My buddy sent his trail cam pics from Iowa. It’s like he’s on a different planet. A beautiful different planet.
Haha, yes a beautiful different planet 😁
I remember as a kid my dad and uncle would make their own lead slugs for their muzzleloaders 😅
Now that's pretty dang cool Kurt!
Congratulations on a nice buck in PA .years of that kind of consistency your doing something right
I appreciate that Norm, always appreciate you! Hope you are having an incredible season!
Gave all my centerfire rifles to my boys ,Muzzle loader exclusively for all fire arm seasons.Excellent accuracy and more killing power than needed.I love mine too Jeff!
So much fun Tex! I'm with you 👍
Always great information. Even for someone that's never owned one. I've thought about getting a muzzy, but I've never had access to the size property needed to be able to hunt with one. Every place I've been able to hunt has been bow only or at most a 12 gauge distance. Under 75 yards for sure. So I never had a reason to get anything that will reach out a couple hundred yards. Maybe one day.
I shoot a very similar set up and to bypass the multiple cleanings as soon as I feel the bullet start to get tougher to load (usually after shot 2 or 3 for me) I use a 45 cal wire brush wrapped with one bore butter seasoned patch which goes right on my ram rod. It saves a lot of cleaning and keeps your bore seasoned for multiple shots throughout the hunting season and only improves accuracy.
I’ve had some of my best hunts during muzzle loader season. Not just Wisconsin but out west as well. Lots of great opportunity to be had!
So true Peter...and a very peaceful time in the woods!
Blackhorn 209 is a excellent powder if it works with your gun/breach. Some manufactures make separate breach plugs to be used with it. Some ML are known to not work well with it, the Omega being one of them.
Awesome Video Guys!
Love the Hat Jeff
Picked up 2 MRX 50cal with Leopold ultimate slam scopes for me & my Dad.
Following your advice to a T !
Thank you & Much Respect Carlo! 🇨🇦
That's awesome Carlo, really appreciate you and man...ENJOY!! Such a great ML combo and so much fun for you guys to be able to hunt...
My accura loves hornady bore drivers. Both 290 gr ftx and 340 eld-x. The 340s buck wind a lot better than the 290s but haven’t shot a deer with either yet to see how they perform. Iowa starts this weekend so hopefully I’ll find out soon.
Congrats on your pa buck .. beautiful !
I bought a nitro fire this year.. shoots great, cant wait to break it in 👍🦌
Thank you and man, I bet you can't! Pretty dang cool
i remember several times in the 80's when my #11 muzzleloaders didnt go off when aiming at deer. sometimes the cap would go off but not the powder. present day i am using a cva accura as well, 100gr of pyrodex and a barnes tez 250gr bullet, it may be my most accurate gun ever. i clean between every shot at the range, my first shot during hunting season will be out of a clean barrel so that how i sight in. you really should look into getting a BDC scope. its very helpful for different ranges without having to guess with KY windage.
Thanks Jeff
I have a wolf by cva I run the 777 150 grain and the Hornady eldx 340gr it holds 1/2 inch groups at 100 and if ppl are new or put a new optic on it they can do the 13 yard zero to get them close. Will be high at 50 and dead on at 75 yards and right at inch low at 100 yards dropped a doe at 85 yards dead in her tracks on opening day of muzzle loader season. I have run 209 powered but cva has a special breach plug you have to use as well. Learnt that the hard way it’s easier to use pellets instead of lose powder. And when I’m sighting it in I clean after each shot . I can normally shoot three times before it’s get really hard to load.
To the viewers who are new to muzzleloading or shooting in general. Pay close attention to what he said about the camera on the barrel. Anything mounted to the barrel will shift your point of impact. May not amount to much inside of 50 yards, but for longer shots it matters. Second - his recipe for his muzzleloader load may not work well at all for you. Spend some time with various powder charges and bullet/sabot combinations to find the sweet spot for your rifle. I had decent luck with the Barnes pellets and sabots, but it was a game changer when I switched to Harvester ribbed sabots that were available in slightly different sizes to suit my specific bore on my old knight DISC rifle. I can hold 1.5" groups at 150 yds with 120 gr 777 pellets (2 60 gr pellets) and 209 primers. Again, my recipe probably won't be your best recipe, but it pays to play with the options until you find your happy place.
Can’t beat the Barnes!
Very hard to!
I need to blow off some trails for easy access to deer stand. I plan to do it in the mid day to early afternoon. Hope to open up acorns and such. Is this okay to do this time of year? I’m young 19 have no one to teach me. Thanks love your RUclips videos
I use a very similar process. I tape the end of my muzzle with electrical tape to keep moisture/condensation to a minimum in the barrel. I also put tape over the top of the action seam to reduce the chance of moisture getting to my non magnum 209 primer. I have never had a primer failure in the field. Any primers that I carried in the previous season are used to practice with. All primers/loads are kept in ziplock bags in the field for additional protection from moisture. Powder and primer supplies are kept in a sealed ammo box. GOOD LUCK AND ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO.
Love those tips Jack, man really appreciate it! Tips from experience for sure 😊
Thanks Jeff great info
I also keep my gun in pole barn
How often do you switch your powder in the season if at all
Same combo I use except power belt platinums I should try the Barnes though
Your setup is very similar to mine but I have a CVA wolf so my range is natural shorter. I use the same powder you use but I use thw powerboat areolite bullets. I can hold a 3 inch group at 125yrds. My muzzleloader is the only gun I use when it comes to deer hunting. I think it's very fun to shoot. I've killed a lot of deer with a muzzleloader.
I love muzzleloaders! Just hated cleaning them so I custom built a smokeless muzzleloader. Deadly out to 700 yards so far!
Dang that's awesome!
Make a little RUclips video and let us all know its up... I'd love to see that 👍👍
I’m with you. Here in Pa we can only shoot doe with an inline if u want to shoot a buck you have to use regular flint if you hunt the muzzleloader season. During rifle season u can use whatever and I think it’s ridiculous not to take advantage of the technology.
Jeff what’s your thoughts on the traditions nitfrofire or CVA crossfire? They seem super easy and safe and are legal in my state. That accura Mr-x is the one I’ve handled and loved the soft touch stock it has but been considering those 2 other types with the firestick since I’ve never used one before
I use a Knight MK-85 with 209 primer and a power belt platinum, triple seven powder, very accurate at 100 yards
Sorry I was wrong I use power belt arrow lite bullets
Very nice!
Boss gave me a cva acura 50cal with the longer barrel. So this is my first muzzleloader season. Haven't been able to do a ton of testing but I have found 77gr of blackhorn with a 395gr power belt was my most reliable and consistent load. I have found it is more accurate at longer ranges then my many 12 and 20ga slug guns. I may start using it during the firearm season aswell in southeast Minnesota
77 may be accurate but not enough punch for a ethical kill.i learned the hard way
77 gr by weight, which is about 100gr by volume I have found. I chose to weigh it to be more consistent. I have noticed the tubes to measure volume are not accurate at all
Some great tips, Jeff! Appreciate the video as always, though I must correct something, muzzle loaders in general, are not “less affected by the wind” compared to centerfire rifles. Wind deflection is a function in ballistic coefficient and velocity.
The ballistic coefficient of the bullet you’re using is 0.189 and you’re getting a muzzle velocity around 1800 fps with two pellets totaling 100 gr.
At 10 mph crosswind you’ll get around 21.5” of wind drift at 250 yards.
Compared to a .308 Winchester 150 gr Barnes load, you’d get 5” of wind drift at 250 yards.
Just going by the heavier bullet...but that makes sense!
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yup I gotcha it’s a common misconception guys have. You’re not the only one!! Great video either way!
Love my TC Omega! I use a 250 grain Barnes bullet and weigh out my loads with Blackhorn! It’s a tack driver! Even though I’ve looked at a nitrofire
Very nice setup Drew!! Love it
Nitros are so easy to use and clean 👍
I use the American Pioneer, Jim Shockey Gold for powder . I can shoot as many as 15 before I need to clean it. You should give them a shot, I’ve found them a lot cleaner then triple 7’s. you can get them in 50 or 100 gr sizes, so you can use one “stick” instead of 2 pucks. Never shot them out to 250 tho. Our muzzle loader starts next Monday 🤞🏻
Great advice...thank you!
Your drops on shots 2, 3 and 4 are likely due to friction in the dirtier barrel thats lowering muzzle velocity. I use 90 grain loose powder and the cva claw rifle strap speedloaders. Holds 4 primers and 3 tubes of powder. I keep the rounds and sabots in a specific pocket rather than the speedloader because loose powder can get around the sabot.
Oh for sure!
I had an misfire with my traditions pursuit with BH 209 loose powder biggest buck of my life this year maybe I try your way seems pretty easy and reliable
The cool thing is accuracy doesn't have to suffer. Great accuracy out to 200 yards+ and an extremely reliable ignition. Not for the purest bench shooter...just for the hunter.
Hopefully the magnum 209 primers come back in stock can’t find any no where all on back order.
Jeff, i heard you say you shoot Barnes Spitfire TEZ 250 GR sabots, but then your "showed" a box of what you shoot also? What was that box?? Thanks for all your help!!
I had a bad experience with CVA Kodiak with hang fire now I'm always looking up when the gun goes off it seems to be a problem I'm having
I caught the hunting bug this year. I figured I would just go out during gun season. I bought a crossbow at the start of archery season because I couldn't wait for gun season. I started looking seriously at a muzzle loader when I realized I only had a few days off to hunt gun season. Then I read the muzzle loading hunting regulations, and in my zone I can use my straight wall rifle, shotgun, and crossbow. I guess I'll just use my rifle for the rest of the year.
you could use your crossbow thoughout the entire season as well because of archery anyways? no? Why buy a muzzle loader if you didn't want to anyways?
The key with blackhorn is having the correct breech plug and standard primers. You shouldn't have the issue unless moisture gets down the barrel or plug.
It's the constant change in temps and moisture conditions over the course of almost 2 months off use and several seasons in various states for me.
Hi Jeff, I have 25 acres of dense young white pines, 10-15 feet tall. I can’t walk through it, but I see deer, bucks included come in and out of there all the time into my field. The pines back up to a lake on one side. Not sure how to go about cleaning those pines up so I can have access/create bedding. It’s 100% young white pines with thicket in between
I’ve watched tons of your videos, I just have an interesting situation with the lake on one side, roads on 2 and hardwoods on the other. I’ve made dozens of designs im just fighting with myself over what to do or how to create bedding in the white pine
What do you think of the white hot 50grain pellets? I have some to try but haven't shot them yet.
I tried them, just tried to replicate my 777 load. Didn't give me good results in my rifle. Not saying they're junk, but had a recipe that worked well and didn't want to start over.
Jeff
What solvent do you use to clean the 777 powder in your muzzleloader?
Soap and water is best honestly
Now I see why you had such a big ass shit grin as you talk about your scope and how it's your favorite! bahahah! Really awesome scope, no doubt! She's just a few dollars over the ole budget I got going on over here for my CVA lmao. Now that it's legal to hunt whitetail with a scope on our muzzle loaders here in MN. (I think that law changed 2 or 3 years ago or something?) I have yet to pop my muzzle loader cherry though and since I'm weird, and have a hunting checklist or bucket list if you will. I would like to plug a deer with open sights first before I put a scope on the ole smoke pole anyways just so I can say I've done it/check it off my list before I put a scope on er.
Where I hunt we have a lot of standing corn still. Any tips on hunting stand corn going late into the season?
I LOVE hunting thick cover next to that corn...watching the in and out deer trails for bedding/food movement
I shoot the V2 with a Nikon in line scope.Use 2 pellets and 245 aero tip
I bet that's a great shooter D!
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I hit a good one Saturday 137 yards.Shot my gun at 137 today and I think that deer is dead.Got permission from my neighbor to go look for it.I really need closure.
In MI they changed the law so that down state in the limited rifle zone you dont have to use a muzzleloader during early december, you can use the 450. Do you think that muzzleloader season leads to less pressure on public in the Northern Half and UP of MI? If so I might buy one just to get out during a lower pressure time on some big pieces of public.
Hi Grant...WAY less pressure up north during the ML season!! Very little...you would like that!
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 thanks for the feedback, love your videos, I am a bookworm, you ever thought of putting everything into a book???
Jeff what kind of backpack did you use to pack your deer out on your Pennsylvania hunt I just watched
Hi Corey, that was the First Lite transfer pack...love it!
Would have to be deboned tho
Shot my muzzleloader for the second time the other day. 2nd shot i forgot to take out the rod. It kicked twice as hard as my single shot 10ga. Rod went through the plywood target and is gone forever.
Omg😂🤣🤣
EZ-blood trails!!
What about white hot powder????
Hi Emily, I haven't tried it. I'm not a big fan of powder only because I shoot 30 to 50 times per year and really enjoy the pellets
Fire stick legal in TN
Traditions website lists all legal states 👍👍
🦌😁
Hope you can get out Connor!
Why wouldn’t you use a rifle instead of a muzzy during gun season? Wouldn’t you want that extra yardage or better certainty when taking those 200 yard shots? Legit question, I’m curious. I’ve never used a muzzleloader and they make me nervous because the one person I knew who got one blew his fingers off 😮 and posted it all over social media blaming the company with a faulty rifle
A dirty breech plug wasn't your issue with BH209... it was a breech plug not intended for BH209 that was ALSO dirty... make a video shooting 10 shots in a row without cleaning with 777 pellets vs BH209...
Just use the proper breech plug for the proper powder. Simple.
