Really my English teacher was like: Guy’s they are gay, this is super homoerotic. And I thought the same thing when I read it, but I didn’t trust that, until he said it. And then we watched the movie and I saw this, and was shocked

My teacher said that they don’t get together or anything but it’s clear that they are more than friends and showed us the clip of the kids today in English. 😂

Most deep friendships between two men are straight. Somewhere in the 1950’s, these postmodernist types like Gore Vidal got the idea that there must be a gay element to every bromance so they used their theory to interpret every such relationship in books and plays before their time where it may never have occurred to the actual author.

As an ICSE student I can confirm my entire class believes Antonio is Bassanio's sugar daddy and the reason Antonio is sad at the beginning of the play is because he knows Bassanio is going to marry Portia. My heart :( 💔

Haha, right? And with the both of them played by the gorgeous Joseph Fiennes and the lovely Jeremy Irons. They bring the love onscreen. Yet what straight guy will have a sugar daddy and still be flattered so very much, especially back at that time?

  • @sidneyfrederickson3941

According to Joseph Fiennes and Michael Radford, that kiss was not planned. Fiennes has done extensive research and concluded that Antonio had an unrequited love for Bassanio. Bassanio knew it, had been using it to his own advantage and rewarded Antonio with little surprises like this, hence Jeremy Irons fleeting look of surprise at the unexpected kiss.

I am no scholar but I read the play for the first time and was struck by how intensely Antonio loves Bassanio. I thought it was unrequited but then Bassanio parts with his Portia’s ring in the instance that Antonio invokes his love for him...I...am no scholar but I have a heart and a brain so all I have to say is..Gay and European.

It doesn't take "extensive research" to surmise Antonio's love for Bassanio - he refers to it over and over. Bassanio takes calculatedly seductive poses in asking for money. Irons assures him he will use his credit with astute resignation - he can't help himself from aiding Bassanio in this way, though he knows better.

    • @elektra121

Of course he lied to Salarino! What should he have said? "Yes, boys, you got me - I'm in love with a man! And now let's burn me on the stake!"? (Which was the Venetian punishment for being a sodomite.)
That guy literally pawned *his heart* to his worst enemy, to give a fortune (more than half a million pounds or about three quarter of a million US-Dollars by todays standards) to someone who can't handle money! What, do you believe, could be his motive, Sherlock?

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this movie for what it was but to be fair even though there are some lines that could be construed that Antonio was gay for Bassanio, it’s never flat out said. Its possible Shakespeare meant for us to decide for ourselves if they were gay or like brothers. The director should have simply had Antonio place his hand on Bassanio’s arm during a line or two and looked at him a certain way to keep the ambiguity. The kiss was about as subtle as a poke in the eye.
