We’re in Devises Marina as this week Alba is being taken out of the water for blacking and we are going to be preparing the roof for a fresh layer of paint. Over the next two episodes, we will walk you step by step through the whole process of painting the narrowboat roof on a budget and the mistakes we have made so you can avoid them.
Narrowboat painting is an art form. There are no hard and fast rules of colour scheme, style, or design, it really depends on you. If you decide to do your own narrowboat painting DIY, some basic ideas will help.
The most important in narrowboat painting is the preparation. In this video we will walk you through what it really takes to take the paint off. The orbital sander was not the only tool we needed.
When sanding wear protective clothing and dust masks. Paint dust is nasty stuff. If possible, all dust must be removed from your working environment and surfaces.
Whatever the standard of finish you end up with, you can be proud that you had a go. It’s your boat so who are you trying to impress? You’ll be looking at the boat anyway from 6 feet away and not 6 inches and we all know things look better from a distance!

Big well done for getting stuck in. A wire brush grinder can really kick back on you without the side bar attached. Good job and it looks so much better already.
Cruising the Canals does look like a relaxing lifestyle but the crunch comes when you have to do all the Maintenance work..

What a tough job to tackle! You both did really well. And, Marina, you are a real trooper. Bending over like that and being on your knees is excruciating. I couldn’t do it but kudos to you, Marina! It's definitely a good thing that you made this yard video - keeps it real and shows how those idyllic moments on the water are hard earned, but all the more worthwhile because of it. An Ayuvedic massage is what is needed for aching muscles - those ancient medics knew what they were about!
Using the right tools for the job would have made your life easier. You did good. Well done

Now that roof was a big job, but you guys did it right, you took off all the old paint. Most people just pry off the loose pieces, sand a little and paint. Sometimes the thorough job is what is necessary, and you did a good job.

Thank you for that "SCABBLER" tip. Did a quick research and by using a steel & tungsten set of teeth you can do a roof in one hour. If I ever get to Birmingham with the boat I purchased I'll confirm the one hour time frame someone posted in a chat room.
I painted my 62ft . Sanded , primed ,painted from blue to green. It took me six weeks ( hard work) but I was doing it on my own . Now I'm just about to paint it a different colour 😅 I changed my mind on the colour. A girl can change her mind 😅😅

The roof was way too much work I don’t know how you both managed. Now it’s almost like having a brand new boat. How much does it cost to get the boat blacked?
Great job Marina, you are awesome. I was wondering if they were going to give you a angle grinder to use. My friend used to rebuild big earth movers and would always use an angle grinder with different abrasive and wire wheels to remove paint. I would help him remove the paint on occasion, it is back breaking work.

I worked in a car factories paint shop for 38 years so appreciate the good work you put in, the cleaning up in between sanding and painting etc really is under estimated and a faff , Well Done 👍
Some seriously hard work done - and alone. The prep work is the hard and important part. The result after one layer of primer shows it was done well. Marina, you need to check to see whether Miles days of work were unavoidable or purposely scheduled on those days to dump the boat work on you.
Very good episode showing the many tools used to remove the old paint and rust. Marina did so well and wore gear to keep her safe. And wow, so much debris swept up and in bin bags. Looking forward to next episodes as Alba gets "Spruced up".

Hey lovely, thank you so much for watching. We did our research but no one seemed to mention the scabbler. Its hard to know what tool we needed before starting to take the paint off. We thought we could do it with the sander. Anyway we had a very economical painting experience anyway it was way cheaper than paying someone to do it.
