Critical First Sit Monster Buck Hunting Strategy

  • More time in the stand equals more deer, right? Wrong. If your goal is to shoot a big whitetail buck once or twice in your lifetime, hunt as many hours as you can! However, if your goal is to shoot one or two big bucks EVERY hunting season, then you have to hunt very patiently and choose your sits very wisely. This is a display of of my best bucks (top 14) and it should come as no surprise, that most were shot the first time using the stand for that hunting season. Less is more when it comes to consistently shooting target whitetail bucks and I hope my lifetime of buck hunting success offers some great lessons for your own future big buck hunting success. In the end, you really can shoot more bucks by sitting on the couch and if someone challenges you that you should hunt as many hours as you can, ask to see their wall of whitetails ☺️

    That’s crazy, as I was listening to this I went around my basement trophy room in my head. And every buck was either first or second sit in that blind. I have a lot of mediocre bucks that have been killed in those blinds you have named on the farm. But the big ones take a new blind at the perfect time. As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to sleep in a bit on some of those blinds not to ruin them. Thanks for all your hard work and sharing your info. After 45 years of hunting I am still learning. Your videos get my hunting mo jo flowing.

    Hey brother. I’ve officially got control of the land my huntin lease is on now. My neighbor had the place leased for horses but he sold them. He gave the lease up and I took it all over today. I paid the 1st lease money today. I’m excited. I’m goin to put up more posted signs. The owner has another guy wantin it but he didn’t want anybody on it. The owner said that won’t work. He let me have it today. He knows me well I help him bush hog and fix fences just whatever he needs doin and he let me hunt. He gave the lease to me I control who can and can’t go on it now. I’m trying to teach my young nephew that if he will help people do stuff they’ll be good to him.

    Great bunch of deer you have. Being a paraplegic hunter I certainly understand the patients game. Here in Maine the rifle season is only a month long so opportunities are few and far between. Another fantastic video. thanks. What would you say is the appropriate distance between stands, so that each count as a single "first sit" specifically in the Midwest. Say i have stands about 250 yards apart. Is that sufficient distance between stands that each stand could have their own individual "first" sit?

    Always great content! I just have to say I really appreciate that you draw the difference between large tracts of land to small/medium tracts. I have grown up hunting a 10 acre, 8 acres, then a friends 80 and now last year I bought 30 acres. On my property I hunted twice last year. First hunt was opening day and I shot a doe in sep and second hunt was end of oct when I had a shooter buck show up on a scrape on my cell cam. Killed him the next day scored 136+ biggest buck to date. For a living a manage I 2000 acres for hunting here in the ozarks of AR. We currently have over 60 acres of row crops with fall blends being rotated in. The habitat plans between the smaller property’s I hunt vs the property I manage differ very much. I focus on thick cover on my small property’s for fall/winter and on the 2000 acre piece we have thick smaller areas that get hunted and big areas of summer green areas for fawn/turkey poults. All this to say to someone who is not sure about what opinion to follow for their property the size does matter very much and you are 100% correct about how what type of cover you have for hunting season will determine where the deer are for it. Definitely helps being able to see the full year of a deers life to know what they want during different times of the year!

    thanks for mentioning the fact that you can harvest a nice buck on the 100th sit in 90 degrees lol. That's the fun to me, anything at any moment can pop out where you least expect it to in all the wrong wind direction. Thanks for the other info. Also, I might be bummed to shoot a buck very first sit cuz I love the woods. If i got a nice buck 1st sit my wife would surely think why go back out? lol

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 лет назад

      Ha, Travis I can understand you would want to still hunt, lol! There is always the luck of any day, but the first sit strategy is for those that want to consistently shoot the best bucks in the area. Honestly I would rather fish than sit on bad days...hike...spend time with family...bird hunt, etc. BUT bottom line you never get to experience those bad days if you force the hunt. Those bucks are still there but man the odds are just so extremely low. Hope that makes sense! Maybe find more states and tags to hunt 😁 Wait don't blame me for that one with the wife tho, lol

  • @Wiseguy-eq9dm
    @Wiseguy-eq9dm 5 лет назад +1

    Loving the content Jeff!!! Hopefully the wind is perfect October 1st my first sit will be over a monster public land buck bed that I have zero chance of setting up on this guy any farther without getting busted it’s literally the ultimate bed in one of the most random places nobody ever hunts. Here’s my plan it’s a morning only spot I’m going to sneak into the bedroom extremely early in the morning before he gets home.should be a great hunt if the wind is right.whats the earliest you seen a buck bed in the morning Jeff??

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 лет назад +1

      Often they in their beds in the early season a few hours before daylight but it is really tough to define. One of the greatest buck bed tips is where they are bedding in August and early Sept are typically not where they are bedding in early October 🙂 If you truly think he is in there I would get in there 2-3 hours prior to light. BUT, if you can hunt him the evening when he comes out it is a much higher potential big success ..AND you don't spook him out. Spook him out 1 time in the morning your sit is over before it begins, and for the rest of the season most likely in that entire movement. In the evening you can get multiple chances for him and he will typically leave his bedding area at a minimum an hour prior to dark or even earlier if cold and after a front. Good luck with him!

    • @Wiseguy-eq9dm
      @Wiseguy-eq9dm 5 лет назад

      He’s a slick one beds with his back to a major freeway he’s 20yrds from it. Has apple trees,oaks and a creek all within 75 yards from the bed. I don’t think he’s traveling far from the bed and he has the dominant wind in his favor and the 3 acres of timber he’s bedding in he has great sight the timber isn’t very thick. He’s using 2 trails 1 for the creek and the other heads into a patch of apple trees. His escape trail is along the freeway where there is nowhere to set up..I definitely think hell spot me trying to get in there for a night hunt

      Oh for sure...people want to hunt! The big thing is getting to know the extreme amount of damage they can do when hunting at the wrong time. I believe there are a few 50% success sits...mostly 1-3% sits. The more 1-3% sits you make, the more you chip away substantially at the 50% sits to the point that you could eliminate them. Great brand pic btw 😁

      All about priorities...doesn't cost much if you don't spend your money on a nicer house, a boat, machines, a new truck, bowling leagues, booze, cigarettes, fancy vacations...the list goes on and on. AND if you work extra hours for it. That requires budgeting. Anyone can do it if they make it a priority.

    Hi Jeff, always enjoy your videos, very educational. I have a question, it may be a simple one but it’s always been trial and error with me. How do you set up your cameras? Location to your Treestand hunting area? Quantity of cameras to determine what direction the deer are coming from.
    I do not have the expensive $200 cameras, but the cheap $29 Walmart cameras. (with public lands , I don’t want to risk losing a good camera)I hunt public land small parcel, across the street from me, my stand is approximately 1000 feet from the road so it’s easy access to check the camera. One other thing, do I set up the camera by the feeder? Or by the stand? And how far away should I set the feeder from the stand? I do not have food plots, so I have to bring in bags of corn into a corn feeder. As I said before I don’t have the abilities of hunting lodge parcels of land. They may be dumb questions, but maybe someone else that watches your video run into the same situations. As always enjoy your videos and thank you if you reply.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Bob, man I wish I had time to answer all of those questions...BUT I do have a trail cam playlist here on my channel ☺️.
      Almost all of my cameras I can shoot with a bow from my treestands or blinds for bowhunting. All are around 6' high on a tree wider than the camera, with the profile hidden with another trunk or brush...and absolutely no red ir flash. Those red IR bulbs are a location killer! I typically have 4-5 on a 40 acre parcel...5-6 on 80 acres, nearly all on a vertical mock scrape, waterhole or both. I then change the cards when hunting only. On public land I place cameras on a scrape in key funnel areas. I don't care on public of the buck shows up day or night...just that he shows up!

    • @bobmederos270
      @bobmederos270 5 лет назад

      Whitetail Habitat Solutions Thanks Jeff I appreciate the quick reply, I did watch your video on trail cameras, but in New Jersey it doesn’t relate to this type of hunting area. Most New Jersey hunters don’t have big parcels of land. And the wildlife management areas, public land, are so heavily traffick, pattering of deer are very difficult. I’ve been successful in everything I’ve done for hunting , I don’t shoot does, and I harvest eight pointers and up. But in New Jersey they don’t get any bigger. Once again thank you for your reply, and I guess you’ve never hunted with corn feeders, in New Jersey corn feeders are quite common. Once again love your videos keep up the good work.

      Hi Jeremy it sure is effective. I have an entire chapter dedicated to hunting in the rain in my recent, All Weather Whitetails book...but the short of it is that heavy rain...even moderate rain or snow, can and does suppress deer movement. I like hunting the holes in the rain, sometimes right before... definately when you have a few hours in between and of course when it ends. There is often a great chance to pop into a stand when it is raining, using the cover noise and site to enter without spooking deer...and then wait for the opening in the clouds 🙂 good luck!

      I've seen and shot some of my biggest bucks during the "breaks" in the rain and immediately after it stops. But you gotta go in during the rain and wait for it to clear. If you're waiting in your truck or at home for the rain to stop before going, you're too late.

      BUT TONs of info on it.
      I hunt mature bucks cruising between doe bedding, going back to their beds or cruising between buck beds in the morning. Well away from food. Just like detailed in the video about the 15 point buck...also "The Morning Sneak" chapter in my first book, and online. www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com/blog/morning-sneak-tactics-for-mature-buck

    When counting first sits, are you counting that as a stand in the area? I have 6-8 stands on roughly 60 acres, so not much spacing between them. Would each stand count as it's own, or are you crossing off a grouping of stands if you sit in an area?

Also, most ask of the bucks I have history with for multiple years, so I can go by previous year's trail cam pictures and proof of life after the season. The target bucks I am after this season I know are alive...just a matter of me waiting until the dates, get a good weather day and go hunt...very methodical.
