creepy faces are probably my worst nightmare and the fact that it POPPED up BEHIND THE CURTAIN effectively spooked me. really cool short and love those quick, simple shots
Great model of good horror. No cheap loud noises to ensue jumpscares, just the eerie silence, which is something I believe movies don’t utilize nearly as much as they should
I agree. Jumpscares are a really cheep way to scare your audience, and the only thing they remember about it is where it happened. However, something quiet, and psychologically creepy makes turns suspense into much more than a sudden burst at the end. It keeps you there, instead. It makes you think about what happened instead of making you focus on the scare, itself. It causes much more impact.
I agree. You know, I wonder if the reason why people don't use silence more often in horror movies isn't because it's supposed to be show in the movie theaters : many people going to see horror movies are noisy and disrespectful and silence would make their noise even more noticable. It's kinda sad, but I'm glad short films exist so when can appreciate this kind of horror.
The thing I love most about it is that the first time the face appears, it looks just faint enough that it MIGHT be your mind playing tricks on you but it also might be real. Amazing job!
That's what I call horror. I was expecting a jump scare, but nope. Great pacing, great suspense, great plot, and not to mention that curtain scene was terrifying. Now don't get me wrong. Jump scares can be fun. Yeah add a jump scare in a horror film every so often. Play a prank on the audience. Why not? But modern horror films just over use jump scares thinking that's what makes a horror film scary. No. A jump scare only startles oneself for just half a second. In order to make a horror movie a horror movie, you need to keep the audience scared throughout. Keep the audience on the edge of their seat. Which is what this short film did. So great job to the creators of this great short film
I honestly don't know how I would react in a horror movie setting. Like I know a lot of us say we'd never do the stupid stuff like run UPSTAIRS instead of outside, or lock your damn self in a closet. But what would we really do? Sometimes I think I'd freeze. But apparently the monster also freezes? And takes a minute to stare at you? Like to intimidate you, they just stare at you. And in real life, people do that too. Stare at you with a smug or disdainful look. And in my experience that just irritates me? Like it makes me want to fight. So if I was in a horror movie setting, and a creepy ass face was smiling at me through the curtain, smiling cuz they know they can kill me and they're smug about it...it'll terrify me cuz wtf...but after a minute of the staring contest I might get irritated cuz wtf you looking at me for? So the second they decide to jump at me, I may or may not just grab their throat with both hands and start digging my nails in. I'm not SAYING I've done this, but like I might based on prior experience. Or I just die. Idk.
Well, that is actually how some predators react when spotted sneaking up on their prey in nature. A brief moment of surprise when they’ll stare back, perhaps in the hope that their cover isn’t actually blown and maybe if they stand still the prey will go back to thinking nothing happened, followed by a dash to run down the (presumably) fleeing prey. If you think about it, you can often see similar behaviors in horror movies and nature documentaries. It probably adds to the visceral sense of unease a GOOD horror movie produces in you. The primal fear of being chased down in the dark by something hungry and eager to feed whatever appetite has driven it to hunt you.
Usually horror films don’t scare me unless I was already on edge, but this one was truly unnerving. That face was grotesque enough so as to be creepy, but not overdone. What I appreciated especially is that instead of filming in the dark (which makes everything difficult to see) they chose to leave on the lights for the majority of the film, allowing the monster to be fully visible.
Was watching this on my phone & got to the part of the curtain, I was like 'omg i see something!' Just then a message from a friend that said 'seeeeeeee' popped on the screen. I screamed & dropped my phone XD. Was an excellent combo :D loved it!
