      I think all my grandfathers even my great grandfather sung this too it’s the battle cry of Louisiana. The first integrated Army of crooks, politicians, and all ethnicities to fight a battle and defend America when the entire Army was lost. 😂

    I sang this on a car ride with my kids, and my little girl kept asking me to sing it over and over. I was brought back to my own childhood. The greatest song ever written. PS- the war was already over.

    • @milo8425
      @milo8425 2 года назад +21

      Word of the war being "over" hadn't been disseminated. And had we lost this battle we likely would have lost rights to the entire territory of the Louisiana purchase because the British saw it as an illegitimate purchase from Napoleon. And they'd have had a very large and fortified military presence completely capable of enforcing that ruling, which they'd see as a totally separate issue from the treaty.
      This battle won just about everything west of the Mississippi. California, Texas, etc. would all be Canada now.

      Your dad sounds like a guy named Pete who attended the same church my folks and I did. His wife and daughter both had beautiful voices and did solos and duets along with being in the choir, but Pete said he'd never join the choir.

      He went on to say that, when his daughter misbehaved, he would make her sit on a chair and listen to him sing as punishment. She hated it.

At a Tournament one of the other coaches had this on his in-car stereo and as he started playing it all of we coaches started singing it. Our Players, Wives, and other persons present laughed their tails off as they watched 9-10 coaches sing this song. None of us missing a word or beat and all in harmony. T.V. westerns were ALL THE RAGE during this time period which helped propel this style of record all the way to the top. Teens also had a good sense of humor and liked this record in a tongue-in-cheek / novelty kind of way.....Seems teens then had an open ear for a lot of varieties of good songs. Today's music (if you can call it that) "locks" teens into styles/genres: country, hip-hop, rap, rock, etc. In the late 50s / early 60s, A.M. radio stations played it ALL....And we listened and appreciated all.

    I have fond memories of this in my fathers music collection. I use roll my eyes and think it was the corniest song ever, but it one of those catchy old time ballads that sticks in your head. I love singing to. When my children were young they sung this in part of a talent show and they loved it even though it was 50 yrs before their time. You can't help but feel a little patriotic when hearing it.

    You also have to remember we weren't so driven by accuracy then and what museum would have loaned him accurate clothes and gun?!?!?! He/show did best they could.

    "...we gave the British well." Had to remember that, "giving well", or, "giving someone well", is antiquated American slang. I last heard it on the 2014 war movie, "Fury", where Brad Pitt's character, a staff sergeant tank commander, tells his colleague in another tank to give the Germans, "...some well". It loosely translates to slapping someone around or beating them them up, usually as a punishment or deterrent. I had to look it up on Wikipedia. It's like the other forgotten slang of, Scooby Do, I dig it, George!, that cat (guy), far out!, et al.
