Since my car was built towards the end of 2006 it's almost 14 years now and I guess the LED''s in the tail lights just gave up!
So I set out to fix them, not replace them FIX them!
Since I couldn't find any information online about how to actually fix them I decided to cut them open and see what was inside.
Not knowing a great deal about LED''s and exactly how they work, I thought I'd go to the local electronics store Jaycar, now the guy at Jaycar knew exactly how the LED's worked and explained it to me and it was very simple to fix in the end and only cost about $5aud maybe even less.
I hope this video can held a lot more people to fix their taillights themselves or any other LED lights that might not be working properly anymore.
Thanks for watching!! - Авто/Мото
Pretty awesome video, don't have an e92 myself but I just finished building headlights for my e90 and wanted to do something with my tails. Gave me sort of an insight into how bmw did the LED tubes in the tail lights
That's cool, thanks for letting me know! I hope your headlights came up sikk!!
If the outer tail lights aren’t working, it’s worth checking that the module is pushed in properly. So it’s not always blown leds
Yeah and that’s why I tested them on the bench too!
You bloody legend! Cheers mate will give it a go over the weekend
Haha thanks heaps for that ay, I hope it works out for you too! 😁
Nice lights gone on my car and this looks like it's gonna be worth a go 🙌🏽💯👍🏽
Yeah man, thank you, that’s a pretty easy fix luckily! I was glad I gave it a go and found a guy who was very helpful at Jaycar (the electrical store).
I just bought my 335i. Entire time I thought it was a brake bulb that needed to be replaced. Turned out it’s the entire tail lights. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ man bmw have found a way to make money every aspect of the car
Oh damn, I hope you can find a good used one somewhere and replace it fairly easily and without spending to much money!
I fixed this on my BMW 2008 Cab. E93.
The housing on E93 is slightly different and thicker, but the print inside is the same, so from this video I could estmate the placement just fine.
I too cut the cobberlanes on the printboard and only used the board as a holder for the LED's.
You do not need 3mm LEDs, 5mm is very fine too.
At first I bought the 1500MCD, but they are NOT bright enough. Is HAS to be the 6800MCD, and if these are not available go UP in brightness, MCD6900 or MCD7000 even.
The metalfilm resister at 110ohm can be at a higher watt, I used a 2W, it was very fine.
I hope this additional info can help somebody else. Good luck with your project!
In the taillight the BLUE wire is the positive. On the LEDs the LONG leg is the positive.
Thanks for adding all that extra information, I was just going off what I was told at JayCar, more than that, I didn’t really know what I was doing haha!
Did you use standard 5mm diodes? You know, those arround 2 volts and 20mA?
LED: Red, 5mm, round top, 2.1V, 20mA, 30 angle, height 8.91mm, no "standoff" on the legs.
@@b4ph0m3tdk9 thank you so much
thank you!!!!!!
Much appreciated! Thank you too 😃
excellent Five Star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you very much 🤩 I really appreciate it!!!
Thank you my friend, my x5 2021 car, the rear light on the fender and the rear light on the trunk are out of the circuit and sometimes it turns on, and most of the time, the reason , the water leaking from the small wall is a break, do I have to open the inside of the light , or is the problem, for example, the external fuse I have, please advise
I’m not sure about that because I don’t know much about that car but if it’s from 2021 shouldn’t it still be under warranty?
Thanks mate, you gave my courage to try to do this myself. But we do not have any JarCar in Denmark. So got to get the LEDs from somewhere else.
Ohh cool, thank you too, that’s good to hear!
Yeah JayCar is probably just here in Australia but glad you found somewhere else!
I fixed this on my BMW 2008 Cab. E93. See the full description with additional info in a new commet I made.
I ended up buying my LEDs at firm called *digikey* they have offices all over the world.
mine also shut down the lights.. thanks now i know how and what to open.. wish me luck..
in few days i will try my luck😅
Thanks heaps buddy, good luck, I hope you’ve got it working again properly by now!
thank you great video
I’m very glad you think so, thank you buddy!
Can you please provide a link where to buy the leds and resistors? If i understand correctly you unsoldered the leds and resistor and reused the pcb?
I got them from a shop called Jaycar here on the Gold Coast in Australia, I think they are something like 3mm Ultra Bright Red 6000 mcd LED Light, but I’m not exactly sure.
Yeah that’s what I did, just used the circuit board to hold the new LED’s.
Am horrible with directions you are killing me 😂
Oh sorry about that, I hope you’re okay 👍🏼
The LED do not need to be 3mm, 5mm is very fine too.
I bought 6800MCD, if they are not available go UP in brightness 6900MCD or 7000MCD even.
makes you wonder how many people would get this fault out of warranty & probably paid at least $500 at the dealer for a genhine BMW tail light!
Yeah I hear ya, when I tried to search how to fix it all I could fix was how to replace it not fix it!
Years later here, so add the resistor on the positive side, wire positives in series then negatives in series and that bypasses the board?
I think so, I was going off what I was told by the guy at Jaycar!
It’s still working years later too!
I’m gonna give it a go!
Sounds good! I hope it works for you too!
In the taillight the BLUE wire is the positive. On the LEDs the LONG led is the positive.
Don’t hit the light. All right good job. Let’s hope it don’t rain .
It's all good, thanks bro, I pressure washed it and she's sweet!
so what power and size excatly leds you purchased ? answer would help me alotttt ! tnx!
Thank you, I’ll see what I can do, I think they’re like 3mm Ultra bright red 6000 mcd LED’s or something like that.
I hope that helps!
The LED do not need to be 3mm, 5mm is very fine too.
I bought 6800MCD, if they are not available go UP in brightness 6900MCD or 7000MCD even.
Thanks for that, I’m certainly not an expert on this so it’s always nice to learn more!
awesome work! do you know if the E81 would be the same procedure? tia
Thanks buddy! I’m not exactly sure but I’d say it’s quite similar as long as the led lines in the tail light look about the same, not the LCI ones, you should be able to look in from the outside and see the leds at one end of the light!
I would love to know exactly what you bought cuz I don't know anything from this video what parts to get
I pretty much just brought what the guy at Jaycar sold me when I told him my problem. I think they are something like 3mm Ultra Bright Red 6000 mcd LED Light, but I’m not exactly sure.
And some sort of resistor! I’m no expert on that stuff though.
The LED do not need to be 3mm, 5mm is very fine too.
I bought 6800MCD, if they are not available go UP in brightness 6900MCD or 7000MCD even.
Hi where did you solder the fuse? Leds I can see
I didn’t solder in a fuse, just the LED’s and a resistor!
I’m in need of the leds myself I can’t find them anywhere
They were from Jaycar ‘Red 3mm LED 1500mcd Round Clear’ I think that was them! And a 110 ohm resistor!
The LED do not need to be 3mm, 5mm is very fine too.
I bought 6800MCD, if they are not available go UP in brightness 6900MCD or 7000MCD even.
Definitely NOT the 1500MCD!!!
Hi. Thanks for sharing. Did you change the leds? Or just added the resistor?
No problem, Thank you! I did use new LED's too
@@ScubaMade hey
Wich LED‘s you used ?
I got them from a shop called Jaycar here on the Gold Coast in Australia, I think they are something like 3mm Ultra Bright Red 6000 mcd LED Light, but I’m not exactly sure.
I put the new LED’s in and a resistor and got rid of all the stuff that was already there, I just used the circuit board to hold the LED’s.
Does this work on the inner tail lights too?
what size Led lights did you use, was they clear or red
I can’t quite remember what size, pretty small, just a few millimeters, and they were red!
The LED do not need to be 3mm, 5mm is very fine too.
Dali neko zna koje su jacine te 3 diode
Unfortunately I don’t know exactly, sorry!
I did the same thing but it lights are not bright enough
Ok, you might need some sort of brighter LED’s maybe, sorry I don’t know to much about all that, the guy at Jaycar helped me find the right stuff!
Yes, the 1500MCD and the 6000MCD mentioned is NOT bright enough.
I bought 6800MCD, if they are not available go UP in brightness 6900MCD or 7000MCD even.
Nice vid! please tell me did you have to remove the original stuff from the board ?
Thanks buddy! It was awhile ago now but I did have to take the LED’s out and put new ones in and I’m pretty sure I left the other stuff in there but I didn’t use any of it!
Just cut the cobberlanes on the printboard, then the bord can be reused as a LED holder for your new LEDs.
Can you show us which wire connect to where?
I did that awhile ago, 1 wire is positive and 1 is negative, it was pretty simple I think.
Brown=common and blue=positive
Thank you 😊
In BMW lights the BLUE wire is positive.
On the LEDs the LONG leg is the positive.
Same problem on my car now but don't know anything about electrical
I hope you can find someone to fix it or try having a go at it yourself, it has happened on my 325i and my 335i e92’s so I’d say it’s pretty common unfortunately.
@@ScubaMade is it possible to give me the materials you bought to fix it in jaycar
Unfortunately I can’t remember the exact specs on the LED’s, but I think they were ‘Red 3mm LED 1500mcd Round Clear’ and the resistor was ‘110 Ohm 0.5 Watt Metal Film Resistor’.
Based on the note I got from Jaycar!
@Scuba Made ok, thank you. I'll come to my local jaycar on Friday and show them your message so they can assist me. I'll try to do it myself and let you know if it is successful. Thanks again. I do appreciate your help
Ok cool, no worries! Thank you 🙏🏼
I hope it works for you! feel free to show them the video and the picture in the video I show at about 8:30 and if they ask what store did that for me it was the Burleigh store on the Gold Coast!
what posessed then into thinking that such part wouldn't need to be serviced..smh
Haha who knows ay! They probably weren’t thinking much past the warranty period of the car.
@@ScubaMade exactly lol
