- Hi All. Please tell me, what is this ax? My version is lower-
AUSTRIAN NAVAL BOARDING AX
AUSTRIAN WW1 TRENCH AX
IMPERIAL GERMAN ARMY PIONEERS' AX
WW1 GERMAN SAPPER'S AX
BEILPICKE TRENCH AXE
This amazing find is a decent example a WW1 German or Austrian Pioneers Ax.They also have been referred to as a Sappers Ax or a Beilpicke Trench Ax
An infantry Ax was first introduced for jaegers in 1896, and the following year it was extended to all infantry units.
32 people in each company were equipped with such shouts instead of shoulder blades.
On the wooden handle of the Axe, as well as on the wooden handle of the sapper blade, marks were drawn by drilling every 5 centimeters.
The small infantry pickaxe was worn either on a waist belt, or was attached to a satchel.
For ease of wearing, a leather case was issued to the trench ax, which was worn on the sharp edges of the pickaxe and protected the equipment and uniform from damage, and the blade with which the pickaxe was worn on a waist belt.
By the middle of the First World War, covers for infantry picks began to be made of metal and woven materials.
I hope you enjoyed this restoration.

Thanks for not grinding out the rust pits on the head. The putting gives the axe extreme wonderful character! I had a whole tool box full of of approximately 30 rusted frozen tools that belonged to my grandfather. Monkey wrenches, pliers, tin cutters, punches, and hammers and axes. I restored all of them and those that had pitting, i left them, didn’t grind them off, just wire brushed them clean and keep a generous coat of oil on them. Love them and respect them! Keek up the good work! Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words. I tried to get as close to the original as possible. It would be a pity to ruin a thing with history.
I love this kind of stuff ut I don't believe he just happened upon the ax while filming. Still good video.
You are right, but everything happened almost the same way.
È sempre bello vedere le cose piene di storia tornare a nuova vita. Bel lavoro, complimenti.
Nice refurbishment, take care and God bless amen.
Wonderful sympathetic restoration well done!!
Gorgeous. I like the design. Kind of reminds me of a war hammer.
Parabéns, você é mestre. Mande um abraço pro Brasil.
Priceless piece of history! Great job! Jet 27 experts dislike what you just did. LOL I guess we cannot win them all🤦🏻♂️
Yeah something unrealistic about the finds, you can leave that part out.
Yup, this kinda thing happens to me all the time.
Just walkin around with my camera running and presto, a rare old artifact of some kind
sticking out of the mud or something. yup, very common LOL.
Make a better video or stop crying about it.
That turned out really nice.☺️
Fantastic
This is just unreal.👍👍👍
Just started watching your vids. Love the restorations. Subscriber for life now
I have a very similar one, only mine has a recess in front for cutting wire
i smiled when he brought out the tiny hammer for the brass pins.
Hello, nice restoration. I'm glad you didn't polish the life out of the head.
I was thinking exactly the same, people polish the heck out of metals to much
That's cause it's an Austrian axe, not polish
very cool bro..good job
Good work!!!!!!!!!!💪🪓
Nice Restoration 💪
Superb! 🇬🇧👍👍
Exelente 👍
Awesome
Wow .! Great video and find..thanks for sharing..Congrats bro ! Best regards from Indonesia
Buen trabajo felicidades
Parabéns pelo trabalho!!! Você é muito talentoso, mas gostaria de saber qual foi o produto que você passou para escurecer a madeira ? Obrigado
Really nice work. Thanks.
By the way, what's the woods used for handle and it's origin..
Why use soft wood for an axe handle? Even if it's only for display it's a sin.
Parabéns

Why do I see people work from the cutting edge first to the back of the blade
Why not?
@@OldRusty I just didn't know of there was a reason or if it didn't really matter.
Not a good restoration in my opinion.
Did you see the gauges and chunks missing from the cutting edge of the axe?
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Maybe too much spare time in your life brother Stamp collecting is a great pastime 🤗🤗🤗
Unfortunately, there is no free time at all ... In addition to the main job and the channel, there are still many hobbies and desires.
Old Rusty good luck bro 👍
DACIAN VALAHIAN AX
Every time I turn on camera, I see UFO on sky
This is how it usually happens.
Displeasure at the annoying premiere video....grrr, it psses people off, yes I know RUclips tells you to increase your reach,..but it upsets the subscribers who made you to begin with
You’re right, I don’t like the premieres either, but watching the video is less than the number of subscribers and this is strange. Perhaps not all RUclips subscribers are shown a new video in the recommendation. Therefore, while experimenting.
Now go put the dang thing back where you found it because it's not yours! Wait....yes it is yours because you put the dang thing there in the first dadgum place!! It's like your lying to us when you do those little BS skits. Get a grip man.
dude, learn to wash your brushes...damn
Fantastico!
Yes, sure, you were walking and filming and suddenly you found the ax and it was semiburied! C'mon!!@
The ax is a paid actor .
Very tastefully done. As an axe lover, I love this. Great balance of restoration, and keeping its feel.
I like that old German axe. That's really cool to find it. Just one thought why the drill hole. I thought you knew that was one of the biggest failures on that axe. It weaken the axe head most broke dearing WW1. In the field it was an all around liability. They would used it a few times for firewood and they broke. Most just left them. Some made it through the war without being used. Most men found different axes in barns to used in France. It's cool you found one. There're hundreds lying in lakes and ponds or some men dropped them after the handle broke. Find and Great job.
Thanks for the interesting information. I did not know that.
Nice restoration. Not sure about the brass pins, won't they catch your hand as you swing it? Wearing gloves will help, but they will cut through gloves quite quickly.
I do not plan to wave the ax. It will hang on the wall as a historical exhibit.
Thats made for skull cracking
Супер! Я себе хочу найти такой
Do you really expect me to believe that you found that axe the way that you did?
How contrived is that!!!!
Just be honest and get on with it and don’t try to be so dramatic!
Good content by the way
Сколко днеи прошол после того как ти иво туда положил,???
Kkkkk essa de sair andando e achar ferramentas e apetrechos teoricamente enterrado e jogado no solo é tão fake como nota de 3 reais 🤣🤣🤣
Oh yeah!! 😊
Do the pins in the handle have a function?
Yes, as a trench depth gauge. They are applied every 5 cm.
@@OldRusty 👍
WoW! Amazing! Congratulations! Perfect! Brazil...
Thank you very much!
Sieht aus wie ein Feuerwehrbeil 🤔🤔🤔
Nice to see this old "vet" get restored to a proud shine! Was it an Ausie ax or another country?
It is most likely an Austrian axe from World War I. Although it was found at the site of World War 2 battles.
What wood did you make the handle out of? Looks like pine 😳
You're right. It was a test version of the handle. I wanted to check how it would turn out to cut it on the CNC from two sides. It turned out fine, so I decided not to redo it, since the ax will be placed in the home museum and it is not planned to chop or dig it.
Old Rusty I wondered the same thing and if you were intending to use it or keep it as a museum piece. Cool find, but nice job cleaning it up. I really like the pins in the handle.
Well done. Cheers
Sw
Awesome!
Hi! Please can you tell me the sizes of those two iron pieces you are removing at 2:40? I have just got my own and I have to make those two iron pieces.

@@OldRusty thank you very very much!

Great restoration, the brass studs are a nice touch
Wow! Штапик разрубил! Мечта а не инструмент!
Why do you put those rods in the handle?
The ax was used for digging trenches. The pins are divisions like on a ruler, so that it is convenient to measure the depth or width of the trench.
Cool
Es muy parecida a un hacha usada por el cuerpo de Alpini del ejercito italiano, picozzino se llama. Era usada como picahielo y también como arma de trinchera en la primer guerra mundial. La forma de la cabeza y el sistema de sujeción es el mismo. Buen trabajo.
Gracias, esto es muy interesante.
Very similar shape like a crash rescue axe used on Czech aircraft made in 1970s
Great find and a beautiful restoration.
Curious about the tiny brass "pins" and
what purpose they served. Thanks for the video.
Thank. For measuring the depth of a dug trench.
Well done mate!
Hi bro 👋👋👋 awesome restoration axe 👍👍👍🔥👌🏽
👍👍👍
👍👍👍👍. Very nice job on the old ax. It is a very interesting design. Are they very common or are they hard to find?
I think this is not a rare pattern. It comes across often at auctions - it means they find it.
I like old axes and hatchets too. I’m doubtful that I will ever find one of those here in the US. Thanks for showing it and for saving it.
@@OldRusty hello, can you share with me please the 3D file for the handle? If you still have it, of course.
@@andreiiovitoiu6084 The 3D file must remain in the project files. I will try to look for it in the evening.

Your video lost all credibility with the phoney...wow! Look what I've found.
Your comment lost all credibility when you revealed you were in fact a whiny little douche.
Amazing, knew exactly where to look by the water.fake BS.
Intresting not a lot of people find Austro Hungarian or German WW1 stuff and restore it
