    David, very important to use the right colour paint. I knew a bloke once who painted his boat in camouflage colours. When he finished painting he popped in to a nearby canal-side pub for a beer (and a cheese sandwich). When he came back to where he moored his boat.... he couldn't find it!

    You brought back a fond memory when describing your near miss on the water side. ‘Don’t step back to admire your work’. Took me straight back 35 years to my Dad shouting up to me and my brothers painting the upstairs window frames, using a narrow ledge for access, when we were youngsters. I think he meant it ‘tongue in cheek’ but am sure, despite his failing health, he would have tried to catch us if we had fallen.

    I have been an electrician for 45 years and I can indeed confirm that "screwdrivering" is indeed a word. It's right up there with the phrase "to give something a severe looking at", which is what you did to the rust before you treated it. :-)

    Every colour has a LRV (Light Reflective Value) which ranges from 1 - 100, obviously brilliant white being 100. I'm a qualified decorator, and if you ask at any Dulux Decorator Centre (not the sheds as in B&Q) they can advise you. I could show you two colours, that to you look the same, but one will have a much lower/higher LRV than the other.

    Enjoyed the vlog as always David, you are one of my favorite narrowboaters. Small tech tip for your uncooperative paint can tops. After opening a new can, use a medium sized flat head screwdriver to punch 4 holes in the top trough of the paint can where the lid fits. This is where the paint accumulates as you take the excess off your brush and when you put the top back on , the drying paint glues it shut. The holes will allow the excess paint to drip back into the can where it belongs thus making for easier lid removal in future. Have a great day and stay safe.

    Hi David, just in case it help, I would suggest trying with a floor paint, those that are epoxi with some bits to help with grip. It will not reflect and will offer a good grip when walking on the roof. There are lots of models, normally for warehouses and workshops, garages etc.

    • @t1n4444
      @t1n4444 4 года назад

      Interesting point. However ... because a narrowboat is, usually, of entirely metal construction there is a lot of expansion and contraction through a year, summer to winter.
      On a really hot summer's early afternoon the steel work is almost too hot to touch.
      The paints we use are expected to cope with this movement year in year out.
      Some boats may not be painted in ten to fifteen years, and some for longer than that.
      Ergo if the hard wearing paint you suggest is designed for application on a stable concrete floor it might be that the expansion of the steel may be a job too far for said concrete paint.
      Suitable paint films for steel surfaces are a must, as in fit for purpose. They are not cheap.
      An elaborate repaint, with back to steel preparation, derusting and possibly filling, with painted coach lines and hand painted panels with boats name, plus bow and stern decorative "artwork" might be the thick end of £20,000.
      Even a basic single colour repaint is not much less than £6000.
      The roof of my boat was once repainted in what looked liked "emulsion" over the original paint job.
      It flaked off in no time, goodness only knows what the original owner was thinking.
      What with the high cost of paint jobs a lot of owners are obliged to do the work themselves ... as you can see.

    • @HenrikWind
      @HenrikWind 4 года назад

      I was thinking the same. You dont use a screw on metal. So you just have to remove the ceiling inside to bolt the part again. good luck 😂 Dont know it is possible to
      drill a thread from outside. 🤔

    • @Paul_C
      @Paul_C 4 года назад +1

      @@HenrikWind unless you want/can oversize the bolts you can't. The is the reason why studs are so hard to replace. Normally you drill a tiny hole then tap a tread in and try to remove it.
      I really think he has a piece of the bolt including the nut wandering about. Unless it was a caged nut that lost its caging ability, thus came loose and fell out.

    • @HenrikWind
      @HenrikWind 4 года назад

      @@Paul_C I am a bit lost as my english is not that good, but I think I got the idea. Basically he has to open up form the inside to fix it. But If he dont need that part ( I dont know what it's called) Then live with it (and learn) 😂

    • @t1n4444
      @t1n4444 4 года назад

      @@HenrikWind Hmm, generally fixings to a steel superstructure are a "correct" sized hole subsequently threaded to take a screw. Generally a bolt has a nut. A screw is put into a threaded hole.
      By drilling a hole and then cutting a thread in said hole removes the necessity of getting to the back of the steel plate to place washer(s) and nut.
      Some deck items are welded on and generally this method is used during construction.
      Welding items to a hull post fixing the insulation can result in "issues".
      Which is why welding on sacrificial anodes required a 30 mins firewatch following the welding.

    A paint to consider could be a nonskid paint with the sand like particles, not only should stop the glare but also make the roof safer to walk on. Been enjoying your shows on utube and amazon for the past year up here in Alaska.

    Congratulations, you certainly have more patience than I would have, taking on all of those little rust spots. Can’t wait for part two - “Out Damned Spots”! 😃

    My dad showed me this series on amazon and I gotta say. I really enjoy it, something nice and calming before bed. We’ve been recently watching on RUclips and I thought I’d give the subscribe button a good old whack partly because I love the content but also so I can tell my dad when a new video is up so we can sit and watch it togeather

    Funny how the simplest of jobs turns into a task requiring all manner of skills and many many different tools. Recently repainted the tunnel flashes only for 2 rather vicious swans to come and peck away at the stern plate of the boat causing me to abandon job and paint to dry in the most horrible fashion. Your boat should look great when you eventually leave the marina .😁
