Jeff, you are the best in the business. Absolutely love your videos. You're the real deal because you are about knowledge and strategy...not selling products and the latest gimmicks. Thank you for this video. I hunt a small property that I live on (30 acres) in Southern MN. I had high expectations for this season based on deer I was getting on camera. After I had a no-shot close encounter with my target buck the day before gun opener, my season felt like it went downhill. Deer sightings drastically went down. I went through my whole gun season without seeing much. I was so frustrated I was ready to give up. Your video got my spirits up again and hope for the remainder of my bow season. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and making so it is down to earth and not all hyped up with gadgets and garbage. Since I started watching these videos it has changed the way I hunt for the better. Hoping to implement more of your strategies and putting my own twist on them to work for me and my areas.
Got my biggest buck to date last Nov.24th secondary rut. Was hunting alfalfa field edge with a hardwood mast staging area behind me. Does were feeding in the hardwoods just waiting to hit the alfalfa after dark but three bucks came smashing thru the staging area and pushed the does right past me which in turn brought the bucks into my stand area. This particular buck went through a series of snort wheezes and was very aggressive towards the does because they were not putting up with this guys nonsense. I've seen this late rut first hand for the first time last year and got a few days I can hunt in the next week and a half. Thanks for your videos. They do really help.
I didn't hunt my UP land on opening day because the wind direction was wrong. The next two days we saw a lot of deer, the wife decided she was meat hunting and took does, but the young bucks didn't seem to care they kept coming through. I saw more (young) bucks than ever in two days. I still haven't hunted two stands in the back, but I haven't seen any mature bucks on the cameras, I think I'll save them for next year as plenty of bucks to grow hanging around now, thanks for the concepts.
Am, sounds like you had a great time Rick! Really cool to hear and congrats to your wife! Hope you were able to get up some tasty tenderloins ☺️ Actually sounds good right now!
I hunt in PA but our gun season doesn’t open till early December. We’ve had a lot of success in recent years while hunting the secondary rut and it’s one of my favorite times of the year!
I'm looking forward to hunting PA this season...I think Diane and I are coming out. The later opener like this year should be right in the Secondary rut! This will be my 19th PA opener since 93 of I make it out. Perfect timing for it, for sure!
Great videos , I'm a novice Hunter but have walked and small game Hunted the Manistee Nation forest in Michigan ALOT , just using a pre 64 Winchester this year and had a small doe come by while ground hunting yesterday !!! I scared it because I wasn't patient enough . I'm going for meat this year I tend to hunt evenings , and will be thrilled to just get a good doe !!! Lots to learn , I'm ground hunting focusing on noise . Yesterday I put myself between 2 fallen trees on side of a hill with wind to my favor . Today will be 4 nights in a row 😀😀😀
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Thanks alot , I'm starting to use some of your tips ! I'm hunting an area I know really well , it's hollowed ground to me , my grandparents built a chalet write in the area in 1968 it's still occupied, there gone . I walked through a neighbors field yesterday write past it with permission from there old neighbor 85 years old who I visit. I just like to look at it and think about the old times and amazing Hollidays they put on there.Going tonight again up on a Ridgeline were they cut up through regularly from the edge of a big field past some pines up to the hardwoods were there are a bunch of accorn trees . It's a special area and pretty diverse with the pine River near by and 2 nice creeks. If you ever want to hunt public lands in Wexford county Michigan I know several pretty vast sections intamatley , I couldn't be a deer guide by a long shot , but I could be a "terrain intelligence officer " for you 😀 It's a very neat area . I've even seen a badger in the area 1x , had coyotes half circle me when camping there and go nuts , I chased them off with alot of gun fire and yelling , heard wolfs 1 night , and had huge bear visit my tent on 2 legs one night , talk about freaked out ! Anyhow I live in the area for the woods , not the pay ! Have had alot of very cool adventures and life experiences in the area I suppose I'm pretty lucky to have a place that feels like home again .
Unfortunately I'm tagged out 😂, but another great video jeff you do have the best tips on RUclips that can apply to everyone Public Land or Private. I know you've turned me into a better hunter. Thanks again
Well Caleb, that's not a bad thing 👍 Great job! And thank you very much! I have a huge goal of being able to help all whitetail hunters and your comments mean a lot to me. I really appreciate it!
Great content Jeff, Had a hoot north of Atlanta Michigan on are annual hunt but more tending to my dad than the hunt. He had a great time and thanked me a million times for tolerating his cane and the bum leg this year. Don't think i have hunted with him in the same blind since i was 16! Hope to get up there for some muzzle loading. I seen some does but no opportunities for a good shot. Keep up the great job.
Jeff, the rut was extremely weird here in Northeast Georgia this year. November 1st i had deer all over and by the 10th which is typically peak rut they just disappeared i still had fresh sign like scrapes and rubs but absolutely no daylight activity. I personally think the full moon had something too do with it and I'm not a big moon skeptic at all. What's your opinion Jeff?
I've experienced the same scenario, with does clearing the field. Eventually they came back and I had 4 does and 4 bucks in the field. Had 24 🦃 an hour before. Your right about those afternoon food sources. Was in a club last year, 3 people missed the same buck on our biggest plot. I went to our second biggest plot and got him.
Hey Jeff. Could you please make a video about accessing a property that is surrounded by Ag. fields on three sides while the back side is all woods that butts up to the neighbors. In the morning it has worked most of the time to access during gray light, but at night the deer are always on the fields and it is extremely difficult to get out without spooking those deer. Also. It is difficult because there are two different plantings in the field around us, so when one field gets plowed under the deer will find a way to the other. It makes defining movement very difficult for us. I don’t know if you would recommend being picked up in a truck in this situation or not. Thank you.
have been studying your videos as a first time hunter I think I'll have a good chance ! I go out this saturday morning into the ground blind to see if I can get one!
No luck this go around, but I did spot a new ridiculously large fresh scrape near my setup. It's still mid rut here by me. Gonna take some apples and check em into the area and broadcast a bit of double duty corn too to see if i can get him out. In the open longer into the sunrise. Land owner has pics of him at about 5, 6 am on the property. Not to mention a little for estrus scent as well near the scrape and trail it out in the field. Also working with killing as muchbof my scent possible and trailing some buck scent with me through to my stand and dropping the pad 20 yards short after curling towards the doe setup. Would be next weekend before I get out there. Should I do this Friday night before I go Saturday morning again and watch it unfold?
So hard hunting public land in my area of PA. We have so many over lapping seasons and so much human pressure. I had 4-5 nice buck on camera. Only saw one during daylight and never had a shot. Frustrating. Couple more days of archery in special regulations area. Then gun season Saturday after Thanksgiving. All I can do is hope!! Like your videos. Great information. Wish I had land to apply it to!!
i needed this info, I"m heading back to Wisconsin Thursday to bow hunt a couple days before the gun season. I saw a really nice mature buck 11/2-11/4. He didn't seem to be seeking/chasing at all that weekend. do you think he might have been waiting for the smaller bucks to do their thing and now he might be taking his turn? or do you think he is done too?
My buddy bought 175 acre parcel this past month for hunting. We have 4 guys going to try and help manage. I have watched many of your videos trying to learn. Thank you for all the great info. Do you ever take on clients by putting together property plan without going to their property? Thanks, Jonathan
Jeff what do you consider hot temperatures? I live/hunt at 5K foot all pine forest (black hills of SD). We have no creeks to speak of. No agriculture and extremely limited surface water. I added an old bath tub to my property several years ago and it really defined movement until this year. Between my dad and I we took a138", 157" from the same stand and last week I harvested a121" 150 yards from the first stand
First time hunter here! Love your videos . Thank you for all of your expertise. So, I’m hunting in Southeast Georgia... just curious if your tips apply in my neck of the woods??
What's your go-to late season food source? I'm kind of new to food plots. I planted about 3 acres of brassica mix. The purple top turnips and daikon radishes look like volleyballs and the ends of baseball bats sticking out of the ground. I'm not seeing the deer hitting them like I'd hoped.
Another great video Jeff, thank you. Love your stuff bro 👍. Could you possibly please do a video on tactics for small parcels (30 acres) when food plots/crops are not an option? That would be incredibly helpful. I lease 2 separate 30 acre parcels and I'm not allowed to plant anything on them. The surrounding parcels are pretty high pressure. Just looking for ways to draw in and hold mature bucks. Thanks 👍👍
Love your videos! Quick question for you if you have time to answer. I live in ky and it’s currently nov19. The past two weekends Iv had to hunt have been very disappointing because I feel like I should be seeing all the rut activity. I have yet to shoot a target buck and Iv went all season being extra cautious to not spook the area. It seems the property has gotten less and less appealing as the season has gone on. We haven’t been taking deer or spooking the area I just don’t understand how it could turn off like a light switch and everyone else is bragging about how awesome their rut has been. I’m hunting private land with 1000 acres of unhunted property around me so it’s very low pressure. I was seeing tons on the camera and on my sits in sept-October but the past 3 weeks have been a complete bust. Is this a common issue during the rut? It seems like the opposite of what (should) be happening. I get it that these are animals but it just seems like their unpredictability has been turned into not seeing much of anything. I’d love to hear your thoughts about it. Also I was very touched by your tribute to your late father. I’m very sorry for your loss and my wife and I will be praying for your family.
Hey Jeff. Love your channel. Always have. I'm in the pine barrens of rural South Jersey. Question. Had 3 big bucks(6, 8, and non typical 11)on camera this fall(never got to bow hunt). As recently as one week ago during the rut I had a monster double drop tine 11 pointer pop up. Point is, the past week there's MAJOR traffic and scrapes and rubs in my stand but the camera shows me nothing but small bucks and tons of does. Do them big monster bucks tend to only be around for the rut or will they possibly re emerge post rut for muzzleloader season in 2 weeks do you think? Thanks Jeff.
The great thing about grunting is that it is very low impact and not a real high spook factor. So natural. For me personally, I only grunt when I am attempting to get a buck to come closer...that I feel is not already moving my way. I carry my grunt call for the entire season.
I know my timing is off with this, but I needed to put it in a current video. I'm trying to get my mix and strategy straight for next year with a food plot. I've never made a plot before. I recently put a mock scrap by my stand, and WOW. Thank you for that! Got lot's of attention and bucks I've never had on camera. I'm in a 40 with family in other stands. It's all wooded. About 1/4 is swamp. I'm wondering about adding a waterhole as well, but you make it clear not to food plot and waterhole. Would like a deeper explanation since I want attraction by my stand and I think food plot is better if I need to choose. I cannot cut down trees because of tax stuff on our land. Sort of valley in front of me though. Sorry for the long comment. Hope I can get a bit of your time. You are a smart man. Your fellow mid Wisconsin hunter, Ryan
You said something about a second rut in December? I’ve never heard of this before. When about in the month do you suspect this to happen? Early or late in the month? And what type of tactic would you use to get on them? Stick to the woods or get on a food source? Thanks a bunch I love watching all your videos
Does that haven't been bred, and oftentimes (where I hunt) the smaller does will be in estrus again from mid December to January 1st when our season ends. I go where the does are. The mornings are kinda mixed, but we find the December does like the pines for the mushrooms that seem to sprout then in the AM and the food plots in the afternoon
the 2nd rut is about 28 days after the peak of the first rut. a doe cycles 28 days, and since all does don't cycle at the exact same time, you have to estimate
hey Jeff your videos are awesome! thank you!... Q: I noticed on my camera Nov 7th there was about 6-7 bucks in a row about a minute apart. Would these guys be following each other to find a doe? Do they travel like that from time to time? Im just trying to piece to parts of the puzzle together
The property I hunt is around 90 acres with tons of cover and a few large hay fields then it’s bordered by a 200 acre property that’s probably 75% soybeans. Will it even be worth it to plant a spring/summer food plot since the beans are growing and i’m in northern New York so there is plenty of food. So then do i prioritize a winter food plot or don’t bother at all?
Hey I'm a wny hunter, I have a huge thicket probably 10 acres and an open hardwoods section about half the size on the backside its set in between a creek and a soy bean field there's always doe in the thicket and ive figured out how to get around them without spooning them on an old mowed path that I cleaned up last season during bow season I only had buck come through during the afternoon and during the rut there was even less activity during the a.m. this seems to be opposite of what ive been learning from your videos any suggestions or tips on how I should approach this area during the second rut phase with my gun I'm waiting to hunt this location die to moderate pressure on surrounding properties and I'm trying to give a big 9 point and an even bigger 8 point a safe area with no human activity for the first week or so of gun season here in NY I'm hunting in a climber tree stand that I have pre set in a tree on the esge of creek so on days with a NW. Wnw. Or a north wind my scent gets pushed up a ravine that is to steep for deer to travel I'm watching over about 40 yards of hardwood that but up to an almost impenetrable thicket that goes gradually up hill to the soy beans. Hopeful for a reply and any tips or suggestions and I hope i gave enough info for you to do so. Thabks for the videos!
Hello from the UK. Am I the only person that does not know what you put on the hanging stick to attract those bucks and would it work just the same here for our Fallow and Row deer. New subscriber and enjoy the channel. Thanks very much. Frank
Great information, I have a couple questions, what water source are you using to fill your containers during the hot and dry times and second, how can we buy one of your coffee cups
Hey Jeff, for some of your Canadian followers. Near Toronto area, when you talk about times of the rut stages in the states, what do you think Toronto and surrounding areas would be similar to state wise I.E new York.. thanks Jeff
Jeff, I’m so glad I’ve stumbled upon your channel. Thank you so much for all your great videos. I’m a bow hunter learning on my own through books and afield. I recently shot what would have been my first buck at about 4 yards broadside. I hit him high and was not able to recover. I realize now through videos I dropped my bow arm and did not bend at the hip. Any info or tips would be hugely appreciated. I’m hunting very small properties with low deer populations and don’t get to see many bucks at all.
Im a first generation bow hunter in NH, I have no one to teach me how to do things and have gone out almost every weekend. I've seen 3-6 deer but never had one come into 30 yards (my max range). I was wondering if you have or would make a video about targeting any deer not just a mature buck just to get meat in the freezer, and strategies for hunting big woods (white mountain national forest in my case). Thanks for reading, keep on keeping on!
I'm in NH also and I tought myself to bow hunt the biggest advice i can give you is dont give up NH is a hard state to hunt Jeff's books and videos have helped me so much good luck this season and just keep trying
I live in Missouri and the biggest thing I've learned with bow is, treestand and up 15'+ and cover scent. Also something my dad taught me, find the food source, bedding area, water source, and if fields are paths come together look there for signs.
Rut is just getting fired 🔥 up here in central North Carolina ! The pre rut starts prior to about November 15th and the rut peaks threw Thanksgiving and trickles out through January ! Juvenile delinquent bucks are chasing and harassing does now and the one mature target 🎯 🦌 buck I’ve bee hunting breeds & feeds in dark hours and is a recluse and very seldom daylights and he has had a single doe that seems to have came to him and his bedding area because she comes out feed alone and he hangs back until dark so he’s not pressuring her to stay so maybe he has his safe haven and the does know he’s a dominant mature buck and he doesn’t have to chase , he leaves no satellite scrapes or random rubs and he’s a old smart deer ! He never busts out when he’s spooked he quietly sneaks out like a ninja 🥷 and the does just bust out and he is definitely one of a kind and takes up a lot of space in my head …when doe family groups blow and snort at a buck and run and the young juvenile bucks keep chasing and harassing them does that mean they are all not receptive or just the lead nanny doe wants no part of the harassing young bucks ?
Question I have noticed after years of feeding corn during winter months to may a lot of woody browse is gone in a hundred yard circle near my feeders wood u not feed for a while and let browse regenerate
Doe go into estrus around November 3rd what you were correct on but they're only in estrus for 24 to 48 hours and then they're done until 30 days later they come in estrus again for 24 to 48 hours and then they're done and then one more time 30 days later they come in estrus for the last time for 24 to 48 hours and then they are done and at that point. The rut is officially over.
Thanks for all your vids. I'm hunting in upstate NY and the weather has significantly warmed and looks to stay warm for the remainder of November. How does this temperature change impact the post rut activity? TY
Upstate NY!! Hello from Upstate NY!! Finger Lakes region Bristol to be specific... our rut seemed to slow down after opening weekend, may be from sudden added pressure on Stid Hill multiple use area... NY has screwed up hunting dates and tags..
Guessing the warm temps after weeks well below freezing could have slowed them down too... hoping to see more activity as well.. supposed to be warm until Friday here then back to below 30 again, count on them to be moving when the cold front hits..
I'm in Jefferson county. The snow fall pushed them onto the food sources more for me but this warm up has helped them get on their feet a little earlier again.
I'm 62 years old and have yet to harvest a deer ever i go out but still no luck i hunt with black powder never had anyone help or show me what too do or were to set up i can't climb so i have to sit on the ground so if you can teach the ones that are young this sport then do it don't know if i will ever get one but i will keep trying even if it kills me
Terrible luck here. Have spent hundreds of hours in the bush this season. Saw one deer, and not even sure if it was a buck. 18 days left in bow-only season. Then it's shut until sep 1. 🤞🤞
Jeff, you say the peak rut begins the same time every year in a given location - I’m not doubting this, I’m just curious as to what methods of research/if there’s a thesis or something of the sort that I could read to support this claim? Thanks! Best of luck.
Hi John...just have to research it. Something I was taught by John Ozoga in person the end if the 90s. John is likely the most noted deer research biologist ever, and most quoted scientist for academic study. Huge amounts of research out there. Definately an undisputable fact tho...
Whitetail Habitat Solutions Jeff, his outlook does seem quite logical - and as the climate gets colder, the period of breeding opportunity is narrowed, and vise versa. It’s been shaped through many thousands of years of micro adaptation and I’m sure it’s true for most cervid species. Thanks. Also, I have 2 scrapes on my property that are perennial - they legitimately show up in the exact location without failure every year. How would I begin to hunt these?
John, here in the panhandle of West Virginia, at least on the mountain property we hunt, the rut really doesn't kick in until November 20th. Right around then lots of scrapes and rubs pop up and the last week of November there's a lot of chasing. Usually by November 28th or so, breeding is taking place and they are in lock down. What's nice is by the middle of December the muzzleloader season that runs for a week is phenomenal for the secondary rut. It amazes me how the rut takes place 2 weeks earlier where I live in western MD, just 30 miles northeast of our hunting ground in WV. I can't explain it...maybe difference in elevation, herd makeup, difference in browse...not sure. I do know that spring green-up is usually 2 weeks later where we hunt in WV than where I live just 30 miles away in MD, because of the elevation difference. My guess is that has a lot to do with the later rut where we hunt. Hope this helps.
R S I would think since you’re south of me (NEPA), you experience colder weather a bit later than me, but we actually saw temps of 15° around November 1st which is earlier than usual for here. I saw far more small bucks and mature bucks chasing more during late October than I did during any time in November, and here the peek rut is said to be around the first and second week of November, so I’m not sure. Lock down seems to have just ended now, as the bucks have returned to bachelor groups from what my game cameras have told me. I don’t believe elevation plays much of a role though, and food sources for deer are regularly changing. There could be something deeper and more psychological, somewhat analogous to an internal clock that triggers does to come into estrus given the climate and biome they’re in. But I’m graduating in May as an Environmental scientist, not a Neuroscientist, so it’s a bit out of my field! Haha. Thanks for the reply, best of luck.
Jeff, love your information-packed videos. I was wondering if you could do a video that focuses on whitetail breeding information. I have a lot of questions regarding this topic in terms of the biological aspect. Can a doe be bred more than once? Do bucks breed several does. Can a fawn be bred? I'm sure I can think many more questions, but hopefully these few will give you a little content to cover. Thanks!
Opener of NY was Saturday. Sat for 3 days of it now and have seen hardly any deer. Nothing mature to shoot doe or buck only yearlings. Spots that always produce are dry. Dont have a food plot or evening food source. Been a disappointing season so far.
Well, that makes sense to me. Explains why historically I've had the least luck this time of year though Dec. even seeing a deer. Almost like clockwork, the bow season ends here in NY and so does my chances of shooting a deer if I haven't already had a chance. 25 years hunting and still yet to shoot one with a rifle.
My Wife and I both have very nice bucks this year, letting our property rest, there is two very nice bucks left out there,we have a plan for December 6,7
Thanks for the information !!! And like watcking your videos ... you have paid a lot of attention to the deer you have and ive tried but i just dont have the time work/shower/eat/sleep/repeat well that the life of most people lol any way hands up you're good at this and i like to watch your videos they help on my vacation days hahahaha
If I’m hunting white oak woods how do I key in on what your calling “food sources?” Because the entire forest is a food source, right? I’m seriously asking... I don’t mean to sound like I’m being rude. By the way, I’m a WV & KY deer hunter.
Kick away the grass and leaves and dump a bag of water softener salt on the dirt. I guarantee those deer will be eating that dirt and digging it up for weeks. They will come back to that same spot
What do you do when you had record low temps before season opener. And all the does migrate. That's what happened where I am 5 cams all we have is bucks left not sure how long they will stick around
The cool thing is when the weather warms up and they stick around. I've seen the same doe family group migrate 3 times...big snow, melt, big snow, melt...they go back and forth like a yo-yo. Keeps the bucks around longer. Hope this warm front is hitting you guys right now too! They don't want to be in the deer yard. Instead they have to. So when it warms up they typically move back if there is a good melt. Hope that helps!
In Oklahoma the weather is crazy in 70s 1 day 30s next rut coming early here gun season on 23rd rut won't make it lucky for me I've got a couple already
for those asking, check your state biologist and even university studies on rut times. here in PA or this geographical area based on state biologist and penn state study over many years on road kill doe in spring, most doe go into their 48 estrus (peak rut) during the photoperiod of nov 15th. same time every year give or take a day. this goes for every state, it will always biologically be the same.
Elikz1 normally at the end of November rarely first week of December. I’ve noticed it depends on the weather, if it gets cold and stays cold for a couple days. I would get in the stand
If you want to see many deer, Utilize public gun hunters as pushers as deer will concentrate on security areas !! Maybe get back deep in public hunting areas But wind direction will focus deer into their preferred exit route for that specific wind direction !!
Think about it !! All of a sudden 40 pickups filled with orange clad people show up, Head lights blazing at a public hunting area !!! Every last Deer in that area is going to head for security areas !!! Dependent upon where they are Saturday Morning they will flee into the wind, if they can, but Flee no matter what !! It’s by far the most movement of deer at anytime during the hunting season !!!!!!
Michigan is the hardest state to hunt period. Everyone here was devastated,ok,pissed, tgat they banned baiting in the LP(aka Real Michigan). Gonna be a tough pist rut for sure.
I've been noticing that around the end of November early December I'll start to see a lot more bucks. I had 7 bucks all at the same time on the 7 acres with a lot of new growth. Why would they be grouped up like that?
Hi John! Thru info@whitetailhabitatsolutions.com...or thru my wrbsite, contact buttons. Diane handles all scheduling and she is working very hard right now....we have very set locations we are scheduled in thru August, and then 3 day fly-in trip pricing on top of that, to states that I do not normally travel to.
Hi Kyle not a dumb question at all! I actually never use scent but I always have a grunt call with me. I especially use a grunt call when a buck is out of range that I want to shoot ..
Thanks Jeff I have always used a grunt call but I have only dabbled with scents here and there but I haven’t seen any solid results out of either of them so I was just throwing it out there thank you again for all your help 🙏🦌👍
Definately the same time every year...but last 7-10 days of October for the Pre Rut, early to mid November for Peak rut and for sure in the downhill slide by the gun season opener. Look for the first 10 days of December to offer some sporadic but intense secondary rut.
The rut in Michigan is the same time every year. By the 11th or 12th of Nov .....75 percent of does are bred. You'll have to wait for late rut. This is why our gun season starts Nov. 15. To make sure our does are bred before we kill the.bucks.
I’m happy in west Michigan :) it’s been a hard session and I got two fat doe’ one in the morning one at night yesterday... tomorrow I’m gonna wait for the buck ..now that I got meat for the freezer
I believe this exclusively depends on what habitat you’re hunting. About 15’ is a safe bet as far as height, but if you’re hunting short stands of scrub oak/rhododendrons where you have no benefit of being high in a tree with a bow - a shorter stand shouldn’t corrupt your hunt. Plus the higher you are in a tree, the steeper and more difficult your angle of shot will be. Look at it this way, though this isn’t always possible, you’d like to be able to shoot the deer almost as soon as you see it, so unless you’re fully confident that you can call or coax a buck that’s 70-100 yards away from you in a laurel thicket, there’s no benefit to seeing long distances.
Hi John, mine are typically right around 20-21' high. I think you can get away with less height of there is a lot of cover and you are hunting passing deer...and you need much higher in an open hardwood, food plot treestand.
@@MrRdvs87 as someone who hunts the south, I've always read that rut is late and runs an extended period because of mild winter conditions that don't contribute to a high mortality rate in fawns. Up north a fawn born late doesn't bulk up enough to make it through the harsh conditions of winter. First deer I killed was in Minter, Alabama. 2007. He is on my wall. Mid January, bucks running does everywhere, great memories!
Hi Joe, I hunt afternoons here and there, but really focus on mornings during the rut and of course opening day of fun season. So for the majority of the season I hunt afternoons
I shot a good 9 point that I had on my list opening evening in New York. He had been coming to a cut cornfield regularly dogging doe but he was all alone looking to feed. It was almost like he was taking a break from women.
Robert Palmer I hunt the Catskills and in my area it’s always Halloween week. The peak rut is mid November. The secondary rut is last week of gun season. Hunt those scrapes and rub lines!
Yep. Weather patterns have been weird over the past few weeks. Teens in the early mornings / mid 60s low 70s in the afternoons. Moon phases should fall into line in the next two weeks.
usa2012 I love mine it’s never had a factory round shot through it. 100gr Nosler ballistic tips is what I load for it. 3,300fps. The 85gr BT I load to are running at 3,600fps. I’ve never had a deer step out of its tracks.
You have the most common sense advise on the Internet! My opinion and I am like everyone else entitled to my own opinion.. I just want to say Thanks!
I listened to you and harvested the biggest buck,,,thank you.
I’m watching this video while I’m making some deer jerky in the kitchen this mornin making the marinade now! 🦌
Man, now that sounds perfect...enjoy that jerky! That's a great morning right there 😉
Lol! Just put my deer jerky in the dehydrator before starting this video, southern Indiana
@@nateowings510 nice man! im waiting on my Cajun batch to get done now. snacking on the originals at the moment..lol
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yes sir!
I love post rut, cruising/strolling bucks out looking for one last doe!
Amen to that...one last fling!
I got my first buck this way. End of November and he was out looking for seconds
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Indeed, thanks again. :-)
Whitetail Habitat Solutions yes I love it!
Good luck Andrew!! Really hope you enjoy the hunt and get some meat 👍

That sounds great Kevin 👍 Good luck, hope you get one ☺️ thanks a lot for watching!
Shoot em dead!!!
I love your videos man keep it up it’s made me a much better hunter for sure!
i needed this info, I"m heading back to Wisconsin Thursday to bow hunt a couple days before the gun season.
Post rut is when I see more bucks by me and that's when I get my buck love the post rut better then open gun day
First time hunter here!
Thank you Jeff for another wonderful vid......God Bless
So I gathered it might not be a good idea to grunt to much? What do you think, Thursday is looking good nice temp drop
I only hunt in MN but going to my friends property in WI to hunt this coming weekend. Would you still stick to a little rattling/calling?
The property I hunt is around 90 acres with tons of cover and a few large hay fields then it’s bordered by a 200 acre property that’s probably 75% soybeans. Will it even be worth it to plant a spring/summer food plot since the beans are growing and i’m in northern New York so there is plenty of food. So then do i prioritize a winter food plot or don’t bother at all?
No need for the post rut hunt up here in MN, two nice deer this rifle season. Nice 8 pointer and nice doe.
Congrats Charlie!

Best advice is to learn to control your breathing. And either time your shots between breaths, on the exhale, or while hold your breath.
What time of day do you prefer to hunt during a full moon?..thanks pal..
Sounds awesome...good luck!!
Question I have noticed after years of feeding corn during winter months to may a lot of woody browse is gone in a hundred yard circle near my feeders wood u not feed for a while and let browse regenerate
I myself live over in NW Wisconsin. An I was wondering if you think it would still be a good idea to rattle or call for during gun season?
I'm 62 years old and have yet to harvest a deer ever i go out but still no luck i hunt with black powder never had anyone help or show me what too do or were to set up i can't climb so i have to sit on the ground so if you can teach the ones that are young this sport then do it don't know if i will ever get one but i will keep trying even if it kills me
The 2nd rut is I think 28 days later I may be wrong I watched that video of the muzzle loader hunt you had
By the way, another awesome video Jeff!!
Great video as always.
When do you think the secondary rut period is for Northern New York? First week of December?
BottleFlip Wither last week of gun season is always a good time to hit the scrape and rub lines as those bucks are looking for a doe.
Happens like that, I bought my bow in 09, this year in October got my 1st with it.
I'm still seeing great rut activity.. searching and chasing...
Seems second rut in Pa is end December and first week January. Does that sound right were there is descent number deer?
My Wife and I both have very nice bucks this year, letting our property rest, there is two very nice bucks left out there,we have a plan for December 6,7

Where should I be taking a stand right now I'm having a hard time pinpointing there routine (southern new Hampshire)
M H thanks! I’ll give that a try... I have never heard of that in my 25 yrs of hunting but ill sure give it a whirl. Thanks again👍🏼
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I'll keep you posted lol
In Oklahoma the weather is crazy in 70s 1 day 30s next rut coming early here gun season on 23rd rut won't make it lucky for me I've got a couple already
Jeff, do you notice the bucks chasing the yearling does more then the older does in the secondary rut?
Definately quite a few fawns. More of a mix for sure...
I just got home watched a bunch of turkeys all toms big ones. I’ll get them this spring
for those asking, check your state biologist and even university studies on rut times. here in PA or this geographical area based on state biologist and penn state study over many years on road kill doe in spring, most doe go into their 48 estrus (peak rut) during the photoperiod of nov 15th. same time every year give or take a day. this goes for every state, it will always biologically be the same.
I’m hunting southern Oklahoma, and when do you think peak of rut is here?
Elikz1 normally at the end of November rarely first week of December. I’ve noticed it depends on the weather, if it gets cold and stays cold for a couple days. I would get in the stand
You can judge rut activity by the number of dead deer on the road !!! How many new kills are you seeing ???
My friends and I haven't even seen chasing and hot does yet here in New Hampshire, I think it's just about to get good.
This is solid info. Thanks!
Thank you very much that is great to hear!
How do you manage to keep them watering hole full?
Michigan is the hardest state to hunt period.
Everyone here was devastated,ok,pissed, tgat they banned baiting in the LP(aka Real Michigan).
Gonna be a tough pist rut for sure.
Banned but so are alot of things.....

The rut has been on for about 3 weeks here in Saskatchewan
I’ll finally be back out this weekend after being overly busy the last couple weeks.
That's a good hunt...hope you can take some time to enjoy Jason and good luck!

Is the rut still in during the Ohio gun season. Dec 2 Tru the 10th
When is the secondary rut in Michigan 2019
Oh yeah I’m not done yet be safe and GOD BLESS you and your family Amen 🙏
I've been noticing that around the end of November early December I'll start to see a lot more bucks. I had 7 bucks all at the same time on the 7 acres with a lot of new growth. Why would they be grouped up like that?
The Young bucks at my place here in Michigan do the same every year
Was just curious on how to get ahold of you for some property management.
Nice mug!! I need one 👍
So Jeff ? Dumb question but is it a bad time in Michigan to use sent and grunt calls?
Hi Kyle not a dumb question at all! I actually never use scent but I always have a grunt call with me. I especially use a grunt call when a buck is out of range that I want to shoot ..
Thanks Jeff I have always used a grunt call but I have only dabbled with scents here and there but I haven’t seen any solid results out of either of them so I was just throwing it out there thank you again for all your help 🙏🦌👍
When do you believe the rut started this year 2019 in Michigan?
Definately the same time every year...but last 7-10 days of October for the Pre Rut, early to mid November for Peak rut and for sure in the downhill slide by the gun season opener. Look for the first 10 days of December to offer some sporadic but intense secondary rut.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 And that would be pushed back a week, for Central Missouri?
Does grouped back up by the 19th. Rut was over few days before.
How high should a stand be? Is there any height you wouldn’t be? Too low?
Situational
The rut is just getting started here
I really enjoy all your content. Have you ever put out any books?
Thank you Brandon! I actually have written 5 books and have a 6th one on the way. You can find them here...

Ok. Thank you. I’ll definitely look them up
@@brandonmilliner717 thanks Brandon and if you buy any, let me know what you think!
What about here in the south east? I’m in va and wondering when rut will be over . Or about when
That's a tough one for me personally Jeremy...but from what I hear from friends or clients, you still have a bit left!
Speaking of the south, why does AL’s rut run so late? Regular season runs from November to early February. I’m assuming that it’s a temperature thing.
What is your thought on south New Jersey rut timing was this year 2019 ?
Jeff, when do you hunt later in the day ? I noticed you love the mornings.
Hi Joe, I hunt afternoons here and there, but really focus on mornings during the rut and of course opening day of fun season. So for the majority of the season I hunt afternoons
What is your degree in? I am thinking of going back to school but I do have a bachelors in science....
What brand of hanger stands do u use?
What gun do you recommend I use for rut to knock down big bucks?
David Golliner the gun is the least important part of the equation. But buy a 30-06 and a 3-9x40 scope made by bushnell or vortex. You’re welcome.
I shot a good 9 point that I had on my list opening evening in New York. He had been coming to a cut cornfield regularly dogging doe but he was all alone looking to feed. It was almost like he was taking a break from women.
I'm new to hunting I'm just wondering if you would know when the rutt is in ny York state southern zone near Albany ny thank you for any help
It’s about the same dates that he talks about in the other states , listen to the video again
Robert Palmer I hunt the Catskills and in my area it’s always Halloween week. The peak rut is mid November. The secondary rut is last week of gun season. Hunt those scrapes and rub lines!
Have you ever hunted south anywhere around west ky
Great videos. New subscriber here. Thanks!
We’re still pre/rut down here in MS.
I bet! Definately not a north 1/2 of the country state 👍
Yep. Weather patterns have been weird over the past few weeks. Teens in the early mornings / mid 60s low 70s in the afternoons. Moon phases should fall into line in the next two weeks.
Have you ever done a rifle and ammo video?
I have not...will do one for ML tho, coming up!
Around Dec. 14 here in MS. Get in the woods
Our rifle season opens here this comin Saturday to. I’ll break out my 25-06 I guess.
Good caliber, my dad nailed an 11 pt last year with a 100 gr. Core-lokt
usa2012 I love mine it’s never had a factory round shot through it. 100gr Nosler ballistic tips is what I load for it. 3,300fps. The 85gr BT I load to are running at 3,600fps. I’ve never had a deer step out of its tracks.
@1:21 what is that on that bucks neck?
