My job as operations superintendent from 1992-1998-it's amazing to see this since I'm literally looking at a picture of me working all those years ago.
There is copper piping running underneath the cement with refrigerant that keeps the ice at a certain temperature all the time. Rubber mats are laid over the ice to prevent the coolness of the ice to contact the wooden court. The court still gets cold, but not ice cold.
