    If you want to keep gar on your line, unravel about a foot of nylon rope, and replace the hook with the strands of nylon rope. When the gar strikes it rolls wrapping the rope around its mouth. Works like a charm.

    Have you guys tried using circle hooks with bait? You will want a rod with a relatively limber top section and some backbone in the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of the rod. Just leave the rod in a rod holder with a few feet of slack line and the drag set at only a few pounds.
    The fish will engulf the bait and begin moving off. Once it feels the hook it will take off and start the hook point; usually in the corner of the mouth. Then just tighten the drag and lean back on the rod (no "hookset"), to get the hook past the barb. Fight the fish the rest of the way in as normal. I know it works for carp; you can give them six feet of slack to play with and they still get hooked right in the mouth.

    • @TyPigPatrol
      @TyPigPatrol  Год назад

      Yeah, sometimes that works in most cases they just don’t grab the whole bait.
      But you are right that’s a safe way to catch them. Thanks for watching!

    When I lived in Florida I would fish for gar and bass when it was too windy to salt water fish. Gar are total bitch about hitting any artificial. Where I fish there was too much bait and they just don't, trust me I've thrown 1,000,000 things out there 1,000,000 times. They actually spook and swim away from most of them. But I did find 1 awesome trick that you should try. I throw a zera spook out and just let it sit. The gar will come up to take a peak at it and actually bump it with their nose a lot of times. As soon as they start to turn away from it, rip it. Just a quick snap like you use to walk the dog. But maybe a little exaggerated. It takes patience and nerves when a big gar comes up and will literally bump It with his nose. It makes you wanna just move the lure right then,bbut it just does not work the same way. You gotta be patient and let the fish turn a little speck, The fish needs to take his eyes off the lure for a split second. Don't let him get more than 6" away from your lure. You're not letting the fish turn around or swim away. You just want him to take his eyes off the bait for a second. They will turn and crush it every time. A lot of times they swim towards it and turn away before they get to it. You get the lower the same little snap just once. They will turn and head towards the bait again. Again this works when you can see the gar, but lucky For fisherman gar love to sit and sun themselves. If it's Marty and you can't see them you can check it out and look for their weeks or check it out and just give it a random twitch every once in a while, but that method you just getting lucky with your timing, the other way its automatic you find them and you have a lockdown method that never fails. The only other artificial I've gotten gar on ar paddle tail swim baits with the weighted belly. 6"Storm Mullet That are sold for red fish and snook. What's a spook away from the bait 9 out of 10 times and when they do hit it they normally just rip the beaten half Without you getting a hook set. I hope this helps somebody I tried to be a detailed and thorough as I can That people understand what I'm trying to explain... Good luck and tight lines guys.

      I got one for $24 at a bait and tackle in Tennessee. Recommend heavy baitcast tackle . Spinning gear will rip your index finger apart in no time when repeated casting this beastly lure

    Have had big northern pike t bone 18 inch walleye. So 12 inch baits are not to big. They have 16 inch baits for muskie.

    when I was a kid I lived in Missouri right on the Mississippi. We hated these fish. They would come in with the Spring floods into our lakes and creeks. They destroyed the bass and crappie populations. I live in Oregon now and I am glad I will never see another "Billygar".

    I have the same bait and its murder on the finger if u use a spinning reel when casting. Need to get a thimble for finger protection. Much better to throw this savage gear monster on bait casting gear. Big Stripers love this. What dam? Cherokee?
