    I used to live in a caravan where the bedroom area was almost exactly what you have described. I can categorically tell you that changing your bed into benches and a table is a right pain. I'd go for the breakfast bar idea. Plus would you really want to eat with friends in your bedroom with your clothes hanging? It's an idea for sure, but keep your bedroom restful and a place to retreat to

    If you do a built in sofa, you could Ave plenty of storage underneath. Then do one of those removable boat tables, you screw a pole in and a table top fits on top. That could be both a work space and a table for when you have dinner or company over.

    Rv tubs are as small as 24"x36"
    Seems like wasted space that would be better used for storage or work.

    Hi. I’ve some experience of boating and working from home. At one stage when my kids were small I used my bedroom as an office. It wasn’t a good idea. I never got away from work and my bedroom ceased to be a relaxing space. Plus having to set up and down your bed each day loses its fun quite quickly. If it were my boat I’d put my office space in the lounge. You could use the screw in table stand in front your sofa as a desk and possibly at a lower level to make the base for a put up bed for guests as many boats do. Or depending on how much workspace you need the breakfast bar could be a great idea as it would give you somewhere to eat too. Strongly recommend you keep your bedroom as just a bedroom.
    I’m prob about a year behind you. I’m looking at boats but can’t proceed yet. I’m watching numerous Nb vlogs. Your vlog is enjoyable and information. You’re doing a grand job. Please keep it up
    And in my experience, we learn much more by our mistakes, and tend to value more and appreciate more the things we initially found it harder to do.

    Merry Christmas to you both, personally I would go for a shower unit instead of a bath, 2 reasons for this, 1: it would give you more room for a work space. 2: a shower would use less water and save on gas/diesel used to heat up water for a bath. You 2 are doing a fantastic job, keep it up.

    If your a lady that enjoys a sit down bath / soak with the option of a overhead shower, not cheap but take a look at a walkin hip bath. Small and gives you the option to be used as a quick low shower tray or a lazy sit down bath when near a water point.

      Tbh I don't personally care if there is or isn't a bath although Mike really wants to put one in because I've never had one in my home. The primary reason we're toying with putting a small one in is because there are windows spanning the length of both sides of the bathroom so it limits the kind of shower we could put there and so we figured we might as well put a bath + shower head. Plus, it'd make washing a future muddy doggo easier

    Don’t try to use the bed space for anything else, and make it as permanent as you can, the last thing you will be doing is taking the bed apart and having to be building it up every day or time you want to work. You really need to rethink your living area to have a small work area there, I’d even look at using some of the kitchen. Maybe a breakfast bar that can double as a desk or mount the TV on a wall to give you desk space. If you don’t have somewhere that is easy to use you will end up working on the settee with the laptop on your knees.

      Hi Matt thanks for your comment. I completely understand where your coming from. We are trying to make everything as adaptable as we can like you would in a camper van or RV as the boats not much bigger ha. The bedroom idea was just an idea & we will still have a modular bed but one with alot more permanent areas. As we've said this was just the first rough draft of our layout and since then we've been revising it to accommodate what we can in such a small space. The breakfast bar was an idea actually but it would be to high and without a suitable chair long work days would be painful and extremely uncomfortable. Because its a breakfast bar it would look weird lowering it to desk height too. You read my mind with the tv on the wall. We were thinking that plus a small cabinet underneath for some storage. Don't worry we will find a space for a decent desk somewhere in this tiny home haha. We are still looking at the flow of the layout but also the ability to adapt furniture and walls for storage and or work spaces. We love all your ideas and comments even the direct to the point ones ha. And we appreciate you being aboard for the journey 👍🏼

  • @dh4521

    Personally I think that a bath is a waste of time on a narrowboat. We live full time liveaboard on a 62' narrowboat and we have a decent sized 500ltr fresh water tank. There is no way that we could ever justify wasting so much, not just water but also the energy required to heat the water for a bath.
    I suppose that there is an argument for having a half sized bath tub and using it predominantly as a shower tray and at least you will have the option to have a bath if you have enough time at a waterpoint.
    On a smaller boat like yours, I I would ditch the bath idea and stick to a stone resin shower tray and decent thermostatic mixer bar shower.

      Hey guys thanks for your comment we appreciate it. As nesha said we are open to a shower too 😊 But the reason i suggested a bath is two fold really ... Nesha has never had a bath, just a shower & as this would be her home first i thought it would be nice for her to have a bath so she can unwind occasionally .. Of course there will be a shower in the bath like most homes but its a chance for her to have one & relax when she needs.... The second part of my reasoning is ... If the bilge suddenly packs up instead of it overflowing through some shower doors, put the plug in & it would just fill the bath & thus no water damage or anything as its all contained. Basically what you said about a half bath with a shower so we get the option of both but we will see. Of course we are still revising the layout & getting all your experienced comments 💪🏽

      Yes that actually makes sense when you put it like that. You are effectively building a little redundancy into your design and that's never a bad idea.
      On the subject of enjoying a bath, I would be lying if I said that I don't miss the odd full on hot soak but for me, that's what Premier Inns are for.
      Book yourself in for a night and have as many hot baths as you like.
      Take care guys!

    I'd find having to pull the bed apart to be work would become a pain in the neck. Also what happens if one of you are sick? I guess you aren't going to go cuirsing much. As you'll have to dismantle you bed anyway. Or clamber over it. Tricky when it's pouring with rain. Coming in onto your bed or even into your bedroom in wet gear?
    Love the bath idea but takes a lot of water and cost off heating that water. Again I'd go for a shower, maybe a one with a sitting tub. But that would give you more space in the lounge for a workspace. Warmer in winter too.

    • @mike-driftwoodfolk2651
      @mike-driftwoodfolk2651 Год назад

      Hey thanks for your comment. Yes it would definitely get tired quickly but it wouldnt be the only space Nesha could work from. And the sicknes is a valid point but for us thats temporary so nesha could always move into the other room & work or i could. Oh we will be going cruising as much as we can, i mean we've already done 100miles of back to back days just bringing the boat back & we utterly loved it. Yer that was the idea the centre section will retract for cruising days. But we will be enjoying it at a slower pace a few days here a few days there so not really an issue for us. And if its wet when we cruise we will just cover the bed both sides & have a mat... But from past experience we dont really go to the bow end very much if at all while cruising anyway.
      The bath is an option but wont be an everyday thing. And to let Nesha relax in a bath is priceless for me but i do understand where your coming from. The idea of the shower/sit down tub is good but unfortunately because of how the windows are, the room we gain would be bedroom side & not into the lounge. But we are still revision the layout to best suit us.

    Our past boat had a similar bedroom area to what you are suggesting, it was a real pain to make almost impossible on your own and there are times when you are on your own. Our bed is 6 foot wide - is made up of 2 single 3 foot mattresses and they lift up sideways to allow us to walk through the middle to get out the bow doors.. . Our current boat has an L-shaped dinette - which we have 2 tables for a small one and a larger one. e can therefore used as a sitting room without a table, dining area or work area. Not a great lover of the breakfast bar, I like sharing food with others and prefer to be sitting around a table. Have you considered covering some of the side windows in the bedroom to give yourself more storage space so your chests can become wardrobes. Keep up the great works

    Hey! Such an exciting stage to be able to plan 🤭
    For us personally, having lived on ours for almost 2 years and Wes working full time.
    Our advise would be have a dedicated workspace that’s there all the time ready to go.
    Swapping the bed to the workspace sounds like a brilliant idea but it means that you have to compromise on the comfort of the bed and can’t have a proper mattress and also it’s a lot of effort to transform it into work mode, and then bed mode!
    I think our favourite idea was the breakfast area for the workspace but also thought of another.
    You could get one of the dinette style tables with the pole etc and put it up in the corner of the sofa, to make an add on workspace. And could store the table top behind the sofa maybe 😊
    I’d also have to agree with the other commenters about the bath. Every boater we have spoke to with one never uses them unless they are full time in a marina. A big waste of resources and space, as nice as they are.
    Another final tip we would say it adapt the space for you as a priority and don’t really consider guests. It’s great to think about having space for guests or room for visits etc, but at the end of the day it’s you who will be living on it full time and the amount of time guests will be on the boat in comparison isn’t worth making big space/layout sacrifices for. 😊 we almost compromised on some thing that would’ve made it easier for guests, but we are so so glad we didn’t because having a proper sofa etc is worth it and we always make it work with guests 😊
    Sorry for such a long comment 😅 I’m sure whatever you choose it’ll be great!!

    Hiya, great planning 👍 unless you really, really want a bath - I wouldn’t bother. You will be endlessly filling the water tank/replacing the gas and they take up a lot of space. If you economise the space in the bathroom you could have a little more space for your work area. Standing desk is a great idea - I find sitting at a desk against a wall on a boat is really uncomfortable due to leaning and rocking. For this reason, a dinette or l-shaped seating area with table/converts to a bed for guests (or as a huffy bed 😂) is a good idea. I think you are going to need the main bed raised to use the underneath as storage. I’ve lived on my 55ft for 16 years and still don’t have enough space for everything 😂 (I work from home too). A dedicated nice big bed, I’ve found, is essential for a couple in a small space. Anyway - we are all different and this is just what I’ve found personally. I have changed mine so much too, so many times I wish I could start from scratch again, now that I know what works for me.

The tub is something we’re undecided on but Mike really wanted to include it so we’ve tried the layout with it. It would only be used when at a marina so we’re not sure it’s worth it tbf. As for the workspace, we’re still going to make the bed area be able to turn into a table/bench area but are also going to make me a proper workspace elsewhere, just still deciding where 😊 I wish in hindsight that we had bought a 55ft boat instead haha

It will be nearly free too due to foraged wood as well as the many many offcuts i have from my business .. Second a diesel heater to just keep it at a good temp overnight (i have one in my workshop & even on high it barely uses anything) & lastly a few radiators to help dry clothes & towels mostly but equally for hest when needed. Aww well its lovely to have you aboard. Oh wow that woukd be incredible!!💪🏽👍🏼

    Hello, Pete mentioned a shower instead of a bath and you could recess the desk in that space from the lounge side. I have a bath the size of a regular shower. It's just has the high sides, which gives you a bath. It uses far less water. I also thought the same as someone else. You need a cupboard with hanging space. The bedroom conversion would be a pain and what is someone got sick and needed to be in that room, when you needed to work. Breakfast bar idea is good. TV cabinet idea okay. Remember re sale as well. The area has to be used by others if you sold. Happy New Year to you both.

      Hi Alison! I don’t know if many heard this but I mentioned there is hanging space area for a rail or small wardrobe in the bedroom in the video 😊 I tried explaining in the vid but the bathroom would be smaller and the walls would move (or at least one.) Therefore it’ll make a bit more space for a slim wardrobe. The bathroom wall on the lounge side can’t be moved even if we make the bathroom smaller because there is a window in the way, so it will only make space for a workspace in the bedroom. But re sickness: that’s why I want multiple workspace options 🥰 We’re going to make the bed able to turn into benches and a walkway regardless of whether I use it primarily as the workspace or not because it gives us the option of having a clear walkway to the bow door. We personally hate when boats require you to climb over the bed to get out the bow door haha. Agreed, we are considering resale. Thanks, enjoy the end of your year too x

      Hi Alison thanks for your comment they are all much appreciated. Unfortunately due to the placement of the windows the only space we would gain is the bedroom side which is still good. We will having hanging rails many of them 🙈 but still deciding on what wall. This was just a rough idea of what weve been talking about together that Nesha has lovingly put together. But the reason i suggested a bath is not for me ha ... Nesha has never had a bath, just a shower & as this would be her home first i thought it would be nice for her to have a bath so she can unwind occasionally .. Of course there will be a shower in the bath like most homes .. Like you said basically a high sided shower... The second part of my reasoning is ... If the bilge suddenly packs up instead of it overflowing through some shower doors, put the plug in & it would just fill the bath & thus no water damage or anything as its all contained. Good idea about getting sick we didnt think of that. I will make sure Nesha has a few comfortable places to work for definite. As far as the resale goes i think we will be fine. We will make sure the finish is long lasting & that the space works for us as well as any others in the future. Thanks guys much appreciated 🤗. We hope you have a lovely end to the year & a good start to another 💪🏽

    The computer Aided design layout looks fun as for workspace I would go for the bedroom idea as you can put work stuff away at the end of day and it will feel more like home than just another space. Oh and the tool belts will be extremely useful when you're both on the cut because you can carry a windlass, other lock keys and phone in them. I hope you both have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

    • @DriftwoodFolk

      I never thought of using it for the windlass etc but that makes sense! And yes you’re right, it’ll be quite nice to put it away at the end of the day and have a boundary between work and home. Thanks!

    If you make your bulkhead dividing walls out of 15mm plywood you could gain 90mm !

    • @DriftwoodFolk
      @DriftwoodFolk  Год назад +1

      Insulation will be going in the walls so in total the stud walls will be 60mm I think (because 15mm ply x2 sides + 30mm insulation.) Think I got that right but not sure, Mike will know though x

      @@grahamwright8440 hey Graham thanks for your comment .. There are a few reasons for us insulating the stud walls really ... One for noise ... Nesha works from home & records alot so would need a quieter space to do that in, so putting insulation in the walls will also give it better sound deadening. (especially when someones in the bathroom 👀) The 2nd reason would be for heat ... As the fire is in the living room & we are having a walk through bathroom we would have to leave the doors open to heat the whole boat, so we want to keep as much of the heat in each room as possible. (We will also have other sources of heat too). And my 3rd reason is to hide wires & pipework within the walls with hatches where needed so its neat & tidy & leaves room for us to hang things on the walls too. Walls id say we would get away with 12mm or 9mm ply minimum on each side plus 30mm insulation so 48-54mm finished wall thickness. I realise most people do 18mm walls & thats it but for us 100mm or so extra is nothing to have pipework, wires & insulation within that. And saying all that we can also have a proper door & lining which will add to the sound/insulating properties as well as aesthetics. Appreciate your comment tho. Its nice to hear what others have done & thier experience 😊 hope that kinda clears it up abit haha i know its an essay & i apologies.

    Do you really need the bath? The bathroom looks comparatively big so could squeeze out a bit more space with a shower only to use in the spaces you will occupy more often?

    • @mike-driftwoodfolk2651
      @mike-driftwoodfolk2651 Год назад

      Thanks for your comment. It's a common question in the comments but as I've said before even if we went for a shower we are unable to move the internal walls because of the original window locations so we wouldn't gain any more space in any area unfortunately. As much as we would want it. Just gotta design a layout around the boat which is always a fun challenge as you can see. But we appreciate your input & comments

    Do you really need all that space for a TV? We ditched ours long ago - if ever there is something worth watching (very rare) we find a laptop is quite acceptable. So, lose the TV and gain a good work area?

      Thanks for that @dereham1. Its nice to hear what others have lived with & changed. Ideally for us we would like a tv for movie nights with guests as well as hooking my pc up to it to do my work while nesha does hers ... Also for me ha i have a PlayStation (yes im never growing up) which i like to use but also has youtube an such on so a good all rounder which id like to keep so a tv would be necessary for us i think .... But i have had an idea of moving it and creating a good work space for Nesha. Appreciate your comments & suggestions
