What a great pianist Ronald was, a proper musician, and one of the most genuine souls you could wish to meet. His insights into the music of Busoni is profound. you don't get documentaries like this anymore!
Ronal Stevenson was a teacher at Norton Park School in Edinburgh in 1952. This is where I first met him, I was a pupil at that school. Norton Park was not a Grammar school. We were mostly destined for trade work like Joinery. He introduced me to classical piano and to this day I love it. I asked him to play Chopin's Waltz No7 in c sharp minor and he did I think he was a bit taken aback at me asking for this but he never commented. At that time I didn't realise what a great man he was. He was at The Northern school of Music in Manchester alongside John Ogden and Peter Maxwell Davis.a truly great. man.
Amazing to hear your history with Ronald!! He was my mentor and friend for almost two decades and we often talked about the various jobs he had enjoyed. He was always so humble, he only cared about the art and that people should enjoy it. I hope you have continued so to do!
What a treat to see this. Always loved his 'Faust' side. Now try and imagine BBC 2 commisioning or showing anything like this today. Docktor Faust opera is extraordinary even if it is incomplete. A real visionary. Thank you.
Busoni. A great composer. He was known to his peers but seems to have been forgotten by all but a small band of passionate followers. I love the Sarabande. One of the truly sublime pieces you will ever hear.
It was seeing this documentary in 1974 that initiated my lifelong interest in Busoni’s music. Busoni was a true visionary of music, much underrated and much misunderstood. The same can be said of Ronald Stevenson. Thank you so much for uploading this.
I'll never forget the one time I met Mr Stevenson when I went to Shanghai Music Conservatory to study Chinese music (1985-87) as a foreign student. Mr Stevenson had sent his recent piano composition to the conservatory and for some reason I manage to get hold of a copy and learnt it. During the Masterclass, he told me he was so glad that I had taken my time to learn his piano piece which he had composed specially for that China trip because no one else did. That was why I was given the opportunity to have a private masterclass with him. I was so honoured for the opportunity. I must admit before learning that piece of piano music, I had no idea who he was or how famous he was being one of UK's accomplished pianist & musician. Wished I had taken a photo with him. He was a kind, gentle and patient gentleman. So glad to have met you Mr. Stevenson. May you rest in peace 💐❤️
That was just fantastic! I never saw this documentary when it was shown. I love Busoni`s music but don`t know anyone else who does- except a few composers and performers!!
What a discovery! I had no idea that this BBC2 documentary had survived. It was first shown in May 1974, repeated in September 1976. How appropriate that you uploaded it on what would have been Ronald's 88th birthday!
One of my piano teachers, Isadore Epstein (he was ninety when he taught me, and died shortly afterwards, no coincidence) had studied under Busoni in his youth.
I had the great pleasure of studying with him at Chetham's piano course in his later years. I'm not much of a composer but he was very nice and patient.

Grazie per aver messo in risalto la grandezza del grande Busoni!
One of my piano teachers, Isadore Epstein (he was ninety when he taught me, and died shortly afterwards, no coincidence) had studied under Busoni in his youth.
That's amazing! I would do love to know more.
That's a very distinguished and less-common pedagogical lineage to be a descendant of! :-)
