    Thank you so very much for making and keeping this video online. It was thorough and the information is sound. You've helped divert a possible crisis here at home. I ordered a bunch of transformer because they were roughly 24 dollars each but the one I replaced were 80 dollars so I saved quite a bit with the ones I ordered from China. Both sides of of transformer had the same size wires ,which as you presented a big problem. But I paid attention to your video and finally figured out which side was which. So thank you very much.

    at the beginning of you explaining the turns and resistance of the primary and secondary, I believe you explained this backwards as to the way it actually is. when you performed the resistance check, you stated the orientation correctly though. may want to have a listen and watch the video to double check.

    If the mains voltage is 120V then the resistance of the primary is halved I assume. E.g 500ohms instead of 1000ohms. And the spark dimished too. I hope I’m not mistaken here.

    Gday LS I would have thought the secondary winding would have the thicker cable because in stepdown trany the secondary current is higher than the primary winding. I guess since the primary has the higher voltage the insulation needs to be thinker.

    Since a plain isolation transformer that can have 120 V going in and 120 V coming out, is there really a primary and secondary? Or when you connect one up can you use either set of wires for the primary and the other for the secondary?

    I have a transformer from a UPS. It has two fat wires on one side, and three thinner wires on the other. I assumed (stupid I know) that the fat wires would be the primary, and plugged it into the mains as I wanted to check the secondary voltage (was assuming it would be 12-0-12, or even 6-0-6). It tripped the breaker.
    I then measured the resistance of all coils. The fat side has a resistance of 0.4 ohms (does that mean its gone??).
    If the thin side wires are A, B, and C; resistance between A&B = 26 ohms, A&C = 24 ohms, and B&C = 2.7 ohms - somewhere I was expecting much more resistance!! I'm measuring with the meter on 200 ohms setting, so pretty sure I'm not getting confused with K ohms.
    So I will wait until I learn more before I try to plug in the other side....any help is appreciated!!

    A transformer only works on alternating voltage (AC), so I would never do this measurement with batteries that provide a DC voltage.
    DC voltage can damage transformers! You must apply a low alternating (AC) voltage with a variac, on this way you can easily and reliably find the primary side of the the transformer and also the transformer ratio because that is also important.

  • @Michaelebills

    Identifying primary and secondary you showed is not true. Like others commented, step-up or step-down. Second, the size of the wire, color and how many grouped together means nothing. I have a transformer with two primaries that are 22 awg... 120 volts for each one. In parallel connection of two primary input voltage 120, in series connection of two primary inputs 240. One secondary with two 10 awg wires with an output of 13.5 v at 40 amps. All wires primary and secondary are black. So, please do not follow this rule of size, color and grouping! The best way is to just use the secondary of a known transformer (i.e. 12v AC) or a VARAC, connect to each two wires and read the voltages and go to the next two... with this method. You will be able to identify primary and secondary, plus all the taps without damaging the unknown transformer. As well as yourself.

    • @TortureBot
      @TortureBot 2 года назад

      Transformers are only connected to AC, and AC does not have polarity. There is no positive and negative. If you connected DC voltage to a transformer, you would just create an electromagnet.
      You have to have AC's changing voltage to get anything out of a transformer. AC causes an electromagnetic field to build-up and collapse constantly and very quickly. This is what produces your output on the secondary.

    Doesn't the word transformer mean to transform, to go up, like up high. So what is the deal with transformer as rule implying coming down from a higher voltage to a lower voltage. And once in a while of course to higher voltage.
    It is surely a very confusing deal that the world of science got it screwed. No one wants to say step up or step down transformer as that is too many words. Besides step down transformer is pretty absurd by the very usage of words. How can you transform by going down? And science was suppose to most exact clear thing we are suppose to have. Of course there is more absurdity besides this.

    The primary can be the secondary and the secondary can be the primary. It really doesn't matter , it depend what you want to do with it so your video is useless.
