  • Cliff Field was a legendary figure in the Unlicenced Boxing World in the 1970's and 1980's.
An ex professional boxer, with a huge punch and granite chin, he dominated the unlicenced boxing scene, until an altercation with a gang resulted in him losing an eye, and subsequently his boxing career.

I have heard of Cliff Fields before great story with a very sad end. It's good people like yourself and other podcasters are telling his story . He wasn't a criminal so isn't glorified by some who fantasize about gangsters. He was a straight tough man who was delt a bad hand in life. Someone needs to write a book on Cliff Fields before it's too late. Keep up the good work your doing well.

Great man who I knew well. He had a stint in the old Fairfield’s psychiatric unit in Arlesly in 1994 where he got very depressed plus he was detoxing off the alcohol. I visited him a few times. He had a flat in bluebell hills a very rough area of Dunstable. I lived in caddington just outside Luton at the time. Cliff was a really nice bloke and he’ll be resting in piece.

The story I heard was that Cliff wanted to get out of the Navy to fight pro (as he'd already beaten the Navy, Army and RAF champs) and went AWOL, but then turned himself in, figuring he'd get discharged. After his sentence in the brig was up, he was told to report back to his ship and he said "Youre not going to discharge me?' and was told "if we discharged everyone who went over the wall, her majesty wouldnt have any personnel" and he asked what he had to do to get discharged and was told hitting a superior was the only way, and he allegedly said "s'nothing personal, mate" and knocked the guy out.

I wish more of Lenny's fights were filmed although 70s/80s cameras are shit would still be good to see some of the more talked about fights that were never filmed

Really interesting video Matt. Good insight into a lesser known fighter. Everybody knows Roy Shaw and Lenny McLean but obviously he he beat Lenny and Roy wouldn’t get in with him because of the size difference. Respect then to Roy as well for getting in with Lenny. Well done Matt. Keep em coming ❤

Good vid Matt, looking at the picture of cliff and Joe bugner he looks small compared didn't know Joe was that tall or maybe it's just the angle the pic was took, although Joe was a big man remember he dwarfed Bruno,🥊 👍
