It's gotten to the point that I find it jarring whenever I hear the actual official JP and EN voice actors and feel that it would be cool if we got an abridgers version.
I’m used to the JP actors myself since I originally watched dragon ball in Japanese but whenever I try and hear them in English voices, it’s the TFS voices.

I still love how literally when Nail says "Did anyone else notice a massive tone shift?" The show literally becomes more dramatic and more heartfelt for the rest of the series. I always find that matchup hilarious
Which is a little ironic because there was a MASSIVE tone shift when Piccolo shows up in the original dragonball. He killed the eternal dragon which was pretty much the only time it ever felt like dying mattered.
Someone had said that at this point the show stopped being an parody and a hilarious redubbing of the show

It's just with mel brooks popularizing the genre and later the "____ movie"s ruining the genre people just conflate parody and comedy.
Kinda like comedy itself. The actual meaning of comedy is just a story that follows karma. Bad people get a comeuppance and the good guys get rewarded.
Like Dante's "Divine Comedy" has nothing to do with jokes.

The "Kami House vs Kame House" scene hits me so funny because of the chipper candor of Krillin starting in on that explanation. Cutting away from it without finishing gives an impression that it carries on far longer than it has any pertinence to.

By the time they started doing those, Ben (the voice of nail) had left the team, so it would've probably been awkward. In one of the shorts they did, they have piccolo talking to them, but cut out their voices, probably because they couldn't get Ben to reprise the role.

Regardless he lended his talents well to the series, and for me was an entertaining member in their occasional side stuff, but yeah it's also why his characters that returned in HFIL (Mez and King Cold) were recasted.

I love how the "like a bitch" line keeps getting reapplied to Vegeta throughout DBZA. First Frieza, then 18 when she breaks the other arm and then Perfect Cell when he's recapping the plot to the reporter.

Funny thing about the "All these squares make a circle" bit: One of the English translators/devs of Final Fantasy XIV is a fan and used this line in a description for a housing item. The 'Brick Garden Circle' was introduced several years back and when I first saw the item description, I laughed my ass off.
Oh! I never heard it as 17 being a natural blonde. I always thought it meant that at one time he bleached his hair. Like a reference to a really cringy moment when they were younger. THIS is why I watch commentary.

I love seeing the dynamic here. Back when these were coming out I always wondered what made the secret sauce come together... It seems TFS really had a magic dynamic of mutual respect for each other's talents even though every is very different in their approach. I love listening to Taka give his take after Lanni and KN and what he focuses on... He gets super excited when he remembers writing a joke while KN gets excited about something he learned or was able to figure out. Lanni gets stoked about the performance aspect and getting to do something challenging with his voice.... The passion on display is so fun and inspiring!

I think his outing as Yamcha in tree of might was where he really began to shine, it makes me wonder if he would’ve pulled a Taka and really grew into his own too if he just stuck around.
A lot of people treat va’s like they’re talent exist in a vacuum, when in reality the more time you give for them to grow into their role and the better the scripts and directors are, the better they’ll sound.
A lot of his best work always seemed to be right when he was a foot out the door

Namekians don't have hair, so I'd imagine they wouldn't normally reference themselves as being bald. Others might say they're bald, but self referentially, I don't think Namekians would, especially a Native Namekian like Nail who has little exposure to the concept of hair or lack there of.
Yeah I was thinking of that too tbh. He might know that most humans have hair with Krillin and Tien being outliers which would explain why he called them bald.
At most Namekians can apparently have head fins but that's prob a more mutation than something standard

I love how Kaiser and Lani are able to be confrontational while working together. Its really shows that they work great because they are able to express criticism and doubts with things. Kudos to them

Ok fun story. Recently I was at work and this customer comes up looking for a particular cheese and I recognized it right away because it came in a square pack (or at least it used to). Couldn't find it so I go to my coworker and she finds it and the reason I couldn't find it is they changed the packaging INTO A CIRCLE. So I go "No wonder I couldn't find it, all those squares made a circle". And the customer made such an audible laugh I knew he got the reference.

"Nah nah Kame house is the place with the turtle" is an iconic line. Its a line for the fans, meta commentary on a universal experience we all have had as fans once.
Honestly, season 3 taking the darker and more bad-ass tones really added weight, so that the season's comedy was contrasted - which made it funnier to me.
It's come up here with "I wore it better" but a recurring thing through the series that isn't a joke at his expense but jokes 17 makes about himself is how comfortably metro he is. In a show where every guy is stacked to the brim with muscle and manliness, 17 is absolutely secure in his masculinity to the point of shopping at a woman's clothing store to see if there's something he'd like in Episode of Trunks. It's one of my favourite things about him and I'm a huge fan of both it and the fact that I don't think anyone in the entire series ever insults him for it.

Well Vegeta and 18 both insult him for it...

I do love how they wrote 17 like that. He is the epitome of a guy who does things for no other reason than the sheer enjoyment of it. Why does he dye his hair? Because he likes the way it looks. Why does hunt Goku down in a truck instead of just flying? Because driving is fun. Why did he become a park ranger? Because he enjoys camping in the great outdoors.
You get the vibe that nothing he says is for anyone else's benefit, and he's completely earnest about everything he does.

Hey guys. I dropped this on one of Taka's commentaries but I wanted to mention it to y'all too:
Thank you guys so much for everything you've done over the time you've been making these shows. The past decade has been hell for me; multiple failed relationships with unfaithful partners, addiction issues and mountains of anxiety and self esteem and depression issues. I am a mess on the best of days and it's taken me years to get myself sorted out. I was in a lot of really dark places for awhile.
But no matter how dark it was, you guys were always there. If I was ever sad, lonely, depressed, anxious, I could put on your videos and they would cheer me up almost instantly. I'm going through some horrible stomach problems right now but I've been watching Namekimania on repeat. Y'all have been there for me over and over again at some of the most brutally dark places in my life. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart, for creating all that you've made: DBZ:A, Helsing Ultimate Abridged, HFIL, etc. All of you are so absolutely amazingly funny and talented people, and the works you've created have had a lasting impact on who I am as a person, for better or worse.

Honestly, i love the extended times that these videos have, and the constant pauses when they break down their writing and reasons for the scenes. Just gives some great insight with their creative differences.

What I've found amusing lately is that people have been using Lani's Vegeta scream in memes and I can't help but point it out every time! It's like a new Wilhelm scream to me.
I like the idea that most of Lani’s recording sessions involve him standing in a booth having a conversation with himself like a madman
And weirdly enough, Piccolo is the only one he consistently doesn’t talk to himself
Only some of the best voice actors do this. And it's cool every time.
Like Scott McNeil during Beast Wars. Some scenes had only 3 characters interacting and all 3 were voiced by him

That whole conversation during the outro shows how well you guys actually work together, because it must be a common pitfall for any project where there is a team of head writers but one overall director/editor. Having that respect and teamwork to let the director have final say on something even if one of the other writers has a different opinion is so important and is probably one of the most significant 'soft' factors in why DBZA has been as successful as it has.
I adored that section what cool insight to this part of the creative process.
I acknowledge that you guys made a more conscious effort to have some dramatic and serious scenes in this season, but Frieza's "Suicide is the coward's way out" line goes so hard
"It does WHAT" has honestly always been hilarious, but there being an actual innocent backstory made it even better

I actually remember back in the day when people thought you guys meant that 17 and 18 were implying “black people are dead.” It was so ridiculous considering the obvious joke was that “their parents are dead.”

I LOVE that delivery of "jealous". He sounds like a sassy gay friend.
I always thought they absolutely nailed the comedy in season 2, but in season 3 they nailed the feel.
Also, their chairs look comfy af.
Looked at the timeline and thought "wait are they just going to talk for like the last 10 minutes?" But honestly it was one of the best outros so far. It could have been an hour long and I would've enjoyed every second of it.
Something I've always loved about Toryiamas's writing style is how, while he doesn't plan things out like Oda, he is able to pull back from his older stuff without it seeming like repeating himself or nostalgia bait like with the Red Ribbon army kind of becoming the main villains in this saga again.
The only issue is how often he forgets characters, powers, or plot points.
Toriyama really is something special. While he definitely put thought into some things, he wrote by the seat of his pants so often and ended up creating one of the most influential and important manga of all time. He just had greatness oozing out of him to such a degree that once he oput pen to paper, magic happened "effortlessly" (obv mangaka work ridiculously hard, I mean purely in how he wasn't spinning some grand tale from day 1 and never had a clue how it was gonna end or how he'd even reach the end).
Truly one of the greats. And its such an easy read to. The panels flow effortlessly to one another. And despite what the anime makes you believe, it was pretty well paced too. The story and characters arent perfect, but the execution of what he decided to work with was basically flawless.

Your guys' comedic writing was always amazing and continued to do nothing by improve, but my favorite moments have been and always will be when you were writing for serious/sincere/heartfelt moments because those moments are like magic. Not a day goes by while writing my own scripts where I don't think about the "dead men behind me" line or Vegeta's apology to Gohan.

Krillin and 18 was always, for me personally, the couple I had a tough time believing they were married but thankfully it's something that I'm happy Super has given us more moments between 18 and Krillin that I'm more on board with it than ever before.
It mostly comes down to Toriyama not beign very good at writing romantic stuff (he's said so himself apeartently)
Well they certainly make more sense than Bulma and Vegeta, within canon at least.
@@TheHollowTiger I disagree on that. Bulma and Vegeta almost make perfect sense. They’re a literal power couple. A Super Genius and a Super Sayain. The brains and the brawn. True symmetry. Vegeta likely sees Bulma as the most powerful woman on the planet, the smartest being in the universe and his better in many important respects. And I imagine that Bulma sees him as the only man in the universe strong enough in all the right ways to match her as a person. They are both strong willed, independent, driven, dominant minded individuals. Modern beliefs would suggest that their personalities shouldn’t work well together but they do because they both balance being dominant and submissive with each other simultaneously and perpetually.
Like… notice how they talk to each other, how Vegeta always softens his voice when he speaks to her directly and is slow to refuse her. How she ignores his edgy antics with a blissful smile and only responds to what she wants to with the loving patience of a woman who knows exactly who tf she married. Vegeta always takes a protective/supportive stance behind Bulma when she’s in the scene and knowing him I feel like that’s for him more than for her sake. He’s probably the most comfortable when he’s closest to her. And I’d imagine knowing that would make Bulma feel really good about herself😊. No, seriously though. *Bulgeta* are beautiful together.
The most unbelievable relationship in Dragon Ball is Goku and Chi-Chi, honestly. He’s been her obsession since she was 12 years old, and Goku barely comprehends the concept of romantic love because honestly, if we’re all honest with ourselves, Chi-Chi SAed Goku. The man didn’t even know what kissing was as a fucking GRANDFATHER like him and Chi-Chi never kissed? But have two kids? But never kissed? That’s not fucking normal, people. Like… Goku didn’t know shit about shit for shit Chi-Chi was the only person he’d ever been with romantically. She definitely had to teach him everything about sex and intimacy, except minus the intimacy, apparently. But if memory serves Chi-Chi was literally tutored on how to be a wife by a older woman in the woods before her and Goku got married. And seeing as how Goku is the only man Chi-Chi has ever been with romantically, this woman definitely had to have taught her how to do the deal with Goku.
But I say it’s SA because of her level of obsession with Goku and the fact that he probably didn’t understand what was happening enough to consent to it and Chi-Chi without any etiquette or reservations likely ripped his clothes off and took his goods before the Sayain could ask a question.

Tbh a lot of what makes the relationship work for us was all steps taken by the actors, script writers, artists etc that tried to give us numerous scenes and interpretations of a relationship that was pretty sparse in the manga. A lot of it was supplementary material either made with hindsight or simply trying to expand upon something so that it organically works in the story because tori didn’t account for it.
They’re literally barely ever onscreen together in the og manga.
I wish I knew Japanese but due to Bulma and yamchas va’s being upset and shocked about the sudden turn, she straight up admitted that she began to voice Bulma as something of a young woman who doesn’t quite understand what she was getting into with vegeta
Art imitates life in the sense that it took awhile for the change to grow on her in the same way it did for Bulma in the story, and I’m sure subtle nuances like that in her tone really helped thread that needle.
It’s easy to look back and see it now, but back when the manga was all we had? Yeah, I don’t think there’d be as much to say

If you still have something to say about that though the Cell Games or Time Chamber Training would also be a good place to potentially go into that point.
I think Kaiser mentioned that he regrets doubling down on the "Goku is a bad father" meme during Namek arc, but they'll probably go out into more detail once they reach the Cell arc.

I was waiting for this ep specifically to hear how Lani pulled off the best _OOOH NOOO_ I'd ever heard in a show, but then he pulled it off again just without hesitation as the scene played so I guess it doesn't really need to be discussed.
