How To Hunt The Second RUT

  • The second rut is in my experience the most missed opportunity during the entire deer hunting season, let alone during the entire annual rut. Hunting the secondary rut first takes understanding when exactly it begins. During the primary rut a portion of does are not bred. This is often the case when the bulk of the doe herd enters estrus, leaving some of the does without a buck. Also, well developed fawn does are often bred during the second rut. Here is when the secondary rut will begin in your area, where you should hunt the second rut, and what time of the day will be the best match for your favorite rut stand.

Happy Thanksgiving Jeff. I have a question for u. The past week and half it's been dead in the woods. Barley even getting anything on the trailcams. I would usually have 8 big bucks a day and countless does everyday on my trailcams. But now it's dead. Im fortunate enough to hunt 500 acres of private land with no pressure at the Oakland/Lapeer county border. What do u think has happened. I'm planning on hitting it hard this week again. I've never encountered this lack of activity on this property before. Thanks for all your tips.

I had a doe and fawn come out in the food plot on Tuesday Nov. 26 around 7:30am which was a cold , frosty morning with no wind. I didn’t use any doe in estrous urine since the peak rut is over. I still didn’t fill my buck tag. I only used my grunt call once that morning around 7:15am. I was taking pictures with my iPhone when a buck came running from the corner grunting as it entered the field. I dropped my iPhone and picked up my rifle and followed it waiting for the perfect shot. The first time I used the Model 70 Featherweight .270 Winchester loaded with Remington 130 grain Core Lokt . It was a solid hit watched it run in the woods hearing it crashing. Now I have venison for Thanksgiving!
Opening Day Pennsylvania is Saturday, I am blessed to have two opening day hunts this year!

In Dec., 2016, I had my very best encounter but my buck tags were filled.I was sitting at the bottom of a creek,on a rock for about 30 min.I was looking down the Creek then turned my head a little left and walking along side the Creek on the 5 ft.bluff was an awesome mature buck, amazingly,he never noticed me! I took my phone out as he past me and filmed him walking about 20 yards, crossing the river heading in my direction. He turned ,went up the trail on the bluff and into the woods. The footage looks much farther away than it actually was.

We just entered the primary breeding rut in Nova Scotia - saw a buck with mouth open lip curl chase a doe across my food plot this morning - crazy chasing - also our weather is just starting to cooperate and we got some good cold snaps coming up - we only have 2.5 weeks left of our season and the last week is a non traditional week (archery and muzzleloader) but I feel these are the best weeks - most guys are tagged out already - happy hunting !!!

Thanks, it's always good to listen to your knowledge. I like the last 10-15 days of deer season (December1-15) a lot. One reason is you see a lot less hunters in the woods. This time of year can be pretty crazy. I remember one year that I got between two bucks and a hot doe. This is a long story to type but believe me when I tell you one buck was really pist, actually a pretty scary situation when all you have is a bow and your on the ground. This time of year can get your heart pumping like know other. Thanks again.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours Jeff. Enjoyed the video as always. Here in Kansas we are just coming into the post rut. This is the time when I usually bag my critter as I have stands and blinds in those areas between feeding areas and bedding areas. These stands and blinds are also great for cruising bucks for the secondary rut. I have spent most of the season thus far just watching and evaluating as my land is more or less a pass through area. I have no place to put in a food plot that wouldn’t be disturbed by accessing a stand or blind....on 160 acres. And there is no need for a food plot because of the surrounding ag and the multitude of CRP. I do, however, mow small sections of the CRP and Pasturelands and I do have multiple bedding areas. Enjoy all the videos.

Jeff, thank you for putting such great informational videos on deer and deer hunting out there to the masses. I just read a blog from a well respected hunter in the whitetail woods stating that the secondary rut is a fallacy. Mainly because a buck's nose is so strong, any estrous doe would be winded and tracked down and bred during the primary rut. I'm going to take your advice in hopes that I can still fill my buck tag this season. Thanks again for the great content!

I hunt for food not horns, but I noticed around me hard rut was November 14th, in St.Clair county Michigan. THAT DAY the bucks where breeding does in the middle of the field. The 16th I killed a heavy 6 point, 3 doe in heat calls, 45 minutes of sitting, and he come in to my 25 yard mark. There was 4 bucks in the same 40 acre field, cared not about each other, just the does around them.

I killed a monster 8 pointer here in MI. Field right behind my house during Oct was full of big and small bucks chasing does. Then nothing. But then, on 12/1/19. Massive bodied 8 point chasing a mature doe. Came across the field right on top of the doe. With that normal posture, head forward, smelling at her rear. He was a class 180 heavy mass 8 point with a 21" inside spread and tall tines. Here in Lenawee, county. Near MI, motor Speedway.

And a happy happy to you, thank god ya’ll get to experience a 2nd rut, unfortunately I live in money hungry gritty Tennessee and “ in CWD counties” and twra are clueless on how to handle it they think money and kill all bucks anyway that’s my rant...but no we close to early cause in south west tenn were just now in our chase phase for just to right to the 1st if December then we hit lock down and yea we close 1st of January then they have a stupid doe week that you can only kill doe,and about 80% the hunters are tired or have all there freezer meat and of course here we have late born fawn so yes there is some yearling doe still running around but “some of the weekend warriors couldn’t tell the difference in a 1.5 yo and 2.5 yo die so they shoot the doe that’s been bread not realizing there possibly shooting there next buck. But some of us travel north,I love Ohio Ky,by the way we live in a unit we’re you can kill 3 doe a day on private lands. I preach you teach, good work.

Transitioning to bow hunting was a huge learning curve for me and I certainly had some failures before I was able to have success. I got my first deer with a bow and engaged all in one week. Overall it was a great season. Thanks again!

I love your content and you always do a great job. Unfortunately, I can’t do most of these techniques because I live on twenty acres in west Texas, where we raise sheep and a couple of steers. So I only get to have one stand to hunt all year.

I love to hear that J 😊 Personally never been a fan of sitting with the boys drinking beer and staring at each other for days on end. Diane has been by far my best hunting buddy ever. It's one thing of your spouse/significant other doesn't want to hunt but man if they WANT to hunt and a hunter doesn't want to include them in every way? Shame on them...

My dad and I just bought a small 40 acre parcel in eastern Kansas. We hung three stands up and have been hunting pretty hard this year. We have seen some really nice bucks on camera but it has been difficult to get them out during the day. Only a few times have we seen the nice ones out during the day on camera. I know you talked about not pressuring stands and how you don’t even hunt specific stands until certain times of the year but I was wondering how not to put too much pressure on the deer when that’s the only land you have to hunt. Should we just hunt less? Could you maybe make a video on how to hunt small parcels without putting too much pressure on the deer.

From watching the videos here and my own experiences I've learned that one way to keep pressure low is to get into your stand/blind/etc as quietly as possible , with the wind working for you and some visual cover getting into your spot. It sounds simple but I set much of that up during the off season, cutting access paths, cleaning up noise makers, and stacking side screens to block my movement to and from. I also determine my best wind for making that happen and do not break that rule. If the wind is wrong I hunt another spot that does line up with wind, cover and stealth.

For one, I would put up several more stands on 40 ac. Hunting the same stand over and over is a sure way to put a lot of pressure on your land. Jeff talks a lot about having food sources, water holes, and mock scrapes that are relatable, meaning you have water holes and/or mock scrapes that are between bedding and food or between 2 food sources. You could have a blind/stand at each food source, scrape, or water hole. That's a lot of stand opportunities. He also has extensive content on hunting using the weather. I have followed his methods on that and making sure the wind is right for every spot I sit and I have seen a lot this year. Just spend some time watching all of his videos and you'll get an idea on how to hunt a small parcel. That's what his channel is all about!

Here's a bit of info from me and my dads hunt. We hunt in northern Arizona. Coues. We hunted in late October so i believe its after the main rut.
Ok my dad got a decent 2x2. I got my 1st he was an older more mature 3x4.
My dads 2x2 was actually following a doe, he was using her as recon like the younger ones will do. Bad decision because she came within 15feet of our ground blind.
Anyway while gutting the younger one i noticed he had hardly any food or poop in his guts.
But while gutting the older one I noticed he was full of food both ends to, lol.

What's funny about where I hunt (Eastern Long Island) there are so many does that the big guys don't chase hard in early November. It seems they work a little harder when it's late November early December.

I talk about browse a lot in my videos...in my public land and bedding area playlists. Way better than hunting in a mature woods. Mature hardwoods are some of the worst locations to hunt deer. You can hunt clear-cuts on public land almost like a corn field.

Question: I’m hunting public land mountains in Virginia. Would you focus on terrain features to catch a cruising buck in the secondary rut or focus on food, whether it be acorns they haven’t cleaned up yet or 5-10 year old clear cuts?

Hey Jeff thanks for the information. Always enjoy your videos. I have a buck on private property that I have not seen in 2 weeks after I spooked him walking into the stand . He shows up on trail cam late nights. Fresh scrapes just not seeing him hunting anymore. Will grunting post rut help out? Perhaps my food source is too pressured?
