Danni and Joe also put up a video of their boat painting experience in a tunnel today. They also said "Don't do it yourselves!" Keep on pushing and eventually it will be completed.
Yeah I haven’t watched it yet but I’ve seen it on my Recommended page haha. Yeah it’s a LOT of hard work and takes weeks. I fully understand why getting a narrowboat painted is pricy now, it’s because it’s hard and takes sooo long
Somehow missed this when first posted and was wondering when the next one was due. Another interesting watch, looking like things are really progressing, I’m looking forward the the finished boat.
Aw it’s so lovely to hear that you’re looking forward to the next one 😊 There should hopefully be a new vlog out this coming Sunday if I can edit it in time! They take up to 15 hours to edit so I post them every other week because it’s a bit too hard to post them weekly while working & renovating the boat! X
@@torquaydan Not there yet but we have undercoated it this week and we are installing the new windows at the moment. Top coat will probably be next year! Looking forward to sharing though and thanks for being along for the ride :D
I used to be a painter and decorater large flat area's are always a problem with white you get shadows. What a sterling job you both are doing its looking great. Top trick if you want to mix paint get a plater mixer end attach it to a drill through paint lid oh put hole in lid first then mix on slow setting it works all my best to you both xx
It looks fabby. It just needs to be good enough, you have a lovely old boat which has lots of bumps and bevels which help tell its story. And it looks grand. xx
All I can say is jolly well done guys! Your boat already looks so good, a caterpillar transforming into a beautiful butterfly 😉 you should be very proud of all that hard work! 😌🙏
Considering you had a leaky paint turnnel you've done very well. I'm not going to teach you how to suck eggs, but I've just spent 2 weeks in a paint tunnel to do my roof, I spent ages researching and watching John Barnards vodios on boat painting and speaking to him over the phone (very helpful chap as well as an excellent boat painter). One of the things that I found out was the temperature before applying paint, for example the temp must be at least 3 degrees above dew point before applying paint and paint shouldn't be applied below 5 degrees or above 20 degrees. Regarding the undercoat , you really don't need to lay off the coats because you will be sanding down after the last coat before you apply the top coat. With the top coat apply with a roller and lay off with a brush, to get that good finish use a Purdy Monach Elite brush, it gives excellent results. Sand down between the top coats with 320 grit paper, this will give a good key for the next layer. I did 3 undercoats and two top coats on my roof, and never ever having done it before, It turned out above my expectations. Not really sure I'm up to tackling a whole boat, but I wish you luck. Keep the vlogs coming.
Whether you spray or roller you're going to want to mix the paint with either paint thinner or acetone and of course hardener. The ratios are always on the can and don't pour the paint over the instructions. You will need a good respirator and some good rubber gloves so you don't get oil from your hands on your paint job or primer.. also for blending paint I've always used a dollar store stainless steel whisk I cut the loop off the end and put it in a regular drill until that an angle if you go straight in it'll fold the paint you want to blend the paint so just angle towards the side of the can personally I'd spray but good luck either way
If you wish to dry the paint process quickly. Put a blow heater inside to get hot and close the hatches for a few hours. Leave a couple of windows slightly open. The inside will get hot warming up the whole boat to dry the paint quickly.
Definately accept your mattress offer of spraying the boat. Any help from friends who know what they are doing can only be an advantage. Your boat will look amazing 💚
Hi guys just painted a new sailaway shell myself this last few months. All outside. Not ideal. Was too hot to do it in the better weather. And still same really wen it turned. 2 undercoats and 2 top coats. Rollered and layed it off. Looks great on a dull day - but terrible(to me i expected better result)on a sunny day. Its the parts every foot strip were it overlays last strip edges. Working single handed- not easy. Also - i used 240 grit by hand to key primer to undercoat on first side. I dont think thats good enough. Pulling off the masking tape ripped out fresh paint back to primer.too late in year to chsnge that side. 2nd side 120 grit and a sander. Didnt have same problem- thank####. Very disheartening - overall - theres always another time - at least the metals protected - if not as pretty as hoped. At least i know i can do the inside a good job. Good video - no bull. 👍
Samsabode was Sam his dog that lived on his boat with him a German shepherd. Sheehan is the family name Micheal Sheehan my grandad a Irish descent name . The dove 🕊 is a sign of peace the family emblem.
@@meganearly8763 Ah, that makes sense! A couple we made friends with on the canals (Martin & Di) knew Mick and told us why the boat was called Samsabode but I didn't know much about Sheehan and the dove so thank you so much for explaining! Seems like so much love was felt on this boat, I hope we can do you proud :)
For safety you need to wear masks as there could be lead in that paint if it’s an old boat, please be careful your health is so important, keep up the hard work but be safe.
Thanks Craig much appreciated. I did wear one in the end just typically not in any of the shots ha we had extractors on the machines too too keep the dust down plus the tunnel has a static sheet that the dust sticks to which was good. PPE is a must for this kinda work
Using the right tools and an appropriate location it's not a difficult job. The sanders you were using were just not up to the job. If you can't get shot blasting to remove paint, the next best way is mains powered angle grinders with fibre discs to strip back to bare steel. Doing this would actually be quicker than what you did.
Hey appreciate your comment ... We werent going down to bare steel we just wanted to key the paint but also to take off years & years of bobbly paint jobs, which the sanders did a good job of doing & it looks soooo much better for it. Ideally if we had the funds & the time we would of got it blasted but unfortunately those things together are in short supply. Plus would of required way more primer & undercoat to achieve the same results.
Trying to keep costs as low as possible because the project is already over budget :( but I would definitely have had it sand blasted if it was within the budget
At the start of the video, yes. Mike lives in Brighton, I live in the midlands, we’re long distance so he helps on the boat when he’s staying here in the midlands
Deffo get your mate to spray paint did mine with roller and your can see so many patches at a angle saving grace looks Wicked from a distance 😂 The shelf lmao you mean gunnels or gunwale depending how posh you are.
It’s a shelf to meeeeee 😂 Yeah this week we actually put another undercoat on (green) with rollers and on one side there’s no roller marks and on another there’s lots where we didn’t do a thick enough coat so we shall see! Only problem with spraying it is that it’s a thin layer and apparently would need about six coats
I've painted several wooden yachts. Roller and tipping everytime
All the building and renovation we have done, we learned to always have extra tarpaulins. Lots of tarps!
Amazing vlogs love watching you transform your narrowboat, well done!!!
Thanks so much! 😊
Boy what a job they have taken on, good luck guys.
Thanks! We need it 😂
Really useful. I'm a noob, and I learned a lot. Thank you
I’m glad!
Watching this from USA Florida first time Watching and can't wait for the next one. You'll are doing a great job 👏
Thanks so much! And it’s so lovely to have someone watching all the way over in the states x
such a big undertaking but it will be so worth it in 3 end
Definitely!
very well done...look forward to following your trips on the canal network....

What an achievement. You both deserve a medal
Aw thanks Daniel, it was the most physically challenging project I’ve ever done 😅

Agreed! It definitely doesn’t need to be perfect and won’t be. We just do our best and that’s enough 😊
Beautiful couple glad to see you still smiling and enjoying boat life 🤗sorry the tunnel was leaking well done for soldiering on x great job xx
You’re so lovely Jeannie, thanks! 🥰
Keep going you WILL win well done so far.
Thanks David! Really appreciate the encouragement

Wow how well did you do in two weeks well done your doing amazing. Would get your mate to spray it for you take care
Thanks Caroline! 😊

Thank you! We wouldn’t recommend others paint their own boat haha it’s hard work, but it will look a lot better in the end
Really enjoy watching these updates but I do feel for you both. I think things will get much easier from now. 👍
I hope so 😂 We still have a few gruelling jobs to do like the engine bay and water tank but we’re getting closer and closer to the fun stuff!

I would roller the paint not spray….roller gives a thicker coat I would think

Can I ask where is it being worked on that tent is cool
