When I heard that NASA would send a microphone on the next Mars rover, Perseverance, I became very excited. I knew that it was going to be the first extraterrestrial sound ever, that humans can hear. The earlier sounds from the moon or spaceships were recorded in an atmosphere brought from Earth. I know it’s probably not the most amazing scientific research category, but I'm a musician very interested in sound and wanted to jam with the first sounds from Mars. I downloaded this 16 minute sound sample from NASA’s homepage. This is the first uninterrupted extraterrestrial recording! In this recording you can hear the sounds of the rover drilling. There is a constant G drone, that makes a martian OM, like an Indian tanpura. It is at least as much about us humans, as about the atmosphere of Mars. I collected some nice pictures of Mars from NASA’s homepage to inspire me in this 16 minutes of improvisation. With this little video I’d like to salute the great scientists of humankind! With their greatness we could get that far.
