- The Typhoon is used by the British military for both domestic security and overseas deployments.
At this year's Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), the cockpit display screen BAE Systems is self-funding was on show, with the defence firm hoping to install it into Typhoons to extend the relevance of the platform as it ages.

Get some more typhoons build as well as upgrades if it’s going to be in service for longer than intended.
We haven’t got enough anyway
yeah, but the last time we had enough planes was before the typhoon so what are we going to do
Typhoon is a great 4.5th gen too, we don't need all stealth aircraft. Typhoons flinging meteor missiles from 100 miles away will never be outdated
Totally agree. Why waste billions on a future airframe that could be 10 or 15+ years down the line and no doubt with numerous setbacks. Buy more tried and tested typhoons and keep updating them like the US does with the F15.
@@teddypicker8799 The Chinese PL-15 already has a longer range, being a somewhat larger missile.
They're able to see the Typhoon from further away and shoot from further away.
Technology never stands still.
@sergarlantyrell7847 and ofc I meant flinging missiles in general I only meant that the missile itself is important.
Realistically the UK needs to purchase more Typhoons, upgrading the existing Tranche 3's to Tranche 4/5 as well buying new airframes. This combined with F-35A's would be sufficient to take us into the next few decades.
Why on earth do we need F-35As when we have the B variant that has the same sensor suite and hidden weapon load and has the flexibility to fly off and on to anywhere? The Typhoon bomb truck combined with the F-35B suppressing and targeting assets is about as lethal as it gets and we have that right now. In short the A variant offers nothing more than what we have already and a lot less flexibility.
And you forget that we have Tempest on its way to replace Typhoon in the 2030s. Unless Labour do as they always do and cancel it.
Eurofighter is already 20 years old, I think another decade, 2 at the most is all we'll get out of it (by then the air frames will be getting to their fatigue limits and they would become more expensive to rebuild them than to replace them). 30 years from a plane is quite alright though!
F-35 will soldier on for a while longer though.
@@1chish The A has a greater payload (the payload bay is longer so it can carry larger stand-off munitions internally), greater range/endurance, slightly stealthier, more nimble (9G vs 7G) etc.
Other than not being able to operate from carriers, it's better in just about every way.
As for cancelling things, as much as I lament the cancellation of TSR2, that was 59 years ago. I don't think there is a single current MP that was in the Labour party back then.
@@sergarlantyrell7847 Not every Typhoon is 20 years old. They have been building them continuously and the earlier Tranche 1 airframes have already been retired.
Typhoon is scheduled to be replaced by Tempest in the 2030s so maybe another 10 years.
F-35 does not do anything the Typhoon does. It is part of the whole strike capability not a duplicate of another part.
@@sergarlantyrell7847 The F-35A can not deliver anywhere near the payload of variety of weapons a Typhoon can. How can you even suggest the A can?
To dismiss the ability to take off / land from carriers (and car parks and short runways) is to dismiss the very major asset and flexibility value of the F-35B. You cannot consider a type in isolation because the B and the Typhoon have been set up to operate as a combined team. Replace the Typhoon with an A and you lose a lot of weapons and capacity and duplicate the sensor capability with the accompanying B. Replace the B and you lose carrier capability for starters.
Not sure I share your trust of Labour. Have you not seen they have triggered a 'Defence Review' and we all know what that means. Cancellations. And worse (as the CEO of Rolls Royce has noted) it will take a year causing huge uncertainty for Tempest and will probably spook our partners in Japan and Italy into leaving before they get too far in. Excuse my cynicism but Starmer is a Europhile, will do anything to get us involved in EU projects and he WILL scrap Tempest on the altar of 'EU Co-operation' and we will be junior partners in the EU fighter project that has gone nowhere. Just having the DR will cause damage as its intended to.
Eurofighter finally gets the Helmet it was supposed to have from day one 👍🏻
Would having a mix of 2 seat Typhoons for the RAF would have been better to replace the Tornado to spread the workload for complex missions like EW?
Don't know how much EW the RAF will actually do in the end. But the Luftwaffe has ordered the dedicated EW version and these aircraft will all be 2 seat versions.
Saw this typhoon at RIAT but I never got a chance to see the new cockpit. Now I know what it was all about!
Soon fighter pilots will be "High G data analysts"
Will it actually be bought? Probably by Germany and Italy but we will do all the development and then when it actually comes to roll it out, we won’t be able to afford it
Fighter jets are literally less expensive in bulk than commercial airliners(export variants that is, of which Typhoon is an example)
Would you rather buy 3 Airbus A350-1000s(~€350 million per jet) or about 10 Eurofighter Typhoons( ~€120 million) for the same price?
I know that’s a dumb comparison but it’s just showing the scale of the numbers, if commercial carriers are ordering 50-60 of those big new jets, I don’t think it would be a problem for a country to obtain military hardware, and the best thing about military is that those jets can easily be taken apart and modernized as the need arises. Take off a few bolts, remove old canopy, insert new one, integrate systems, test, and you are up and running, retrain your pilots, and everything working perfectly!
@@m_swizzy22 totally agree with your logic, but explain to me we have a history or designing amazing upgrades and then test flying them, then installing them on every other users jets, which generates income and then only doing a token few of our own if that?
Typhoon was designed from its inception to be infinitely upgradable, but apparently despite the ease of upgrading them as you state, we’re about to bin all the tranche 1 airframes which have a lot of residual life, in order to keep the remainder of the force flying, whether that be by transferral of funding or parts.
The whole situation is ridiculous
Is there a suggestion that the U.K. is looking to buy another evolution of Typhoon before Tempest arrives? Tranche 5?
Problem with Tempest its still a long way off yes in development but still not operational till 2030
@@David-hi9rp it’s set to enter service in 2035
Upgrades I think. I doubt they will purchase many new airframes.
I just hope they upgrade the entire fleet. Having a mechanically scanned radar on your frontline fighter these days is just embarrassing as AESA is becoming pretty much standard, even on jets from countries that have only just started making jets seem to manage to get an AESA radar in there.
Ngl, I think Tempest will get cancelled.
US and iirc other countries already cancelled their 6th gen fighter programmes so I won't be surprised
I suspect to try and get something out the door fairly quickly, BAE will do a less ambitious mk1 tempest with typhoon engines, electronics, sensors etc. basically a big, stealthy Typhoon.
Heading to high quality high price slow speed and reduced numbers ? I believe a bit more low price fast delivery is needed
That is what current Brazilian Air Force Gripens have in their cockpits.
hopefully now we can get the older variant in dcs
Everyone copying the Gripen cockpit
Does it already come with Netflix or Amazon?
Are the ejection seat propellants removed for such exhibitions or do they remain in place?
Thank god it actually sounds like their is some common sense available in uk defense. EFA is a more capable airframe than the F35 it makes far more sense to upgrade its avionics and EW systems. It's not perfect but im sure cheaper than developing another airframe over 20 years when we need the capability now.
So basically, get War Thunder-trained aircrew and job's a good un.
no backup systems on display and helmet? no HUD, here with sun light the display is barely watchable, great news for their potential clients
Not only does it make the pilots job easier
it makes maintenance a lot easier
Where does google maps goes?
Is all this digital this and that glass cockpit, high res techno pixel stuff really a good idea? It can all be hacked/jammed etc, there is a lot to be said for things that just work and analogue just works, seems a bit daft to make everything digital & more complicated all the time, yes I know sensors etc all have wizardry these days that they need but my point it surely its better to have all of that mounted to an analogue platform so that it all still works regardless of how advanced enemy cyber geeks happen to be?
This might blow your mind but they've been hardening electronics in planes from EMP and EW since the atomic bomb days.
nearly as good as in my Kia
Pro tip: remove the buttons on the knee area…
Turkey will also purchase Ef Tranche4/5 near soon it seems.
the brothers of HAMAS and IRAN? nah nevah
SDR will probs cut orders, Liebour dont like arms....
Hmmm I wonder what they will watch on those screens on long boring ferry flights 😂
Netflix
@@mattgosling2657 🤣🤣🤣
All this situational awareness, mission functionality etc. But can you get the footy on that??😂
Does this depend on where you live?
The HIPS are ok but what about analogue primary flight instruments?
I googled for images of the current Typhoon cockpit, and could not see a single analogue instrument. So the new and the original Typhoon will probably have an equal number of analogue primary fight instruments: 0.
Can you play Doom on an MFD?
Does it come with apple car play?😂
Even less pilots and technicians than yesterday .......
But can you also get Sky Sports on it?
I just wonder the screen is not bright enough
It will be bright enough. They have special hangers where they test this stuff that can be as dark as arctic nights and as bright as the hottest point in a dessert
@@mazking1366 that's nice, as in the video, I cannot see anything on the screen
A lot of military displays have polarising glass, so when viewed at an angle it appears dimmer. I work in this industry the optimal brightness will always be from where the pilot is sat. A few degrees out will change the luminance a fair bit.
Not a single physical gauge, this cant be good
Why not?
@@MrSchwabentier electronics can fail. how u gonna know what altitude, speed,Angle of attack u have when there is a malfunction in system
@@Maxcism if electronics fail the plane will crash anyways because like every modern fighter plane it can’t fly without its computers. It instantly becomes uncontrollable. So it doesn’t matter
So its taken all the avionics from the F35 and incorporated it into the Eurofighter then which is next gen and much better for the pilot to concentrate on flying the aircraft good on ya RAF but if your listening RAF we need more Jets
So what this the new typhoon35
powered by Windows 8
Looks like the F35 display screen.
Why do they make it with a Bow canopy though? Surely a bubble would be better like the F16 for visibility
Maybe they figure this thing will never be anywhere near visual range in a fight?
Of course they are called "Multi Functional *Hand Down* Displays" and not just MFDs or DDIs, classic Britain renaming everything for no reason, almost as bad as calling burners "reheat"
Biggest mistake was not to have naval Eurofighters for the aircraft carriers
It wouldn't have been possible to size it down and Britain was the only nation with carriers when typhoon was designed.
Get to the point fella.
Coming to 3 typhoons by 2045 😂 .
I am sure you thought was 'really clever'... 🤦♂
@@1chish what ?
@@Husker5454 There you go. Simple English defeats you ...
As nice as streamlining the cockpit work flow is, what the Typhoon really needs is a sophisticated integrated Electronic-warfare package like the Germans are pursuing.
Personally, I think the EF is a worthwhile platform for a serious midlife upgrade and we should look at doing what the Army did with Challenger wherein a design study is put together from proposals from pilots (particularly those with experience on other platforms) and industry.
