    Being independent is fine and all, but getting help when needed is how you learn to be independent! I've renovated a few houses, always starting out on my own but when problems arise that i don't have the knowledge to fix, I ask around for some expertise. Watch and learn as the helper solves your problem and now you have the expertise! I've always found people are generally eager to help out, either with physical work or imparting knowledge. Don't forego it in some fit of "I can do it myself-ishness".

    It is okay to film the not so perfect parts, because nobody is perfect, so don't stop, you two are doing a fantastic job so far renovating your narrowboat. a project like this is not an easy thing to do, it will test the both of you and it will get very stressful at times especially when things are going as planned, always try to think and be positive, you have to look ahead and think what your home will be like when you have finished. The double glazed windows will look really smart when they are all in. Keep up the good work the both of you.

If you’re thinking of doing boat life solo, May Moon Narrowboat and Earle Writes are great vlogs to follow for inspiration. I suspect it's too late for this, but for anyone else: When trying to install something like these windows with multiple screw holes to worry about, if you can do it, install it first dry (no glue) with only 2 screws in place, then mark/drill/tap all the remaining screws with it in place. That will ensure that all the holes line up together.

    • @mike-driftwoodfolk2651

    A better tool to use rather than the chalk marker is a "spring punch" which is used in metal working. You just push--you don't need a hammer and it leaves a divot for the drill. I would also suggest starting the holes with a "center drill" , less likely to skate or break. ( US terms, don't know if these are called something else in UK)

    • @cn22willamette
      @cn22willamette Год назад +1

      Also use a 2 flute "gun tap" which drives the chip through the hole to the other side rather than a standard 3 or 4 flute tap that you have to keep backing out to clear the chips. ( again a US term)

    • @mike-driftwoodfolk2651
      @mike-driftwoodfolk2651 Год назад +1

      Thanks bud much appreciated. Yer I was thinking of that as I was doing them but I didn't want to go buy it and then never use it again. In the end we just marked them all with a drill then took the frame out and drilled all the marks. Don't worry all similar terms ha

    • @mike-driftwoodfolk2651
      @mike-driftwoodfolk2651 Год назад +1

      Ah that would have been good shout actually. . In the end I purchased 4 HSS taps which went through like butter although after 190 holes I only have one left 😅

Yes we went to Caldwells windows and they are thermal break double glazed windows (the thermal break is to stop condensation) with a 4inch radius (our old ones were 3inch but they fit fine as they have wide frames). Caldwells are by far the cheapest we could find and great quality too.

      Hello Mike, I was worried some vandal could kick it in. Especially with the idiots that seem to be hanging around the canals of late. I saw one boat that was for sale, that had custom made horizontal bars over the windows. They were quite ornate. Maybe something sadly that boaters will have to do if things get worse. It's good to see you're such a perfectionist. My carpenter here is also English. I think perhaps you are trained a little better than some of the Aussies lol. You're nearly at the finishing end.
