I started my intimacy with NYC Salsa in the mid-years of the Puerto Rican diaspora in the late 50s and it was an easy jump coming from la Bomba and la Plena. The Palladium on 53rd Street was the epicenter (Got in with fake ID at 16) and in my book the birthplace of Salsa as American Black Jazz, Son Cubano, and and even Jewish Klezmer ala Harlow became integral parts of the multilevel sensation. Machito, Celia, Tito, Tito Rodriguez, Vicentico Valdes, Joe Cuba, Cheo Feliciano, La Sonora etc. paved the way! And it was great, they all were people like us to who you could talk.. I could remember the American Ballet dancers coming in after a doing spectacular innovations to relax. What a club... I saw it all in the coming years culminating with the Fania revivals. It helped keep our culture and music whole in face of the Beatles,/Rolling Stones, Vietnam, racism, etc.
But now, I am totally amazed and taken back by the Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra and consider them as a next step of Salsa´s evolution. Solange Prat is not only hot, a superb dancer, with a voice/movements reminiscent of Madonna but seems possessed by the spirits of Salsas past!!! What I like most that she seems to have also given a blow the machismo Salsa as I remember it. Hope to see more of this orchestra. So far my sharing with others of their videos has had a very, ver positive response especially with old folk like me.
