In this video I demo why "Turtling" is fine and anyone telling it isn't doesn't understand tactics and how everything that works is useful :)

The "don't know what you're doing" part is really important. A lot of people play blind/non-min maxed runs even on maddening. A lot of times your units aren't up to snuff to tank multiple units or deal enough damage without 1/2 additional units helping them.
When you also don't know if the map has surprise mechanics, additional spawns, or some other stuff. The only way to be "safe" is to be extra careful. Especially if any of the mentioned surprises or spawns can just kill your units.
So the only way to get through a lot of tough crowds is to bait/turtle.

Very true, the game loves to hit you with surprise attack ninja squad reinforcements so it makes sense to be cautious on maddening mode.

Turtling on Eirika's paralogue is optimal. You avoid the wyvern Knight reinforcements and as a result you never have to worry about getting dive bombed as a result. I also turtle on leif's paralogue by aggroing him with astral storm on a covert unit. Turtling is heavily encouraged in some of the maps in engage and the fell xenologue especially too. Also love the chess talk and about the art of war book.

I tend to use one unit, usually the one with the highest AVO or DEF, to lure out enemy units and kill the ones that come out to attack them once I'm on the Player Phase again. Sometimes I do bolder strategies when I'm under a time limit, such as using a unit with Canto to hit and run a long-range or mounted Enemy unit, allowing my others to advance farther.

I like these takes. In almost all games that have some strategic component, be it singleplayer, multiplayer, co-op, ... I am always a more defensive player. I understand the game's mechanics and I can play faster or more aggressive, but I just enjoy the slow pace more. As an extension, I am someone who hates timed missions, which is why Engage's chapter 24 (I think, the one with the avalanches) was one I did not enjoy. I beat it no problem, but I simply did not enjoy the experience because of the time limit.
And I've had people call me out on my playstyle as it being cowardly, boring or suboptimal. But I don't play to optimize. I play to enjoy myself. And I enjoy setting up a line of armor units and see these enemies hit me for 6 damage tops, only for me to then bring out my big guns and wipe out whoever survived the counter attack. I am apparently among the rare few that absolutely LOVES using Generals and Great Knights, but well. They simply fit the playstyle I enjoy the most. Gryphon Knights and Wyvern Riders? I just never seem to be really able to enjoy them.
TLDR: I felt this entire video so hard. As a slow, defensive player in FE and so many other games, I've learned to just shrug off the speedster elitists. Turtle and the hare and all that jazz.

Awesome video coffee! Use what strategies you enjoy and are effective and be willing to try new ones regardless of what people say I totally agree.

Engage youre basically free to beat the game in whatever way you want like turtling etc because Engage didnt really have any maps with special win conditions if i remember correctly. they were all rout the boss, all enemies, or flee in ch11. In past games we've had maps where an objective needed to be completed in under 25 turns or just kill boss in under 25 turns but yeah. we did have one mission like usual where its save the ally before the enemy kills them / they suicide with Jade in ch.9 and Saphir in 19, but those werent too hard imo. not as hard as keeping Jeralt alive lol. bosses in the game weren't tremendously frightening either. when i was younger i remember playing some fire emblem games and suddenly the boss would start moving into you and it was terrifying, but in this game besides the extra health the bosses weren't really that bad even when they ran at you or when there where 5 of them (ch16?)

oh also Diamant chapter where you protect the castle, i guess. and i forgot Byleth paralogue. also almost wish they overran you with more units in Micaiah paralogue too and you had to survive an X amount of turns. Still having the option to just rush micaiah too tho

Slow pushing is different than turtling, turtling is waiting for the enemy to come and attack you first, slow push is still making forward progression and making the first move.

No wonder I love ur gameplay so much as another chess connoisseur. I wouldn't even call I "turtling" I would coin it as strategical placement/movement to ascertain an advantage on the next couple of moves.

Turtling is how I survived maddening Ch11 and a skirmish on Anna's paralogue map. Or rather, keeping the party together.
But what do I know. I watch your videos because you seem more intelligent than certain others whereas I'm not intelligent at all.

I fully believe that turtling is dependent on the map, and not just the playstyle itself. (Aka its bad if you lose out on extras or more importantly when you have a small amount of turns to beat a map.)

Turtiling never a bad stratagy in any fire emblem game (unless there's a strict turn count) but the problem is its boring as fuck to most players. In response the devs try to design maps that incestivise faster and more risker gameplay through missable rewards, characters or reinforcements. The whole of conquest (besides the furry hell) is designed around this idea and the general consensus is that conquest has some of the best map design in the series.
People like to have fun in their games and when a strategy isn't all that fun to pull off people tend to use it. This causes the wider community to view turtling as inferior to other strategies because of the notion that "if no one is using it it cant be good". On top of this turtiling has a negative connotation from other games and that notion can carry over when playing fire emblem.

Turtling can be boring for sure, I actually prefer shorter / faster maps so ideally maps last for 15-30 minutes like your standard multiplayer game match. IMO the entire game needs to be much faster on the highest difficulty without doing LTC style tactics to achieve this result.

hi, wanted to do my 1st maddening run after watching ur guides lol but I had some questions
just did chapter 3 and I want to have as much xp on Alear and Framme as possible but I end up killing some ennemies with other characters so what do u do ? how do u know if u just send units u won't build to the death (and then ur strong units remaining match each other in arena so they gain more xp) or if u need them for some battles ?
and do u just have to jauge ? like oh okay i need to miss some xp and kill this ennemy with an unit i won't build coz otherwise he'll be a problem

    • @IcedCoffeeGaming
      @IcedCoffeeGaming  Год назад +1

You don't need to strictly feed XP into your main units you plan on using, you can to optimize these units XP/levels but it can be overkill.

I've played all the fire emblems released in the west and while I've never hated armors or understood really why others say they're a bad class, I have never hid behind an armor unit as much as I have Louis in engage on maddening. For me Louis was as much a mandatory deploy as Alear, enemies hit way too often at 30 hit for me to trust my other units to dodge and the enemy density is such that even units I have that can one round on enemy phase will get whittled away by either undodged hits or chain attacks. Louis just has the hp and def with ike on top to just survive out there on enemy phase and my other units will clean up the enemies he didn't ruin.

My current run didn’t use Louis beyond chapter 5. I just don’t see him as a necessary deploy. But he’s not a terrible unit and can be pretty good when invested
