  • I Recently purchased this Awesome little 1968 Daihatsu Fellow which is powered by a 360cc Twin Cylinder Two Stroke.
    Upon Purchasing it we bolted it back together to find that exhaust gas was entering the cooling system.
    This sparked an ultimatum to either repair the factory ZM360 Two Stroke or potentially carry out an engine conversion with a motorbike engine.

      Restoring it gets my vote. Modified cars are cool but so are classics. If it had been modified in its day then I'd be all for restoring it as a modded car but seeing as it's schmiko bringing it back to its former glory seems like the right thing to do.

    Full crank case reed design opens up lots of opportunities for swapping out top ends. You could possibly adapt a couple of KTM300 barrels to that bottom end. That would give you modern 2-stroke head and port designs as well as exhaust power valves for a broader spread of power. Also keep the oil injection system. Early SAAB 2 strokes had some issues with seizing on prolonged downhill runs as there was no oil getting to the motor with the throttle shut.

    • @johngibson3837

    • @LS1Cobra
      @LS1Cobra 6 дней назад +3

      @@jcthe2nd Oil injection is likely directly to the crank case so the motor still gets some oil regardless of throttle. Most systems on 2 stroke motorcycles have a valve tied to the throttle that increases flow as the throttle opens but it still has a minimum flow when the throttle is closed.

      If the engine ever gets trashed, a classic 2-stroke 3 cylinder Suzuki GT750 water cooled engine would be sick. Better than a KTM thumper. Makes about 50hp but can make 175hp with carbs and exhaust.

    • @LS1Cobra
      @LS1Cobra 5 дней назад +1

      @@shize9ine KTM300 is a 2 stroke. That would make for a 600CC 2 stroke twin. GT750 wont even make 175HP with nitromethane. GT750 is also piston port, not real efficient by todays standards. I knew a bloke that converted one to reed valve and that made good improvements but cant be done without major modifications to the barrels.

    Be a bit careful about junking the factory oil injection set up , don’t know a thing about that cars set up but on some bikes the oil is injected directly to the main bearings ( and the inlet obviously)and premix won’t get to the bearings unless shields or seals are removed / modified .

    That was awesome! - as others have said autolube needs to stay on the little beast. They are reliable and the best bit is it moderates the oil ratio in most applications ie full throttle max 2T delivery. Unsolicited Tip 1: On long downhill runs a few blips of the throttle adds extra oil and fuel to prevent a hot seize as a result of a lack of cooling and lube effect of fuel and oil mix. So looking forward to seeing Jolly rock down the road.

    Woody, On what you can do with a tiny car; on my way to this episode I saw an Austin Mini hauling around Good wood Racecourse at full chat giving a strong looking Mustang V8 a real fit for laps. But is was a full up race car with all that entails, I'm sure, and I'm also sure it will never be a street car again, either. Interesting little car- many of the Japanese Kei cars are- the little sports models especially. Al's buddy, Benny's Custom Garage is into the Cappuccinos, so you might call over there. On your crank; if your buddy isn't available, any motorcycle shop should be able to handle the disassembly and reassembly with the new bearings- trapped ball bearings are pretty common on MC multi cylinder engines.

    With that rear suspension, an ST motor (the later ST1300 is same layout, but 1300cc and injected) would likely get you into "Be very careful with corners" territory. Honda also used the 1300 in the CTX1300 in a detuned/retuned for low end version. Also, looking at the design now that it's out, a snowmobile motor would be an easier swap than you thought. and adaper or new flange for the bellhousing could be fabbed up and a smaller (for modern snowmobiles) engine would slot in for less weight and a bit more power. But they'd be near double displacement (now-days seems 600cc is a "small" motor. I remember when a 440 was big. I show my age) but hay, as long as parts can be got, go stock, for now.

      Honda vfr1200 would fit the bill. V4 170hp shaft drive

    Am enjoying the Daihatsu work as much as any other previous Skid Factory project. These are classic cars and need to be restored as close to factory as possible. I’ve recently finished refreshing a 1995 G202 Charade with the 3 cylinder 993 cc motor that was unregistered for 4 years and it’s really satisfying to have brought it back to life and back on the road.

    Thanks for the video on pulling this engine down. I am a Daihatsu enthusiast also, I have a L60 Handi which has the 2 cylinder that replaced the ZM engine. The ZM is a cool engine too see, as I may have mentioned before there were some amazing variants of the ZM including one up to 44 hp.

    Variety is the spice of life and it's not all about the big turbo's and skids (just don't let Alan hear us say that though 😂)!

    Dont mess with the ports or make chambers unless you have a 2-stroke genius on call. Its might pick up alittle on top, but will probably be even worse than now down low. What about an old Honda goldwing engine? Should be bulletproof, shaft drive and more than enough torque. It you have the money, maybe a Honda CBX 1000 or a Kawasaki KZ1300 six cylinder !

    Engine swap sounds wrong but I love my ETEC outboard (also used in snowmobiles) and something like that might result in a surprisingly economical car. It is neck to neck with modern 4-strokes from likes of Honda and Yamaha with outboards, and those in turn are related to motorbike and car engines.

    This needs the little 3 cyl turbo engine from a Suzuki Swift turbo (Same as Chevy Sprint, Pontiac Firefly, etc) Probably the exact right amount of power to be fun, and not totally over power the chassis, rear end, etc.

    On the premix note, if it's anything like the suzuki lj50 two stroke, that actually feeds oil to the main bearings, so running premix will damage the bearings and crank, good luck with the rebuild
