I absolutely wish I could disagree with your thought but I’m afraid you are correct. I also guess that the reason there are no new cars at the dealerships is they are using the chips in electric cars leaving few for gasoline or diesel vehicles. John. USA
An anecdote. I'm a wildlife biologist, and my company drives brand-new leased 3/4 trucks all day long in the bush. They have had so many issues with GM trucks that my company said "no more GM rentals/leases" and is basically using all Fords (a few Rams) now.
You can lay it off on the government forcing manufacturers to get better mileage or be fined. And at the same time the government lets millions of illegals in that need cars (usually old polluters) that more than negate any gains in emmissions from squeezing the manufactures.
@@MatthewWieler I found from 2014 and up quality control problems. My best friend ran his own repair shop . He agreed with me on GM quality control. This only applies to half ton trucks not three quarter ton trucks

Then once u get to 100k u change the transmission fluid, & by 200k u get a new transmission or a new truck.
@@harveyhankerson8359 I’ve literally heard the exact same thing from many people with brand new Silverado’s. GM used to make absolutely SOLID trucks up until about 2009. Also transmission issues. Unfortunately with even a brand new Toyota or ford trucks, neither of them would probably last 20 years. It’s just gadgetry over dependability for new vehicles.
I found your channel about a year ago...Time well spent, and never disappointing - Good info, and I love the documentaries...Learning a lot! Thx, Sir. (now, I gotta find that good used Lexus ES series, and treat it right!)
I had a Honda Accord with a V6/deactivation system. Found out after I bought it, the prior owner had to have the deactivation side rebuilt under warranty. I got rid of it before the warranty expired.
I am an old geezer and can tell you why there is a GMC truck. I grew up in the 50's. Buick dealers complained to GM that they needed a p/u truck to sell so they could also have p/u trucks on their lot to draw in customers. WaLa! GM gave them the GMC truck. This is true. They couldn't put Chevy trucks on the Buick lot because that would cheapen the Buick brand so they fooled everyone with the GMC. Now Pontiac, Olds (people didn't call them Oldsmobiles, they were Olds) didn't have a truck but they didn't need one because most Chevy dealers were Chevy/Pontiac/Olds dealers. and Cadillace dealers were Buick/Cadillac dealers. i never saw a stand alone Pontiac or Olds dealer. ,except in very small towns and then they may have one but they were rare and if they were stand alone they usually had Chevy trucks on the lot.
Just bought a 2021 Toyota Tacoma SR with the 4cyl 4wd from Carmax. Love the truck so far. Great for the Tennessee winters. Went to buy a new Tacoma and the dealer wanted $5000.00 over MSRP. I just walked out and got a good deal on a used one with very low miles.
My friend just bought a 2022 Sierra Denali. He had it for 12 days and it wouldn't crank, they had to replace the push button start system. Today it wouldn't shift out of 4th gear. He can put it in park, start the truck, take off and it gets stuck in 4th gear everytime. If he stops it stalls because it won't downshift. It's not even a month old and only ~500 miles. GM = GARBAGE!
The more complicated it gets, the more there is to go wrong! This why you need a computer, a scope, a data subscription, and tools worth more than the vehicle, in order to FIX IT!
Ppl like you don’t stop to think why our highly regulated open markets are as flawed and corrupt as it is right now. Complexity can’t have any contradictions. We need simpler cars and better re established free markets. Go ahead keep believing that crap tho
My buddy got a brand new Chevy truck with a diesel and it developed an oil leak after about 10k miles. He took it to the dealership under warranty and they said the leak was coming from the oil filter which was loose. They asked where he had the oil changed last and he told them that they did it...lol
I work at a GM dealership for now as a lube guy & I can tell you that we get trucks in w electrical issues like nuts. We had a truck w 30k & it had transmission issues, some of the newer GM vortec motors were having issues w collapsing lifters even w proper oil changes, & these are vehicles that are ONLY dealer serviced since new abt 2-3yrs ago. But yeah, I’d try to avoid a 2019-2022 made vehicle just cuz of the parts shortage things. Mainly the years 2020-2022.

Speaking of lemon law. I bought a new 2017 CRV here in a MN suburb. I drove low miles especially in the winter. Before I knew anything about oil dilution, I limped home many times. The local Honda dealer either did not know or knew but hid the real reason. With the help of our Attorneys General, I was told to pound sand. Dealer told me to drive more, and Honda said to live with it. Not a big fan of lemon laws even though all my ducks were in a row.
Had to get a rental car lately and it was a Chevy Equinox. What a piece of junk. Engine stopped everytime I stopped, started again when I pushed on the gas pedal, but it would go back six inches to foot for a moment before it went forward. It also had a lane departure feature you could turn off. Had to turn it off as there was a truck and trailer on the right side of the right fog line, because when I turned to the left to give the truck/trailer more room, the steering wheel turned towards the parked truck/trailer. Not good and dangerous!
Good video as usual. There is another way to stop emissions and wasted gas from idling (instead of stopping the engine)-fix the highways. Where ever possible, replace lights and 4 way stops with roundabouts. These are safer(no T collisions or racing lights), less expensive to maintain than lights, people are forced to slow down, and no more waiting for nobody(wasting gas and producing emissions). I drove over 2000 miles in the UK with no issues with their roundabouts.(Now, the UK does have lights where needed). The good news is that the use of roundabouts is increasing in the US.
That why I kept my 1999 Chevy Silverado very simple to work on not real high on the technology and I've got 411,000 mi on it I've been driving it for 23 years now and I'm still driving it everyday the engine is wore out but it still gets me around that's why I don't buy none of that crap that they're selling now
Avoid pre 2021’s, they have cylinder deactivation and the oil pump is belt driven which has to be replaced at 150k miles and to do so, you have to drop the tranny
I know someone with a 2 year old Silverado. The check engine light, code said radiator was the problem. Turned out to be the heater. It took 2 trips to the dealership to find someone who could figure it out.
A Prius engine also turns off at a stop light, but there isn't an oil or engine wear problem with them. Sounds like companies are just implementing these features incorrectly. That isn't the fault of regulators - that's the fault of the manufacturer. If they can't get it right so that the car is reliable, they should not be manufacturing the product!
Hybrid Start/Stop cannot be compared with Gas Only Start/Stop. They are completely different systems. The electric motor in the Prius spins up the Gas Engine before turning the ignition on so it's already pre-lubricated with oil for a seamless transition from Electric to Hybrid operation.
238,000 miles on a 2006 Chrysler 300c Hemi here, no problems with engine, but trans ground up at 225,000 however, I change the 5w-20 oil, (all 7 quarts) every couple thousand miles...sucker runs hot, I think.
I ALWAYS have my AFM turned off immediate after purchase. With Chevy I had it tuned to turn it off and my Ram I have a OBD plug in. My mileage stays the same and I’m not blowing up engines. I had two chevys with afm blow up on me at 4500 each. I am part of the class action suit. So far I am very happy with my Ram
The guy who was choosing between buying the 03. Toyota Avalon and the 99 Acura CL if the Acura has an automatic transmission. I would not buy one of those That's the same transmission that they used in the Accord of the era. The Odyssey, the TL and they're famous for going bad If it's a 6 speed Not a problem but if it has the automatic I would stay away from it And this is coming from a die-hard Acura guy I would not buy one of those if it has an automatic
Yep. Meanwhile the Avalon has a bulletproof 4 speed auto. Also the engine in the Avalon is non interference (1MZ) vs the Acura which is interference (does Honda even make non interference engines)? Plus the Avalon is newer. If he can live with it being a little boring, I would get the Avalon hands down. I have an 06 myself
My cousins and uncle rotate their GM products considering half the time they’re basically totaled under warranty. My Tacoma has more bed space, has a topper with racks for even more space, and I have the 2.7 for hauling material and dumping. 6.5k miles strong and many more coming! Love from Fl Scotty
yeah a friend bought a sierra last year and he already regrets it, had the lifter issue almost right away, dealer did the lifter "fix" and now its failing again, less than 11,000 miles on it, GMs and Chevys used to be more dependable than the Fords, not anymore. Nephew sued Ford to take back his F150 under the lemon law also. Truck developed severe driveline vibrations, 4 months downtime in shop, nearly all drivetrain was replaced. he owned the truck 14 months and it spent 4 of it at the dealership, Took the money and bought a Tundra and he loves it

I've got 80 model vehicles where ac still works fine. Had a 2015 chevy silverado with the evaporator coil leaking. Only had 60,000 miles on it. And I've talked to couple buddies with same problem. I traded truck but they say it's common and it's like a 6 hour job to change it. Newer vehicles suck.
Sounds like Chevy/GM has a major "take it or leave it" problem with respect to customer satisfaction. That's a shame because I really like the styling of their latest trucks. They need to make reliability their top priority if they don't want to go the way of the dinosaur.
My 2000 Chevy Z76 runs great. It has a 180000 miles on it.. I do the services religiously and I fix anything that breaks when it breaks which is rare. My mechanic friend says that all trucks are junk since about 2012.
The deactivated cylinders don't have equal pressure all around the pistons. They are free floating and rubbing on one side the entire time they are deactivated. It's not lack of lubrication.
That's a shame, I had a 1996 Chevy Silverado and it was a great truck. I'm a Chevy guy that hasn't owned a Chevy newer than a 1998 Camaro Z28. My next one will be a six speed manual Corolla.
GM is junk 1990's Silverado endless fuel pumps, AC leaks, Dash gauges incorrect, Alternators .....AC Delco parts have always been junk....... Motorcraft for Ford has always had great quality so does Toyota. GM is just garbage
Ive got a 2011 GMC Sierra-goes back and forth between 8 cyl and 4 cyl. I have 255000 miles on it. I got regular oil changes but just changed the tranny oil. Still running...
Hey Scotty, I just rebuilt my cylinder head but while it was laying on the terrazzo floor my dog wasn't feeling well and vomited on the head. I cleaned it with paper towel the best I can and installed it. Do you think the residual vomit will do good or harm. What should I do? I already placed over 1000 Miles on it since then.
HA!!! I finally saved enough to buy a new truck. After a week of looking at what they have to offer, ... yeah, I'm headed south to look for a real truck that I can still work on. They're peddling garbage and people keep buying it so it's not going to change. Even if these "trucks" were mechanically sound, they still wouldn't be worth a fraction of what they're asking.
I've been thinking since the start of the automatic shut-off at stop lights that there should be an electric lube pump running when the engine is off at the stoplight.
@@erniecarrasco9107 considering the Chevy and Ford has had a slew of transmission problems I don't really understand your point. All these manufacturers have issues and people like you don't understand that it's a joke
My 2007 Silverado was very disappointing. I had to replace the transmission at 89,000 miles. As well as a lot of the emissions parts. Never again Chevy.
Scotty. I have Chevy 2018 4x4 Suburban 1500 . So far I have had no problems until My front fan stopped working. It comes on and then goes off. The back rear fan works. The mechanic I go to said its only two parts that it could. But Chevrolet will not release their software for diagnostic on which 400 dollar part to buy until 2023. So I have to go to the dealer and spend 1000 dollars. Do these computer diagnostics just say to buy these expensive parts whether it is broken or not? The front fan motor runs but will fade off. The rear fan works great. What do you think ??? Much appreciation.
The government (EPA) didn't require cylinder deactivation. They set the milage requirements, as dictated by Congress. The manufactures decided to come up with a crappy approach to meet the requirement.
Your description of partly hot / partly cool on the cylinder deactivation engines is also an excellent reason that the Wankel rotary engine is junk. Half of the thing is burning hot and half of it is cool.
GM needs to close down as they became one of the worse companies since they opened the Mexico, China & Korea plants. I remember when they had the New Jersey plant & it was bad also.
The pictures always make me laugh 😂🤣 Well I'm glad I still have my old 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup with a 3.9 V-6 engine. It definitely hauls the mail with plenty of power. It rides very good and holds the road real good as well. It has a little over 240,000 miles. Easy on gas, reliable and easy to fix. It needs a front cap and a few other things. I'm still glad to have my truck any day. With the way a lot of people drive these days I have seen vehicles in far worse condition.
@@zacharypeery4082 I still drive it. If you don't have a CDL Class A then you can not tell me about quality vehicles. So be glad to have a rust bucket if you even have that. I don't know how old you are but stupidity is all age ranges. Lmao LoL hahahahaha 🤣
Another reason to lease,if Ford keeps your vehicle for two weeks, either waiting for parts,or whatever, they have to pay for your rental as long as you keep paying your lease payments.
The absolute worse automotive features are : the engine start/stop and this cylinder deactivation crap. Both are designed to cause early wear and tear on the engine .

Being a mobile mechanic. I’m thinking the cars made in the last 4-5 years, are designed to fail SOONER, pushing people into the electric car market.
Might have a point there
I would not be surprised. Problem, reaction, solution is put into play in all aspects of our lives by the powers that shouldn’t be.
BINGO!!
Planned obsolescence….
The deactivation systems in these trucks work by saving fuel when your truck sits in the shop not using any fuel for months. When will they stop this?
How true
Lol 😂😂. Good one.
I didn't even think of it like that 🤣
You can lay it off on the government forcing manufacturers to get better mileage or be fined. And at the same time the government lets millions of illegals in that need cars (usually old polluters) that more than negate any gains in emmissions from squeezing the manufactures.
Are there any engines that don't have this deactivation system?
The cherry on top of this is that these new Chevy and GMC trucks cost 40K to 60K. As a consumer, don't buy one! These trucks are complete joke.
And gas steadily going up definitely not worth it the GMC Sierra Denali is close to 75 grand
Sold my Sierra in july 2021. Great ride comfortable on long trips, but a piece of junk. Always broken

@@MatthewWieler I found from 2014 and up quality control problems. My best friend ran his own repair shop . He agreed with me on GM quality control. This only applies to half ton trucks not three quarter ton trucks
Damn GM. The modernization they made is just saddening. My 02 silverado has 222k, and new ones are breaking 10k in. A shame
The only good thing for GM is that they dropped cylinder deactivation on their new trucks and blamed it on lack of computer chips.
Harvey Hankerson, I work at a GM dealership, & we get truck in w 30k on the clock w transmission issues when there shouldn’t be if they aren’t towing anything but their lunchbox, & kids to school & to work every day. Then once u get to 100k u change the transmission fluid, & by 200k u get a new transmission or a new truck.
cylinder deactivation is back with a vengeance and worse than ever
@@harveyhankerson8359 I’ve literally heard the exact same thing from many people with brand new Silverado’s. GM used to make absolutely SOLID trucks up until about 2009. Also transmission issues. I had a Honda Accord with a V6/deactivation system. Found out after I bought it, the prior owner had to have the deactivation side rebuilt under warranty. I got rid of it before the warranty expired.
My brother has a GMC pickup. Yup, it's had a major engine deactivation problem!
True where I live all the Pontiac dealers sold GMC trucks as well.
He should sue them. Also, he should have bought a Toyota.

My buddy got a brand new Chevy truck with a diesel and it developed an oil leak after about 10k miles. ME 2, I was thinking, NOOOOO, WHY Scotty WHHHHY!
There not fun to use if your driving a large tractor trailer rig.

If they can't get it right so that the car is reliable, they should not be manufacturing the product!
atkinson cycle engines are different
huh i never thought about it like that but yeah
Hybrid Start/Stop cannot be compared with Gas Only Start/Stop. They are completely different systems.
The electric motor in the Prius spins up the Gas Engine before turning the ignition on so it's already pre-lubricated with oil for a seamless transition from Electric to Hybrid operation.
