND campaigns was one where the DM specifically wanted us to clone our characters. We had a table consisting of the terminator, samus, sailor moon. And Reno jackson. And it was an absolute blast. And a totally diffrent way of playing dnd. Instead of adopting a persona. Or playing as "your mc" sometimes it's fun to drop in a pre-established character and think amongst your table on "how would the terminator communicate with sailer moon" and more often then not the end result is an absolute riot. Is this the best way to play? No probably not. And alot of the DND snobs with scoff at the idea of "restraining the limitless creativity of the game" by blatantly making a party of plagiarized characrers. But at the end of the day my friend group plays dnd to have fun. So that's what we'll do. And i reccomend trying this out at your friend table sometime as well.
Doing this with the express idea of 'This is gonna be an absolute shitshow and we are all gonna laugh until we cry' sounds amazing. Totally want to do this.
I literally made Garfield once using the power of Homebrew Content. It’s literally a damn cat that doesn’t like to move, influenced by personality and class.
I’d put forth the idea that there’s a 4th type. Players who try to emulate abilities and play style of a character, but without the looks or personality of said character. It’s like playing a web slinging Character, but she’s a chaotic neutral thief that robs trains and dresses up as a witch Sure their playstyle is copying Spider-Man, but that’s about it.
I'd fall into this category. I have been struggling to build a character with Doomguy's abilities and powers but much more calm and calculating since that's how I play Doom.
I made a Paladin Monk Iron Fist playstyle. Had 2 levels of warlock though. used eldritch blast for long range and used the warlock slots for free smites.
I’ve got a character with general chronomancy-related abilities, namely stopping time, and carries a shitload of knives. No for fuck’s sake it’s not DIO. The party still hasn’t figured out i’m a touhou fan.
What if an entire game was based around cloners and you made it an isekai. You could have a hilarious game with Krieg from Borderlands as a tank berserker while steven universe had to fight alongside him as a paladin. Add some serious characters along with them, and you might have a funny yet practical party.
I had two different versions of Krieg, one became what I call the horseman of pestilence thanks to Brovia campaign, the other ended being a human who was more dragon that any dragon born could ever be.
I am the DM of my group. I have a player who really loves Persona and wanted to play Joker, the protagonist from p5. I allowed it and created a story reason for him to be there, not as someone else like him, or an alternate version of him, but instead the original having been dragged through a portal and trying to get home. It's more complex than that, obviously, but that aspect of the story and world building made the game more fun for everyone. I got to add other characters in similar situations and watch as he roleplayed having no idea how the heck to get out of this realm or what was popular there. It helped that the character had different ways to play it in the original game that he came from. Cloners aren't always so bad, and it was clear that everyone was having fun with it. In the end, that's what matters.
Dont worry, I totally plan on playing as a channeler (fan made class for 5th edition) that basically gives you a stand that is moody blues and the world/star platinum mixed together whenever I actually get a chance to play the game ;-;
I know right? I was kinda weirded out by it at first, but having that radiant damage output has been a life saver. You're right, he is a sun soul monk, and he's definitely no min maxer. Dude's lowest stats are his intelligence and wisdom, just what you would expect from Goku

I'm the type of person that would go very thematic into a character based off other things. Like my Illusion School Wizard "Rhodney Charles Crezki" started off as a "What if a illusionist/trickster/magician from our world had real powers? And he was basically a showman that I focused charisma on. His intelligence was from him studying new "tricks" to preform. He had sleight of hand + Deception & game card proficiency with Arcana and history as well. He could technically been a rogue (arcane trickster) but he's not like a rogue. His book was like a "Book of tricks", him having to "Prepare his tricks" like a showman have to prepare the stage, instead of just able to cast them willynilly like a sorcerer/warlock. His familiar was even a dove, that he used with magic tricks (By teleporting it around so it would appear in different places) and he mostly preformed for peasant people. This was a place with lowish magic fantasy. Basically, it was a setting where magic was practically only for nobles rather than the common folk. So few people have ever seen magic for real.
That's an epic concept. I actually thought of that idea a few times like: "What if I just made a wizard who became well known by being a birthday party magician" Sounds like you're one step ahead though!
So once I had this idea for a character called Lotus. She was a shapeshifter who was very mischievous and was the youngest in her family but was actually adopted. She was from a different race than everyone else but nobody knew because epic shapeshifter magic. I then realise I basically made genderswapped Loki down to the name without realising.
hooooooooooooooo boy, I had a cloner in a deadlands game, he tried to mimic Alexander Anderson from Hellsing, oh but not just regular Hellsing, from Hellsing Abriged and let me tell you any immersion I built up he destroyed without a thought, (that and there were crucial character details he failed to mention to me that resulted in a very messy encounter that killed pretty much the whole thing going forward). Its real hard to create a Spaghetti Western atmosphere when you have a preacher going around calling everyone a protestant fuck-bucket.
I Have Terrible Rolls I feel as if, with a little work, a psychotic preacher with a bayonet fetish spouting lines from Boondock Saints while gutting monsters would fit well into a spaghetti western so long as it wasn't the gritty type.

It might have had something to do with Thunderwave doing Thunder damage, ya know... sound..? Not lightning :Y. Shocking Grasp, Chain Lightning and Witch Bolt woulda made more sense
@@immortalstar0138 That is fair. And as this build was around a year old, I have tweaked it to fit most other Lightning spells, Thunderwave was mainly a first level option. Main reason Thunderwave was the go to in the first place was do to the fact that it worked the most similar to how Kaminari primary ability worked. (A sphere with an origin on the player.) That being said though, I've tweaked the build a lot and it actually works quite well now.

Seeing this reminds me of a video game RPG idea I had once. The plot would be a DM has been planning a special session of D&D (or some D&D parody for legal reasons) for a few weeks after a session with his friends. Because he was running some custom homebrew monsters and races, he allows his friends to make their own homebrew races and characters as long as they promised not to be too broken and ruin the fun. The players promised not to be OP and talked about it afterwards and were talking about character ideas until one of them had a hilarious concept he shared amongst them and they agreed to it. The day of the session he was greeted by a team of characters with clear inspiration to certain sci-fi heroes and are a team of space travelers who are checking out what was supposed to be a post apocalyptic Earth now brimming with life and crash landed onto it because they were shot down by people who mistook the vessel for a dragon or large armored bird. The DM goes along with it because he secretly planned to make the big bad of the campaign a clear homage to Darth Vader and Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine with an army of stormtrooper look-a-likes, and he actually had the friend who suggested it in on his plan, and told him to suggest the idea to the other players into making sci fi characters. In gameplay, the characters wouldn't be overpowered and would all have the same class roles as most RPGs like the fighter, the mage, the healer, the tank, the ranger, the rouge, and so one. Maybe one or two, maybe three depending on the player count you wanna go with, of the players actually made traditional D&D type fantasy characters and ard trying to take this seriously because the gods know the space idiots probably aren't. I could imagine the space players playing as sci-fi characters with clear inspiration, like a space marine, a hyper advanced android created to be close to human as possible with an arm cannon and large selection of weapons, a spartan super soldier, a galactic bounty hunter, and so on. Maybe they're a band of misfits like the Guardians of the Galaxy brought together from their adventures and misadventures or something.
I am actually guilty of cloning, but only because I the DM wanted me to play a fighter, and I didn't have any origional ideas for a fighter at the time. Therefore I cloned Minecraft Steve. A basic character for a basic class. Otherwise, I would have continued playing as my bookworm divination wizard, who seeks to preserve and promte the spread of information.
This makes me feel good about the fact that all of my characters thus far are inspired by *concepts* but none directly copy the appearance or personality of one character. Yuan-ti Pureblood Warlock: his patron used his body as a vessel, this warped his brain to be evil even though he was originally compassionate unlike the standard yuan-ti. Warforged Artificer: they believe they are human, and look it too. He’s intelligent and charming; sometimes talks out loud without meaning to but is a really nice guy. Elf Warlock: they have two personalities; one is the sweetest and kindest guy possible, the other is pure evil and the one who formed the bond with their patron. Tabaxi Sorcerer: As a shadow sorcerer, their personality is affected by their power’s origins and they are very socially awkward; they hate this and desire to be rid of their power.
In my high school dnd group, there was the one guy who only ever played Mercy from Overwatch. Didn't matter the campaign or adventure, he was always the same Aasimar Cleric who talked, acted, and looked exactly like Mercy.
this reminds me of the time my friends and I decided to come up with a very specific party for our RM to mess with. the short-story was set in a land with clear ancient-chinese influence, so we put together a fun party and decided to see how long it took for the DM to catch on. first member was a tabaxi second member was a yuan-ti third was an aarakocra fourth was a homebrew race known as "munkai", a monkey-like race the fifth was a thri-kreen, a mantis-like race and the last was a pandafolk. all of us were monks. yes, our party was literally just kung-fu panda. our DM didn't catch on until the pandafolk one-shot a goblin and said "skadoosh". After that, we came across "a palace made out of beautifully carved jade, resting at the top of a long stairway." After climbing the stairs, we met a tortle named Oogway who sensed the pandafolk was destined to be the greatest warrior in the land.
this video made me think: what if some one made a dnd campaign where the players have to play as game/show/comic characters, maybe it could be like a crossover fic kinda thing, or it could be like "the Mario brothers, sonic, and tails end up In a dnd world. and then later they find out they aint really the real ones but just clones"
The real question is what class is Mario? Could be monk because he has no weapons, jumps on things to kill them and has to find his mushrooms to change size and breathe fire. Order of the porcelain bowl anyone?
Jango1989 if you look at the spell list some of the druids spell mimic Mario’s abilities. The cantrip Produce flame makes a handheld fireball you can throw at enemies, they can also cast Jump. You can take spells like Goodberry and have them affect mushrooms instead of berries. Man! And you can use wildshape to mimic Mario’s power-ups, “I turn into a (cat, giant bee, giant frog, dire raccoon, etc.)” I would definitely have him wield a wooden hammer.
There’s an entire category of memes where people transfer their favourite characters to DND There’s also Fusion, which combines traits from 2 or more characters
One time I was randomly rolling up a character and I ended up making a chaotic evil darth vader. It was interesting. Especially when he accidentally became a lawful good person after his software failed.

@@justas423 well I have about 8 characters ready to go. My group already has 3 campaigns running, I already have a character for the next campaign we plan, so by the time my tortle spore druid gets his turn at being played, its probably gonna be 4 years since I came up with him.
Just remember, creativity is your mind stitching together what it already knows. Every thought starts somewhere, you just need to make sure that you're not taking too much from any one source.
One of my favorite beginning PCs was actually a semi-clone of Zane from Ninjago 😂 I liked it because it was a unique challenge that taught me how to build a character around certain constraints, really figuring out how I understood him as a character. The best part of the whole thing is that the DM was the only person who knew that's what I had gone for, so it was like I was getting to tell some of Zane's story in another universe, in my own way.
@@BahamutEx there is a character called Dritz Urden. Not sure on the last name but I think that is correct. He was a lawful good drow, who escaped the drow society and defied destiny by becoming one of the few good drow. I only learned about him by the mentions of him in the player handbook for D&D 5e, but I can asume someone wrote a book series about him, just like with the dragon lance chronicles, an old series that is now one of the settings described in the handbook.

Also, completely separate, even before the books my favorite race was Drow because of the cool culture, my favorite weapon is Scimitar(not in game stats), and my favorite class before 4e/5e was ranger. It pissed me off to no end when I found out that Drizzt already existed, with all my favorite things, in a shitty non-developed character.

In one of my dnd sessions we got really bored and it ended up with a bunch of cereal mascots beating up people. They were all pirates and the captain was captain crunch. He snapped people’s necks at will. That was a really interesting session.

one of my favorite npcs was a joke based off of the Drizzit clone tropes. he was a drow that abandoned his society, but not because they were evil, but because "they dont appreciate my music, man". he was a bass guitar playing bard and acted like a typical hippie/stoner.
In the campaign I'm currently playing, it would feel weird not to steal a character. This is the setting: We are sent to protect farmer Thanos. When we arrive, a dementor gets out from a PC and attacks Thanos. He asks us to get his gauntlet, but as we do 7 dragonballs come out, I touch one as Thanos snap his gauntlet and with his last words he tell us to protect Sarah Connor. PS: My character is Aang and another PC made detective pikachu.
Yeah, I usually start with a character for inspiration and improvise new facets during sessions. I have a gnome cleric that started with heavy inspiration from Ralsei...but is now a sociopathic hermit with an affinity for pickles. It's a long story, trust me.
I will admit, I've been playing table top roleplaying games since I was 6, but a few months ago I got involved in my first dnd campaign. And with this, I made my first dnd character, which was a clone of the Jester from darkest dungeon, I studied the lines, his lore, and his fighting style, and remade that in dnd. Luckily, my DM helped with this and now he's a full fledged character with intricate story and will change how he plays and looks over time. He specifically is a college of swords Bard Jester that has a magic item called the dark tambourine, that after using all my bardic inspirations, I can tap the tambourine and get it back, and after 4 taps I can use finale, which is an attack that I add basically every bardic inspiration I've used onto that attack, but whether it hits or not, I take 4 levels of exhaustion after.
One of my friends who is in my party and every character he made had to be referencing something like ‘Tarny Splincen’ who is a bard who is obsessed with flirting and occasionally talks about opening a bar named ‘Puzzles’
This was actually enjoyable and reminds me why i love my players, they fall in love with a concept not the looks so since not all concepts can be multiclassed into dnd, they instead have me homebrew a archetype or whole new class based on their desired concept. For example i made a fighter archetype based solely around the Shield Hero from Rising of the Shield Hero.
@@BlaineSimple haha nice, yea one play really liks adaptation so ive done a Megaman ZX class, Shield Hero, FF Dragoon, Legend of Dragoon Dragoon, and by his request now looking at League of Legends characters and figuring how would I convert them into something playable but not too copy pastey feeling. Had a Devil May Cry thing in the works but hit a writers block.
Blaine Simple practice makes perfect! My female voice is a very shy and quiet sounding voice. Trying to make it sound like an Orc makes it sound awkward. Why do I know this? I NPC'ed for a LARP and played 2 female NPC's. Lemme just say, this made me appreciate long hair so much more when I realized how often the hair got into your face and mouth, and that you have to tuck it behind the ear, put it in a ponytail, or get a mouthful of hair. LARP is fun.
Aren't all characters people think off related to something or based on something you have picked up on before? I think it's very unlikely people make a 100% original character these days. Any main characteristic must be based on something you have heard before.
well that's kind of a problem you see we're in a campaign where you travel through dimensions and one of the pc's plays as a high ranking member of the fallout enclave and got power armor due to his rank the thing is the way they get these random quests in random dimensions is up to a random chart and they got an encounter where they became friends with liberty prime
I once made a literal paranoid hobo with amnesia, whose best friend was a cursed-by-with-ghost bagua compass board and a little sack with a random amount of random-sided dices (you could roll four dices and come up with a three because three of them showed 0's). He was not even an adventurer, he just followed the board. And the board brought him to the adventurers. The DM was a friend of mine and needed someone as started a new group and they were all... stiff as a board at role-playing. The dwarf didn't drink, the thief didn't steal and the chaotic-neutral character didn't even burn orphanages to pump up his Mojo (yes, he was 'inspired' from Richard (Looking for group).
As a skinner i almost never know what the character i stole my look from is. I just liked the art and used it for mine. No i didn’t know the personality of this random Zelda npc i used for my half elf. STOP TRYING TO BUY POTS FROM ME!
i have a dm that runs campaigns that are specifically like "okay we're all into this one show and none of the characters are any thing remotely in dnd. choose a character and dnd-ify them." and ive got to say the characters ive made for the two campaigns ive been in so far are the Best ive been in. really fun and creative stuff can come out of taking a character and crafting a dnd version for them
I made an android sephiroth as a major henchmen of my main villan. But when the players finally defeated him (after four attempts) the players declared the campaign over. I went with it.
“People can’t just sit down and instantly create a Picasso or Mona Lisa” 0:34 Umm... I make characters based on a single bit like “I want a rogue” or “I want a home brew race” then I make the character extremely fleshed out to the point that I want to play as them but I can’t, so I put them in my “PC Vault” until I can brush them off later... Ok this really sounds like I’m bragging which I kind of am but I don’t mean to say that I’m better than anyone, just the first thing that came to mind when they said the thing
Sometimes I encounter a character in media where the concept is just so cool and the idea of how to recreate their interesting traits within the existing system is so intriguing that I just can't resist making one of the 'copy cat' category characters. The one that first comes to mind is the character I made after watching Moana and becoming fascinated by the style of Maui. So I just HAD to make myself a druid/barbarian shapeshifter. Everyone loved the character because it wasn't copy/paste "This is Maui from Moana" but the inspiration was clear on a character that actually fit the game's world- a ritual-tattoo adorned, buff, wild and bravado filled woman (Because I don't enjoy roleplaying guys) who had a few levels in both druid and barbarian that used a bone carved sickle in combat. And let me tell you... If this sounds tempting, do it. It's a blast. "Hmm should I just change into a bear and crush that bad guy? Or use Thornwhip (dm approved for sake of flavor that the sickle was thrown on the whip before pulling them in just because it was BA in the roleplay) to pull them over and obliterate them under my own massive physique?" More often the second one, because... Tribal Roadhog is a way cooler move than just using your 'bear arms'. (hehehe)
I had a player who showed up with a tortle monk named oogway, I ignored it and started the session. They all met up at. A tavern where they were sent to find a portal. That player was literally trying to be oogway the entire time and it was really frustrating. Anyway my other players consisted of a wizard shark who communicated with ASL and wore nothing but leggings, a tutu, and a wizard hat. My other player was a goblin rouge who happened to be a pyromaniacs and kleptomaniac. (He actually managed to steal ALL of the other players gold at one point.)
A Player of my campaign wanted to seriously create Saitama. You know the guy that kills everyone/everything in one punch...? THE ONE punchman.....yeah..sigh. in the end he played a perfect stat monk and i hated my dice for those rolls *sighing intensifies*

Also, along the “Mario would be funny lines” there are things you can do, like if it’s kind of outrageous it can make it fun. Like my brother designed Johnny bravo as a bard and just reading the character sheet makes me laugh.
once upon a time, me and my friends did a meme campaign (through discord and cameras). My character was the DOOM Slayer. There was also a murderhobo bard that kills people with a death metal guitar which is literally just an axe, a skeleton sorcerer that can create bones and shoot lasers, and a warlock who's patron was a kraken that wore sunglasses. It was an awesome campaign ngl
I had a eureka moment when I was making a character. So I decided to make a doctor who specialized in martial arts, but he was fairly pacifistic and liked healing the party more. Then as I was designing it I realized I copied Jude Mathis form Tales of Xillia.
I've been playing DnD for about 4-5 years and I have only seen something like this happen once. It was my friend's little brother's first character, he was a gnome barbarian with a dark beard, loved eating popcorn, and had a short temper as well as a poor sense of humor. So yes, it was a satirical take on Keemstar. It was actually pretty funny and I think still his favorite character to date.
I've never played D&D before but if I did and I created my own character (Homebrew) I'd probably be a type of Skinner. So to explain I love video games and some ocs I create are sometimes based on game concepts. And sometimes I create a character that looks exactly like the og character from a game. When I discovered Smash Bros I honestly ended up falling in love with the adorable Ice Climbers!! I loved them so much that I ended up learning everything cannon about them. But sadly I learned that they don't have much going for them character wise and world building wise. So I ended up creating all that for them. I created their personalities, their world, their world physics, their life styles, friends, families, where they live, how they live, I created more characters as to build them into a species, I used cannon enemies from their og game and created some of my own to build an eco system for their world, AND I even changed some of their anatomy to make them somewhat different (basically all I did for this was add a thin black tail with a fluff at the end and if it's grabbed it paralyzes the person ((don't judge me I like dragon Ball and Blue Exorcist))) (I even changed other anatomy things but to sum it up they have a specialized organ that's design to help them survive the harsh environment they live in and hunters will come to hunt the children of the species to get this organ easily and for it's better taste because it's a delicacy for other "rich" species) And after all that those edits to the "Ice Climbers" that I created, it was just no longer Nintendo's Nana and Popo. They kinda because its own thing... So if I ever did play D&D I'd probably use them (• ε •)
When i first started playing DnD I started with creation of "okay", clitche and pop-culture referance'y characters. But with time i've learned that with combining all those races and classes and feats of this gigantous world, you can make characters extending beyond the limits of a human's Imagination. And, well, also just straight out hellspawns like my Loxodon Bard of College of Satire (UA) speaking only with big and intelligent words and tripping over his enormous trunk which he uses to play 3 instruments at the same time.
Not D&D, but a roleplay with online friends over Discord. We mostly used original characters, with a few exceptions if they fit the setting. So, one time this person joined the server that was a friend of one of the more unpopular people in the group. They wanted to be Black Widow. I said no as the owner of the group. Then they said Loki, still said no. So, I checked back after about half an hour and they literally made... female Thor. Named Luna. Like, exactly the same personality, powers, everything. I told them “hey, that reminds me of Thor, can you change the character a bit?”. They blew up in my face, claiming they were original just because they have a new design and name. I kicked them because they just wouldn’t shut up.
I talked about this in the comments of the 9 year old DM vid, buuuut, I’m gonna bring this up again. I have a type 3 in a group I’m DMing. To try and quickly sum it up, I home brewed the heck out of this to add BNHA into D&D. It’s a lot of fun. When creating characters my players either pitch a quirk (superpower) to me, or I have roll tables so they can make a random one for more chaos- I mean fun. I haven’t really had anyone roll yet, but that doesn’t matter much here, I’m just salty. Anyways, I had a new player to the group a few sessions ago. When I asked him what his quirk was he said “I’m Sans.” I was like “so, you’re a skeleton? That’s really cool! Can you do anything like control bones?” But he was like “I’m Sans. I’m literally just Sans.” Here’s the thing. I told people when making quirks that they can’t be literally just like someone. Quirks alone couldn’t be just like someone’s (especially from the show. People from BNHA exist in this universe) and I’m not the biggest fan of copycats. I love character creation, so I’m willing to help with stuff like “I like this aspect of this character, so let’s build off of that.” I’ve tried to convince him- no- tell him that he’s not aloud to do that because of one of the few rules I set about quirks, but he’s stubborn. Lucky for me I guess that he hasn’t even played yet. He didn’t show up for a session or two, then he left before he could join in, and other times he’s had headphones in and ignored me the whole time. I’ll legit be surprised if he ever plays

For example, I once made an Oracle in the Pathfinder rule-set, and chose "Wind" as my Mystery power, because I liked the perks, which included the ability to throw lighting bolts and fly.
As the campaign progressed, my favorite spell to use in combat was Spiritual Weapon, which produced a magical flying hammer.
By about 6th level, one of the other players suddenly piped up, "OMG! You character is Thor!". And I had to stop for a moment and think about it, then realized ... crap, I *DID* make Thor...

My first character that I made was a very wholesome dyslexic wizard with a spellbook purely made of pictures and diagrams that he drew himself. When he saw a giant dust cloud looking out the window of an Inn, his first thought was "Gee, I hope everyone with asthma is okay"
One of my favorite DND campaigns was one where the DM specifically wanted us to clone our characters. We had a table consisting of the terminator, samus, sailor moon. And Reno jackson. And it was an absolute blast. And a totally diffrent way of playing dnd. Instead of adopting a persona. Or playing as "your mc" sometimes it's fun to drop in a pre-established character and think amongst your table on "how would the terminator communicate with sailer moon" and more often then not the end result is an absolute riot. Is this the best way to play? No probably not. And alot of the DND snobs with scoff at the idea of "restraining the limitless creativity of the game" by blatantly making a party of plagiarized characrers. But at the end of the day my friend group plays dnd to have fun. So that's what we'll do. And i reccomend trying this out at your friend table sometime as well.
Doing this with the express idea of 'This is gonna be an absolute shitshow and we are all gonna laugh until we cry' sounds amazing. Totally want to do this.

What if an entire game was based around cloners and you made it an isekai. You could have a hilarious game with Krieg from Borderlands as a tank berserker while steven universe had to fight alongside him as a paladin. Add some serious characters along with them, and you might have a funny yet practical party.

I had two different versions of Krieg, one became what I call the horseman of pestilence thanks to Brovia campaign, the other ended being a human who was more dragon that any dragon born could ever be.
I am the DM of my group. I have a player who really loves Persona and wanted to play Joker, the protagonist from p5. I allowed it and created a story reason for him to be there, not as someone else like him, or an alternate version of him, but instead the original having been dragged through a portal and trying to get home. It's more complex than that, obviously, but that aspect of the story and world building made the game more fun for everyone. I got to add other characters in similar situations and watch as he roleplayed having no idea how the heck to get out of this realm or what was popular there. It helped that the character had different ways to play it in the original game that he came from. Cloners aren't always so bad, and it was clear that everyone was having fun with it. In the end, that's what matters.

I'm the type of person that would go very thematic into a character based off other things. Like my Illusion School Wizard "Rhodney Charles Crezki" started off as a "What if a illusionist/trickster/magician from our world had real powers? And he was basically a showman that I focused charisma on. His intelligence was from him studying new "tricks" to preform. He had sleight of hand + Deception & game card proficiency with Arcana and history as well. He could technically been a rogue (arcane trickster) but he's not like a rogue.
His book was like a "Book of tricks", him having to "Prepare his tricks" like a showman have to prepare the stage, instead of just able to cast them willynilly like a sorcerer/warlock. His familiar was even a dove, that he used with magic tricks (By teleporting it around so it would appear in different places) and he mostly preformed for peasant people. This was a place with lowish magic fantasy. Basically, it was a setting where magic was practically only for nobles rather than the common folk. So few people have ever seen magic for real.
That's an epic concept. I actually thought of that idea a few times like: "What if I just made a wizard who became well known by being a birthday party magician"

I had a cloner in a deadlands game, he tried to mimic Alexander Anderson from Hellsing, oh but not just regular Hellsing, from Hellsing Abriged and let me tell you any immersion I built up he destroyed without a thought, (that and there were crucial character details he failed to mention to me that resulted in a very messy encounter that killed pretty much the whole thing going forward). Its real hard to create a Spaghetti Western atmosphere when you have a preacher going around calling everyone a protestant fuck-bucket.
I Have Terrible Rolls I feel as if, with a little work, a psychotic preacher with a bayonet fetish spouting lines from Boondock Saints while gutting monsters would fit well into a spaghetti western so long as it wasn't the gritty type.

@@immortalstar0138 That is fair. And as this build was around a year old, I have tweaked it to fit most other Lightning spells, Thunderwave was mainly a first level option. Main reason Thunderwave was the go to in the first place was do to the fact that it worked the most similar to how Kaminari primary ability worked. (A sphere with an origin on the player.) That being said though, I've tweaked the build a lot and it actually works quite well now.

Seeing this reminds me of a video game RPG idea I had once.
The plot would be a DM has been planning a special session of D&D (or some D&D parody for legal reasons) for a few weeks after a session with his friends. Because he was running some custom homebrew monsters and races, he allows his friends to make their own homebrew races and characters as long as they promised not to be too broken and ruin the fun.
The players promised not to be OP and talked about it afterwards and were talking about character ideas until one of them had a hilarious concept he shared amongst them and they agreed to it.
The day of the session he was greeted by a team of characters with clear inspiration to certain sci-fi heroes and are a team of space travelers who are checking out what was supposed to be a post apocalyptic Earth now brimming with life and crash landed onto it because they were shot down by people who mistook the vessel for a dragon or large armored bird.
The DM goes along with it because he secretly planned to make the big bad of the campaign a clear homage to Darth Vader and Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine with an army of stormtrooper look-a-likes, and he actually had the friend who suggested it in on his plan, and told him to suggest the idea to the other players into making sci fi characters.
In gameplay, the characters wouldn't be overpowered and would all have the same class roles as most RPGs like the fighter, the mage, the healer, the tank, the ranger, the rouge, and so one. Maybe one or two, maybe three depending on the player count you wanna go with, of the players actually made traditional D&D type fantasy characters and ard trying to take this seriously because the gods know the space idiots probably aren't.
I could imagine the space players playing as sci-fi characters with clear inspiration, like a space marine, a hyper advanced android created to be close to human as possible with an arm cannon and large selection of weapons, a spartan super soldier, a galactic bounty hunter, and so on. Maybe they're a band of misfits like the Guardians of the Galaxy brought together from their adventures and misadventures or something.

This makes me feel good about the fact that all of my characters thus far are inspired by *concepts* but none directly copy the appearance or personality of one character.
Yuan-ti Pureblood Warlock: his patron used his body as a vessel, this warped his brain to be evil even though he was originally compassionate unlike the standard yuan-ti.
Warforged Artificer: they believe they are human, and look it too. He’s intelligent and charming; sometimes talks out loud without meaning to but is a really nice guy.
Elf Warlock: they have two personalities; one is the sweetest and kindest guy possible, the other is pure evil and the one who formed the bond with their patron.
Tabaxi Sorcerer: As a shadow sorcerer, their personality is affected by their power’s origins and they are very socially awkward; they hate this and desire to be rid of their power.

In my high school dnd group, there was the one guy who only ever played Mercy from Overwatch. Didn't matter the campaign or adventure, he was always the same Aasimar Cleric who talked, acted, and looked exactly like Mercy.
this reminds me of the time my friends and I decided to come up with a very specific party for our RM to mess with. the short-story was set in a land with clear ancient-chinese influence, so we put together a fun party and decided to see how long it took for the DM to catch on.
first member was a tabaxi
second member was a yuan-ti
third was an aarakocra
fourth was a homebrew race known as "munkai", a monkey-like race
the fifth was a thri-kreen, a mantis-like race
and the last was a pandafolk.
all of us were monks. yes, our party was literally just kung-fu panda.
our DM didn't catch on until the pandafolk one-shot a goblin and said "skadoosh". After that, we came across "a palace made out of beautifully carved jade, resting at the top of a long stairway." After climbing the stairs, we met a tortle named Oogway who sensed the pandafolk was destined to be the greatest warrior in the land.

this video made me think: what if some one made a dnd campaign where the players have to play as game/show/comic characters, maybe it could be like a crossover fic kinda thing, or it could be like "the Mario brothers, sonic, and tails end up In a dnd world. and then later they find out they aint really the real ones but just clones"

Jango1989 if you look at the spell list some of the druids spell mimic Mario’s abilities. The cantrip Produce flame makes a handheld fireball you can throw at enemies, they can also cast Jump. You can take spells like Goodberry and have them affect mushrooms instead of berries. Man! And you can use wildshape to mimic Mario’s power-ups, “I turn into a (cat, giant bee, giant frog, dire raccoon, etc.)” I would definitely have him wield a wooden hammer.

@@justas423 well I have about 8 characters ready to go. My group already has 3 campaigns running, I already have a character for the next campaign we plan, so by the time my tortle spore druid gets his turn at being played, its probably gonna be 4 years since I came up with him.
Just remember, creativity is your mind stitching together what it already knows. Every thought starts somewhere, you just need to make sure that you're not taking too much from any one source.

One of my favorite beginning PCs was actually a semi-clone of Zane from Ninjago 😂 I liked it because it was a unique challenge that taught me how to build a character around certain constraints, really figuring out how I understood him as a character. The best part of the whole thing is that the DM was the only person who knew that's what I had gone for, so it was like I was getting to tell some of Zane's story in another universe, in my own way.

@@BahamutEx there is a character called Dritz Urden. Not sure on the last name but I think that is correct. He was a lawful good drow, who escaped the drow society and defied destiny by becoming one of the few good drow. I only learned about him by the mentions of him in the player handbook for D&D 5e, but I can asume someone wrote a book series about him, just like with the dragon lance chronicles, an old series that is now one of the settings described in the handbook.

Also, completely separate, even before the books my favorite race was Drow because of the cool culture, my favorite weapon is Scimitar(not in game stats), and my favorite class before 4e/5e was ranger.

one of my favorite npcs was a joke based off of the Drizzit clone tropes. he was a drow that abandoned his society, but not because they were evil, but because "they dont appreciate my music, man". he was a bass guitar playing bard and acted like a typical hippie/stoner.

This is the setting: We are sent to protect farmer Thanos. When we arrive, a dementor gets out from a PC and attacks Thanos. He asks us to get his gauntlet, but as we do 7 dragonballs come out, I touch one as Thanos snap his gauntlet and with his last words he tell us to protect Sarah Connor.
PS: My character is Aang and another PC made detective pikachu.

Yeah, I usually start with a character for inspiration and improvise new facets during sessions. I have a gnome cleric that started with heavy inspiration from Ralsei...but is now a sociopathic hermit with an affinity for pickles.
It's a long story, trust me.
I will admit, I've been playing table top roleplaying games since I was 6, but a few months ago I got involved in my first dnd campaign. And with this, I made my first dnd character, which was a clone of the Jester from darkest dungeon, I studied the lines, his lore, and his fighting style, and remade that in dnd. Luckily, my DM helped with this and now he's a full fledged character with intricate story and will change how he plays and looks over time. He specifically is a college of swords Bard Jester that has a magic item called the dark tambourine, that after using all my bardic inspirations, I can tap the tambourine and get it back, and after 4 taps I can use finale, which is an attack that I add basically every bardic inspiration I've used onto that attack, but whether it hits or not, I take 4 levels of exhaustion after.
One of my friends who is in my party and every character he made had to be referencing something like ‘Tarny Splincen’ who is a bard who is obsessed with flirting and occasionally talks about opening a bar named ‘Puzzles’

This was actually enjoyable and reminds me why i love my players, they fall in love with a concept not the looks so since not all concepts can be multiclassed into dnd, they instead have me homebrew a archetype or whole new class based on their desired concept. For example i made a fighter archetype based solely around the Shield Hero from Rising of the Shield Hero.

Blaine Simple practice makes perfect! My female voice is a very shy and quiet sounding voice. Trying to make it sound like an Orc makes it sound awkward. Why do I know this? I NPC'ed for a LARP and played 2 female NPC's. Lemme just say, this made me appreciate long hair so much more when I realized how often the hair got into your face and mouth, and that you have to tuck it behind the ear, put it in a ponytail, or get a mouthful of hair. LARP is fun.

Aren't all characters people think off related to something or based on something you have picked up on before? I think it's very unlikely people make a 100% original character these days. Any main characteristic must be based on something you have heard before.

I once made a literal paranoid hobo with amnesia, whose best friend was a cursed-by-with-ghost bagua compass board and a little sack with a random amount of random-sided dices (you could roll four dices and come up with a three because three of them showed 0's).
He was not even an adventurer, he just followed the board. And the board brought him to the adventurers.
The DM was a friend of mine and needed someone as started a new group and they were all... stiff as a board at role-playing. The dwarf didn't drink, the thief didn't steal and the chaotic-neutral character didn't even burn orphanages to pump up his Mojo (yes, he was 'inspired' from Richard (Looking for group).
As a skinner i almost never know what the character i stole my look from is. I just liked the art and used it for mine. No i didn’t know the personality of this random Zelda npc i used for my half elf. STOP TRYING TO BUY POTS FROM ME!

Umm... I make characters based on a single bit like “I want a rogue” or “I want a home brew race” then I make the character extremely fleshed out to the point that I want to play as them but I can’t, so I put them in my “PC Vault” until I can brush them off later...

Sometimes I encounter a character in media where the concept is just so cool and the idea of how to recreate their interesting traits within the existing system is so intriguing that I just can't resist making one of the 'copy cat' category characters. The one that first comes to mind is the character I made after watching Moana and becoming fascinated by the style of Maui. So I just HAD to make myself a druid/barbarian shapeshifter. Everyone loved the character because it wasn't copy/paste "This is Maui from Moana" but the inspiration was clear on a character that actually fit the game's world- a ritual-tattoo adorned, buff, wild and bravado filled woman (Because I don't enjoy roleplaying guys) who had a few levels in both druid and barbarian that used a bone carved sickle in combat. And let me tell you... If this sounds tempting, do it. It's a blast. "Hmm should I just change into a bear and crush that bad guy? Or use Thornwhip (dm approved for sake of flavor that the sickle was thrown on the whip before pulling them in just because it was BA in the roleplay) to pull them over and obliterate them under my own massive physique?" More often the second one, because... Tribal Roadhog is a way cooler move than just using your 'bear arms'. (hehehe)
I had a player who showed up with a tortle monk named oogway, I ignored it and started the session. They all met up at. A tavern where they were sent to find a portal. That player was literally trying to be oogway the entire time and it was really frustrating.
Anyway my other players consisted of a wizard shark who communicated with ASL and wore nothing but leggings, a tutu, and a wizard hat.
My other player was a goblin rouge who happened to be a pyromaniacs and kleptomaniac. (He actually managed to steal ALL of the other players gold at one point.)
A Player of my campaign wanted to seriously create Saitama. You know the guy that kills everyone/everything in one punch...? THE ONE punchman.....yeah..sigh. in the end he played a perfect stat monk and i hated my dice for those rolls *sighing intensifies*
I'm still waiting for the right campaign to make my own version of Saitama.

Also, along the “Mario would be funny lines” there are things you can do, like if it’s kind of outrageous it can make it fun. Like my brother designed Johnny bravo as a bard and just reading the character sheet makes me laugh.
once upon a time, me and my friends did a meme campaign (through discord and cameras). My character was the DOOM Slayer. There was also a murderhobo bard that kills people with a death metal guitar which is literally just an axe, a skeleton sorcerer that can create bones and shoot lasers, and a warlock who's patron was a kraken that wore sunglasses. It was an awesome campaign ngl

I had a eureka moment when I was making a character. So I decided to make a doctor who specialized in martial arts, but he was fairly pacifistic and liked healing the party more. Then as I was designing it I realized I copied Jude Mathis form Tales of Xillia.

I've been playing DnD for about 4-5 years and I have only seen something like this happen once. It was my friend's little brother's first character, he was a gnome barbarian with a dark beard, loved eating popcorn, and had a short temper as well as a poor sense of humor. So yes, it was a satirical take on Keemstar. It was actually pretty funny and I think still his favorite character to date.
I've never played D&D before but if I did and I created my own character (Homebrew) I'd probably be a type of Skinner. So to explain I love video games and some ocs I create are sometimes based on game concepts. And sometimes I create a character that looks exactly like the og character from a game. When I discovered Smash Bros I honestly ended up falling in love with the adorable Ice Climbers!! I loved them so much that I ended up learning everything cannon about them. But sadly I learned that they don't have much going for them character wise and world building wise. So I ended up creating all that for them. I created their personalities, their world, their world physics, their life styles, friends, families, where they live, how they live, I created more characters as to build them into a species, I used cannon enemies from their og game and created some of my own to build an eco system for their world, AND I even changed some of their anatomy to make them somewhat different (basically all I did for this was add a thin black tail with a fluff at the end and if it's grabbed it paralyzes the person ((don't judge me I like dragon Ball and Blue Exorcist))) (I even changed other anatomy things but to sum it up they have a specialized organ that's design to help them survive the harsh environment they live in and hunters will come to hunt the children of the species to get this organ easily and for it's better taste because it's a delicacy for other "rich" species)
And after all that those edits to the "Ice Climbers" that I created, it was just no longer Nintendo's Nana and Popo. They kinda because its own thing... So if I ever did play D&D I'd probably use them (• ε •)
When i first started playing DnD I started with creation of "okay", clitche and pop-culture referance'y characters.
But with time i've learned that with combining all those races and classes and feats of this gigantous world, you can make characters extending beyond the limits of a human's Imagination.
And, well, also just straight out hellspawns like my Loxodon Bard of College of Satire (UA) speaking only with big and intelligent words and tripping over his enormous trunk which he uses to play 3 instruments at the same time.

Not D&D, but a roleplay with online friends over Discord. We mostly used original characters, with a few exceptions if they fit the setting. So, one time this person joined the server that was a friend of one of the more unpopular people in the group. They wanted to be Black Widow. I said no as the owner of the group. Then they said Loki, still said no. So, I checked back after about half an hour and they literally made... female Thor. Named Luna. Like, exactly the same personality, powers, everything. I told them “hey, that reminds me of Thor, can you change the character a bit?”. They blew up in my face, claiming they were original just because they have a new design and name. I kicked them because they just wouldn’t shut up.
I talked about this in the comments of the 9 year old DM vid, buuuut, I’m gonna bring this up again.
I have a type 3 in a group I’m DMing. To try and quickly sum it up, I home brewed the heck out of this to add BNHA into D&D. It’s a lot of fun. When creating characters my players either pitch a quirk (superpower) to me, or I have roll tables so they can make a random one for more chaos- I mean fun. I haven’t really had anyone roll yet, but that doesn’t matter much here, I’m just salty. Anyways, I had a new player to the group a few sessions ago. When I asked him what his quirk was he said “I’m Sans.” I was like “so, you’re a skeleton? That’s really cool! Can you do anything like control bones?” But he was like “I’m Sans. I’m literally just Sans.” Here’s the thing. I told people when making quirks that they can’t be literally just like someone. Quirks alone couldn’t be just like someone’s (especially from the show. People from BNHA exist in this universe) and I’m not the biggest fan of copycats. I love character creation, so I’m willing to help with stuff like “I like this aspect of this character, so let’s build off of that.”
I’ve tried to convince him- no- tell him that he’s not aloud to do that because of one of the few rules I set about quirks, but he’s stubborn. Lucky for me I guess that he hasn’t even played yet. He didn’t show up for a session or two, then he left before he could join in, and other times he’s had headphones in and ignored me the whole time. I’ll legit be surprised if he ever plays
