Well I remember this match so well, even 28 years later. This was a bright and sunny afternoon. Steffi's sixth final in Wimbledon (already) and Jana's first. Steffi had been on fire throughout the tournament (2 double bagels, no set granted) and we all thought she would have won easily, considering Jana's poor experience in GS finals (this was only her second final overall). And surprinsingly I must say, Jana dominated the first set. She should have won the tie break, well she could not, shaked a little bit, and all seemed to go Steffi's way, according to plan. And then Jana took all of us by surprise. She raised the level of her game (which was already very high indeed !) like I've seen it a few times in my life. This was unbelievable, she changed everything into gold, kept attacking so brilliantly, she even started hitting her flat backhand (which she never does) and my god, this was absolutely awesome. If I remember well, she won 10 games while Steffi only scored 2. The first 5 games in the third set were flawless. She really reached at that time a level beyond belief, and seemed even more unstoppable on grass than the great Martina. Well, we all know the end of the story , a very sad story. I must say I was and I'm still a huge fan of Steffi, but I would have liked Jana to close this match. She should have won, and even more, I admit she DESERVED more than anybody else to win this one. But fortunately she won in 98 against the unbearable Tauziat (I'm French but I can't stand that awful player who kept envying and criticising players like Seles and french players as well, well she acted like a true witch on and off court).
Stef 107.
No comment !

Steffi Graf was the greatest “closer” of all time..Jana opened the door a bit and she knocked it down. Steffi never lost a tennis match because she had nerves. Amazing mental strength and will to win. The goat!
@@carrerau7138 Even though Sabatini improved her game in 1991/92, the thing is she found a way to get inside Steffi's head which had a lot to do with Steffi losing so many matches against Sabatini at that time. But it wasn't just Steffi struggling against Sabatini, you also had Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Jana Novotna who were also starting to confound Steffi. Looking back, I think Jana's all-court game presented numerous problems for Steffi while Arantxa's tenacity speaks for itself. But Sabatini is the girl who set the blueprint for playing Steffi by attacking Steffi's vulnerable bh side. Not to mention Sabatini was crafty as she extended the points with her loopy topspin shots as she basically moonballed Steffi into mistakes. Arantxa used this tactic as well against Steffi but I think Sabatini used it more than Arantxa? Not just that, but Sabatini took a page out of Jana's book by rushing the net which robbed Steffi of time. And if all that wasn't enough, Steffi had to contend with Monica who kept getting better and better. And with Monica playing at or near her peak while Steffi was slumping didn't bode well for Steffi when she faced Monica. So as Steffi coped with numerous off-court issues and her game was in a downturn, girls like Monica, Arantxa, Sabatini and Jana took advantage scoring some big wins over Steffi.
@@michaelpaskos9052 Sabatini did not improve her game in 1991/92. The numbers tell a different story. Sabatini 1991/92: 121-21 win/loss Sabatini 1988/89: 120-19 win/loss
Would've been wonderful if Jana had won here, but sometimes a story of redemption makes for a better story. She certainly redeemed herself. The last of the serve and volleyers. Who knows if we will ever see another.
This is a great video. Nice highlights and loved your comments throughout. I was a big Steffi fan but was sad to see Novotna bottle it in the final set. Steffi did raise her level
I think I recall Jana once said that she gave Steffi another chance in the third set in this match and Steffi just pounced on it. As you had mentioned, the best will play well at critical moments. And Jana didn't really have that mental fortitude. There was not only this match but her loss to Rubin at the 1995 French Open, she was up 5-2 in the second set against Graf at the 1994 U.S Open semifinals but lost that set (and the match), and her two losses against Seles in 1991 and 1992 as well. At the 1991 Australian Open (on a surface that heavily favoured Seles), Jana was up a set and it was 3-3 in the second when she suddenly couldn't keep the ball in court anymore. At the 1992 year ending championships, she won the first set 6-3 and I think she was up either 3-1 or 4-1 in the second when she turned very tentative. And Seles just pounced on her. But thankfully, Jana got more chances to win Wimbledon in 1997 and 1998 and was able to win it before retiring.
Seles and Graf were so mentally solid, many were affected by that, it was very difficult to win them and close the matches, both had a tremendous confidence in themselves.

I attended the last match between Steffi and Jana --- 1999 Indian Wells QF. The match did not take long --- 6-2, 6-0. Jana was shaking her head throughout. Afterward, Steffi remained on the court to practice.
I’m i huge Steffi Graf fan and I wish your comment were true but alas it can’t be That title in all honesty belongs to Navratilova with an incredible 9 Wimbledon titles
I had to stop watching at the end as it was far too painful. Would have loved for Jana to have won this in straight sets. There certainly were opportunities. Jana played so well in her previous 2 matches. The semi final was an absolutely breathtaking performance. Of course we remember Jana as a truly wonderful sport and a fine ambassador. A real champion.
I think the stabbing of Seles have had minor consequences concerning Steffis Wimbledon titles because on grass Steffi destroyed her twice (24:4 games) and Monica never won it.
LOL Graf probably wins more Wimbledons without the Seles stabbing, as the draw in 94 is different and she wins there. So atleast 8 vs 7 if I had to guess. Seles was no competition to Graf on grass at all.
At 4:28, you mention that the last two serve and volley players were Novotna and Tauziat. I think Lori McNeil was still around during that time as well (I can't recall when exactly she retired). I would definitely call her a S&V type player.
@@franciscolaprida2133 Oh yes, I remember her. She was a player who could test Graf to the max. Graf often had trouble with net rushers. She often didn't have problems with players like Sukova or Mandlikova though (with the exception of maybe one or two matches).
McNeil defeated Graf the following year in the 1st round! That was the first time ever that Graf lost a 1st round GS match and the first time a reigning WIM champ lost in the 1st round
I think it was unfair that so many in the media kept saying that Jana choked, when anyone can see that Steffi played amazingly to come back and she made some unbelievably good/lucky shots. Sure Jana made some unforced errors and double faults, but I'd hardly say it was a "choke job" or something like that.
Yes. But Jana did choke. She hit some absolutely terrible shots, double faults, hit balls 7 feet long….. just horrendous. Steffi played like the champion that she is, but Jana did choke here
It was a definite choke job by Jana I’m afraid, and you can’t give a great champion like Graf any kind of opportunity. Once they sense blood they move in for the kill, as Steffi did here by elevating her game when she needed to.
Maybe this sheer will to never give up even in the most difficult situations separates the Greats from Good players...Steffi here is the Greatest of All time.
Navratilova at the FO 87, Sabatini in Wimbledon 91, Sanchez at the FO 96, Hingis at the FO 99 all even served for the title against Steffi - and lost. Navratilova led Steffi 75 20 in the Wimbledon 88 final and 63 42 in the USO 89 final - and lost both matches. So Novotna was not alone.
if you come to the net it needs to be on the back of a superb shot. Novotna was coming to the net on the back of any old thing making it super easy for Graf to make a passing shot in the later stages of the third set.
From watching Graf's passing shots in the video, I remember Graf was like Novotna who could only do slice backhands. She was beaten easily by Navratilova at Wimbledon when Navratilova kept hitting the balls to her backhand. Then one year later, Graf was able to develop a top spin backend and got a revenge.
Graf played less than 50 per cent this day, she lacked power for some reason , Novotna is an excellent player however. but Graf has to be off for her to have a chance , that is how good Graf is,

Very painful to see Jana lost her commanding lead. She was a most talented player and a gracious person. Steffi was a great champ too of course but she was also the luckiest. Steffi had so many allies. A crazy german took care of Monica Seles and nerves took care of Jana Novotna for Steffi!
No top player had more injuries than Steffi. Her reconstructive knee surgery at age 27 virtually ended her career. She had already won a staggering 21 slams at that point. Imagine she had been able and willing to compete until age 40 like Serena….
No offence to Serena but in my opinion Graf is the GOAT. Graf had more tough opponents in her career Evert, Navratilova, Sabatini, Sanchez Vicario, Seles, Hingis, Serena, Venus. Also Graff won the Golden calendar Grand Slam (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open and Gold Medal in the Olympics)
No, that’s a misconception. Jana most probably would have pulled through against any other player. To close a slam final against Steffi Graf is the ultimate stress test. Greater players than Jana have failed it.
@@carrerau7138 Agreed, Steffi never seems to get enough credit for taking the '93 ladies final, most people only look at Jana letting it slip away. Like you said, greater players than Jana failed to close out Steffi at Wimbledon. In the '91 Wimbledon ladies final Sabatini had her chances but she got nervous which opened the door for Steffi. And of cousre Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in both the '95 & '93 finals had Steffi on the ropes. Maybe Sabatini and Jana choked in the '91 & '93 ladies finals respectively, but Steffi raised her game too which is how she got past Arantxa in the 1995 final.

Very nicely done. Honest to both players. Thank you
Thanks
Jana almost had it ... but she didn't really believe she deserved it. Five years later, she conquered her fears and finally won Wimbledon.
Yes finally!!!❤️
Thank you for the beautiful analysation. Both of them played such incredible tennis but Steffi was way too mentally strong
Thanks!
Steffi Graf was the greatest “closer” of all time..Jana opened the door a bit and she knocked it down. Steffi never lost a tennis match because she had nerves. Amazing mental strength and will to win. The goat!
You're right. For me, Steffi and Monica (Monica before the attack) are insurmountable in history because of their mental strength.
In 1991/92 Steffi lost quite a few matches due to bad nerves, especially against Sabatini.
I love Steffi and she is The GOAT, but nerves did sneak up on her during her fathers mess.
@@carrerau7138
Even though Sabatini improved her game in 1991/92, the thing is she found a way to get inside Steffi's head which had a lot to do with Steffi losing so many matches against Sabatini at that time.
Sabatini 1991/92: 121-21 win/loss
Sabatini 1988/89: 120-19 win/loss
Would've been wonderful if Jana had won here, but sometimes a story of redemption makes for a better story. She certainly redeemed herself. The last of the serve and volleyers. Who knows if we will ever see another.
It’s true, the last. Women’s tennis has changed, I think for worse, I see it very difficult for a woman to play like that again.
The best serve & volleyer since Martina Navratilova. Tauziat & Sabatini are also very good volleyers.

Really painful, for me too.
Superb game.. Mind voice of Steffi at that time 'Don't trouble me'...
i prefer this game over non stop baseline rallies

I think the stabbing of Seles have had minor consequences concerning Steffis Wimbledon titles because on grass Steffi destroyed her twice (24:4 games) and Monica never won it.
maybe the difference would have been less RG
LOL Graf probably wins more Wimbledons without the Seles stabbing, as the draw in 94 is different and she wins there. So atleast 8 vs 7 if I had to guess. Seles was no competition to Graf on grass at all.
At 4:28, you mention that the last two serve and volley players were Novotna and Tauziat. I think Lori McNeil was still around during that time as well (I can't recall when exactly she retired). I would definitely call her a S&V type player.

I think it was unfair that so many in the media kept saying that Jana choked, when anyone can see that Steffi played amazingly to come back and she made some unbelievably good/lucky shots. Sure Jana made some unforced errors and double faults, but I'd hardly say it was a "choke job" or something like that.
It was a combination of Jana choking and Steffi elevating her game.
Yes. But Jana did choke. She hit some absolutely terrible shots, double faults, hit balls 7 feet long….. just horrendous. Steffi played like the champion that she is, but Jana did choke here
Jana did choke. Those horrible double faults gave graf an opportunity to seize the opportunity
She choked, don't sugar coat it. She had a huge lead and had a meltdown
It was a definite choke job by Jana I’m afraid, and you can’t give a great champion like Graf any kind of opportunity. Once they sense blood they move in for the kill, as Steffi did here by elevating her game when she needed to.
Will you be able to upload the full match. thanks

One of the worst chokes in a final in women's tennis history. To be up 4-1 in the final set and then lose 6-4 is mind-blowing.
Dramatic end 😔
Navratilova at the FO 87, Sabatini in Wimbledon 91, Sanchez at the FO 96, Hingis at the FO 99 all even served for the title against Steffi - and lost.
Navratilova led Steffi 75 20 in the Wimbledon 88 final and 63 42 in the USO 89 final - and lost both matches.
So Novotna was not alone.
Que tennis maravilloso hanna
Que tenis jaja una maravilla
if you come to the net it needs to be on the back of a superb shot.
Steffi never was beaten easily by Navratilova in Wimbledon.

Dramatic to Jana 😤
Very painful to see Jana lost her commanding lead. She was a most talented player and a gracious person. Steffi was a great champ too of course but she was also the luckiest. Steffi had so many allies. A crazy german took care of Monica Seles and nerves took care of Jana Novotna for Steffi!
No top player had more injuries than Steffi.
Her reconstructive knee surgery at age 27 virtually ended her career. She had already won a staggering 21 slams at that point.

Agreed, Steffi never seems to get enough credit for taking the '93 ladies final, most people only look at Jana letting it slip away.
Even in seles absense....steffi was struggling to win. I doubt her mental strength....if there was seles instead of Jana in the final set leading 4-1 .....it was 6-1 finish .....
