    Transcript:
Hi, this is Jessie with Sharp Edges and I sharpened clipper blades and shears for a living.
And today I wanted to go over a question that I often hear, which is, “how do you sharpen clipper blades?”
Now, while this video is not meant to be an instructional video, it will give you an idea of what goes on with sharpening blades.
Different sharpeners use different techniques for sharpening. But the one thing that all clipper blade sharpening has in common is a machine called a Clipper Hone.
All clipper blades have a slight taper in them that makes them work properly with the teeth rubbing against each other to cut properly.
This plate has a slight taper, a slight rise in it to impart its taper on the clipper blades to ensure they work properly.
Sharpening them with wet stones shorten the life of the clipper blades.
On this plate, I have coconut oil, some people use lard oil and other different types of adhesives with 180 grit.
When I get the blade, I disassemble them using a screw gun because I do a lot of different clipper blades a day to save my hands.
After disassembling a clipper blade, take the components apart, and wipe them down before sharpening.
Turn the clipper hone on, take a magnet and grab one of the blades to sharpen.
A laser light helps keep me centered on the wheel to get the perfect taper or hollow ground.
Demagnetize the blades to get rid of magnetic charges caused by using the magnet to sharpen. I'll remove the burr off by running their blades through my wire brush.
When we reassemble, we take our parts, our socket, and our spring, put oil on the back rail, front rail, or across the front.
We'll put our cutter blade on, we'll put a drop of oil where the blade guide will go.
I picked that up, pinch it, flip it over, line the holes up, take the screwdriver, get the first screw, put it in until it is tight and then I back it off a little because I want to be able to adjust it after I've got it all together. Do the same thing to the second screw to make sure we can still adjust the set later.
It is very important to have the proper tension on your clipper blades. Use a blade scale, to keep it in the proper operating range which is approximately 3 lbs.
    Finally, test it.
If we've done our job, this will actually cut this fur. If not, I'm gonna look really silly.
    Let's see.
Well, looks like I get to keep my job for another day.
    Anyways, thanks for watching.

Can you sharpen ceramic blades the same way??
What state are you in?? I'm in New York and need my clippers sharpened (instead of.buying new ones) for my Andis pro clippers with ceramic head... I was just gonna order a new clipper head that all metal as I know that can be sharpened.. what do you think ? Or could I mail this to you and get it done for less than $30 as it's only $28+ tax for a new head.. thank you in advance..
    P.S.
I looked up sharpening clipper blades and you popped right up.. I hope that helps your channel grow . 😊😊

Sorry I'm just now seeing this. ceramic blades can be sharpened. It’s a slightly different process. I do sharpen ceramic also. You’re welcome to send them to me. I’ll provide a link to my Mail and Sharpening page. Blade sharpening is eight dollars plus whatever shipping is.

How important is it to wire brush your blades after sharpening on the wheel? I have been using the same sharpening guy for years and I always notice when using my Andis t-outliner they drag or won't cut thru fine hair. My guess is after he sharpens, he doesn't remove the burr from the blade.

    • @sharpedgesok
      @sharpedgesok  2 месяца назад +1

Burr remove is very important. Anytime you sharpen anything a Burr is created. It's the excess metal from the sharpening process, and can significantly affect the cutting performance. Even causing the blade to not cut even though it is sharp.

Does magnet matter and how much pressure

    • @sharpedgesok

Sorry for the late response, YT doesn't notify me of new comments. the magnet is just to make it easier to hold the blade, some people don't use a magnet but I'm more comfortable using one. I use approx. 2 pounds of pressure.

I'm not understanding how the disc being slightly domed affects the grind of the blade? I get that the blade needs to be ground a certain way to correctly cut, but I don't get how that machine is achieving that result. Do you have any insights or resources for me?

I purchased a sharpening machine that was mounted in a wooden box. The machine has no marks on so I don’t know who manufactured it. The honing disk is 12 inches in diameter and has a 1/2 inch hole to mount on the motor and one set screw to hold it in place. The disk needs to be replaced. I said all this to ask if you could help me figure out where to get a new disk? Thank you. I would send pictures but I don’t see any way in comments.
