Outdoor pizza oven - building the stand

  • This is the first in a series of videos I’ll share detailing the construction of an outdoor wood-fired dome pizza oven... which your house needs! For this step I dig the foundation, pour the slab, lay the block, reinforce the walls, frame/reinforce/pour the top.

    Wow, you filled a 3 foot wall with cement and rebar?? This thing will survive an earthquake. Great video nonetheless and looking forward to the next one. One thing though that most people forget (I've built two of these) - Insulate the oven floor. Makes a big difference. (also like homemade cement vibrator, smart)

      Thanks! Yes, I’m gonna use 4” of 5:1 vermicrete under the dome floor.

      @@troylee3179 Haven’t done that yet. What I’m working on now is laying brick all around the stand. This brick will continue 4” past the top of the stand and the cavity that creates will be filled with a 5:1 vermiculite:portland mix. The dome will be built on top of that.

      @@troylee3179 Two ways (depending on availability)
      Best way - On existing cement base put on 1 inch vermiculite sheets (then put 1/4 inch sand on top for leveling and put fire bricks on the sand).
      Other possibility: Make base from perlite/cement mix (5 parts perlite - 1 part portland cement), then sand on top for leveling and then fire bricks on sand)
      When putting the fire bricks on the sand keep entire floor as level as possible (lightly tapping bricks with hammer until very secure and straight) and I strongly suggest you use a Herringbone pattern for the bricks.

      My brick for the next step is supposed to be here at the end of this week. Will probably have another video up in like 2 weeks.

    For the rebar you place vertically in the blocks, were they freestanding or did you drill into the base to secure them first? Subscribed as I'm planning my oven now

      They are not drilled into the base. It’s just sitting in the cinderblock cavity filled in with cement.

    Been doing some research on pizza oven stands with cinder blocks. Coring these blocks with cement all the way through with rebar seems to be overkill. I saw that pros will cap a row of blocks and only core/rebar the block for framing purposes.
    I just capped my top row and poured my 4 inch slab on top of it and it ain’t going nowhere!!! We’re not building houses so we can ease up on the concrete and rebar usage on these pizza ovens.

      True. It was definitely overkill. But I would have just tossed my extra material. And the rebar gave me a good way to suspend the horizontal rebar.

      I’ll make a short. I’m working a little bit each day, but brick laying is slow going for an armature.
