Pompeii Herculaneum stibillae are the only cities in history buried for 1,700 years by volcano other than sodom and gomorrah and in WW2 Hiroshima and Nagasaki by atomic bombings

In 79BC a vulcanic explosion from the Vesuvio covered the formerly proeminent portuary city of Pompei and it’s approximately 20.000 inhabitants in 6 meters of ashes. It is commom to think they were covered in lava, however the lava wouldn’t have enough reach for that. The ruins that were left there are an amazing archeological site because they are not only incredible and heartbreaking to look at but also very insightful on the way people lived at the time.
