- Development of the Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank (MBT) began in 1970. It was just a couple of years after a previous Leopard 1 entered service. In those days a clash between NATO and the Warsaw Pact was possible and the West German army needed a well protected tank, which would be superior to the models introduced in the Eastern Block. First prototypes of the Leopard 2 were completed in 1972. In 1977 Bundeswehr initially ordered 1 800 of these main battle tanks to supplement and replace the Leopard 1. A number of advanced technologies and design solutions of the Leopard 2 were taken over from the joint German-American MBT-70 program. The MBT-70 was a revolutionary design, however due to cost overruns, technical problems and different requirements West Germany withdrew from the program in 1969. However available advanced technologies were reused on the Leopard 2 and American M1 Abrams tanks. Fire control system, armament, ammunition, transmission and tracks of the Leopard 2 are similar to those of the US M1 Abrams main battle tank in order to simplify maintenance.
This MBT has a welded hull and turret. Composite armor of the Leopard 2 tank is similar to British Chobham. It offers good protection against armor-piercing rounds and anti-tank guided weapons. Ready-to use ammunition is stowed in a separate compartment in the turret bustle with blow-out panels. This improved survivability of the crew. The tank is fitted with NBC protection system and automatic fire suppression systems.
The Leopard 2 main battle tank is armed with a fully-stabilized Rheinmetall RH-M-120 120 mm smoothbore gun. Vehicle carries 42 rounds for the main gun. A total of 15 ready-to-use rounds are stored in the turret bustle, while the rest are store in front of the hull by the driver. The Leopard 2 normally uses two main types of ammunition - the APFSDS-T armor-piercing rounds and HEAT-MP-T multi-purpose rounds. The APFSDS-T round penetrates around 450 mm of rolled homogenous armor equivalency at 2 000 m range. Since its introduction some generations of APFSDS-T rounds were developed and used by the German army. Germans estimated that their Leopard 2 tank could penetrate frontal armor of the Soviet T-72 tank at a range of 2 000 meters and frontal armor of the T-62 tank at a range of over 4 000 meters. The HEAT-MP-T round is effective against both soft and hard targets. The gun of the Leopard 2 tank proved to be very accurate.

Vehicle is powered by MB-837 Ka501 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 500 horsepower. The Leopard 2 can be fitted with a deep wading kit. After preparation it can ford water obstacles up to 4 m deep.
Variants:
Leopard 2A1, has improved armor protection. A number of components were improved in order to make them more reliable. Leopard 2A2, fitted with improved sights.
Leopard 2A3, fitted with improved communications equipment and improved parking brake.
Leopard 2A4, fitted with new digital fire control system and improved turret with more armor. It was the most widespread version of this tank. Its production commenced in 1985 and ceased in 1992.
Leopard 2A5 is a radically improved version. It was introduced in 1990. By 1998 a total of 225 German Army Leopard 2 main battle tanks were upgraded to the 2A5 standard. At that time the Leopard 2A5 was referred as the best main battle tank in the world.
Leopard 2A6 is another radically improved version with improved armor protection and a longer 120 mm/L55 gun. It has longer range and is more accurate than the Leopard 2A5. This tank is in service with Germany, Canada, Greece, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.
Leopard 2A7 a proposed upgrade package for existing MBTs, which includes additional armor, additional cameras for long-range surveillance, advanced command and control equipment and some other improvements.

I pointed out that's not the case (LeoII AX and MGCS programs both arent really secret in that sense). But it DID have secret stealth fighter programs.

When THW engine starts and you move hell breaks lose and you can only comunicate by the onboard com system. When your tank shoots its OK its much louder When the tank beside you shoots. Hard to discribe...
@@marcelwachter1764 It is strange. I also noticed. Even when you're standing next to the tank outside, a shot isn't very loud. But when you are a few meters away, it is a blow that you feel in your chest and go through your whole body.

Ever wondered how the Leopard 2 kept getting heavier but the performance remained the same with the same engine? MTU notionally always says the engine is 1500 BHP, but a friend of mine who is in the Swiss army says that when they dyno tested their Leopards, it was a lot more powerful than 1500 BHP. German engineering indeed.

Same here. Loved being on the Abrams while I was doing my stint as a tanker in 2/66 AR 2nd ADF. Because we were the only combat unit from the U.S. in NORTHAG our sister unit was a German unit and they had the Leo2. We got to do quite a bit of cross training with them and, if I had to go to war on anything but an Abrams it would definitely a Leo. Great tank.
@Joshua N. Ajang best guess I can give is they went with the 105mm as opposed to the German 120mm because, at the time, Germany had not yet got the semicombustable cases quite "right". Provisions were made in the M1 turret to mount the 120 at a later date. The US HAD a 120mm gun prior to the M1, it was mounted in the M103 heavy tank. I believe it was the same gun that the Brits mounted in the Conqueror, or it was very similar. Both used separate loading ammo. Brits had one loader, we had 2. The US MBT70 used the same gun as the M60A2 and the M551 Sheridan. The MBT70 project was, intriguing, but the technologies weren't mature enough at the time. Many features an ideas of the MBT70 did make it into the Abrams, and possibly even the Leo.

@@innouniversedoineedthis challanger 2 didnt come out, way long after leopard 2 came into service in the Wehr at the time when the Leo 2s roll out the production line the MoD still bickering how they counter the Leo 2s. By that time the British still could learn and study the Leo 2s so they could make their future Challanger 2 tanks better than the Leo 2s, but eventually its mostly equal. British could defeat the Germans in wars but they couldn't defeat their engineers in designing armored vehicles and MBTs, deal with it.

Countries buy Leopards instead of Abrams because it's much better deal. You can get latest version of Leopard or inferior export version of Abrams and Leos are cheaper.
Ally Agreed, leopards are cheaper and are much more versatile. They have a lot of modular upgrades that can suit each countries demands.

If you are talking about the guys working on and in the Leopard 2A4's in the video, then those guys aren't German, they are Austrian. On most of the footage with the 2A6's (the ones with the Balkenkreuz on the turret sides) you see that they are often still aren't wearing helmets in the footage.
No helmet. They only protect vital organs.

One of the most exciting pieces of engineering! It was interesting to operate along them, especially when one German Leopard hit my IFV... Amazing that this is my highlight of my conscript tour in the Dutch army during 1989-1990 :-)

It's amazing being a Polish tanker, I've been driver of many cold war Soviet tanks when in service, Challenger, Abrams, Leopard and now got a job after my grandfather being designated tank driver in Warsaw tank museum driving T-34s and IS-3 with few panzers mixed in

As a 12 year old on a school trip I got to start a Leopard 2 since I was in the driver seat at the time they wanted to drive it out. I still remember the cramped but comfortable seat and the magnificent rumble of the V12 diesel as it sprang to life. I won't soon forget it, even though it was almost 25 years ago.

You should have mentioned some of the Leopard 2's other features:
- It can dive through about four meter deep water with additional diving equipment (which is basically just a foldable tower over the commander's hatch to provide the tank with air and a rubber plug for the canon)
- It can climb vertical objects like concret walls or blockades with a hight of about one meter without additional help
- It's complete engine can be changed with the help of an amored recovery tank in less than 30 minutes - even on the battlefield! (Fun fact: The german amored recovery tank 'Büffel' shares the same body with the Leopard 2 and can change it's own engine running on batteries during the change)
- The diesel engine can run with lots of different types of fuel: As long as it's fuel consists of 60 % diesel, 40 % can be any other flameable liquid like ethanol, gasoline or even vegetable oils
- it needs only half of the fuel on the same distance compared to the gasturbine of a M1A1 Abrams (and it can run with many different types of fuel)
There's lots of useful features the Leopard 2 has over other modern MBTs! But in the end, I guess a key point on which MBT is better is still the skill of it's crew and they're opponend.
I think it's quiet unlikely, a Leopard 2 will ever face against an american, british, french, chinese or even a russian modern MBT on the battlefield so they all have to be considered as 'quiet equal' with every tank has it's pros and cons depending on the situation.

Great video but Sweden doesn’t actually use the leopard 2A4 anymore they where rebuild to ingenjörbandvagn 120, scraped or they where sent back to Germany.

Maybe they just produced enough of their version of the 2A5 (with upgraded armor protection to the standard 2A5, as well as different electronics and grenade launchers on the turret), called Stridsvagn (?) 122. Anyway, if they wanted to and still have the facilities, the Swedes can produce more of that tank, as they, just as many other countries, got a full production license for it.
They should stay with the Leopard 2 as the name why change it to Strv?

One thing that should allways be remembered concerning the Leopards (1 and 2): The German road system. That gives the Leopard 2 its insane 1500 hp engine - Tiger of WW2 was clearly underpowered with a thirsty petrol fuelled engine - that mistake should not be repeated (and it most certainly wasn't - there is no such thing as to much horsepower in German thinking).
The German idea behind the vehicle was: A Warsaw Pact break through could not be prevented as such, but the heavy tanks could have so much speed, that they could be brought to the crime scene before the russians could sort out their logistics.
Those tank units that were not engaging the enemy's offensive would instead simultaneously counterattack where the enemy was thinned out to provide a concentration of force at the break through point.
Basically it was meant to concentrate the bulk of the enemy against the british with their exellent gunnery and unusually well protected Challenger 2, albeit with limited operational mobility.
Thus in effect crushing the russians between the german hammer and the british anvil.
Now, that changed after the cold war. First problem was that the old Warsaw Pact nations had become the new Nato countries. They had (and have to this day) a shitty infrastructure and a major roadbuilding programme is still in the making. The Baltic States are getting EU-funding to provide the road structure - mainly for civilian use. It has been quite entertaining to follow the political and administrative wrangling.
Basically the Baltic States have been very much preoccupied with their internal priorities - and shortage of funding. The EU and their sir Humpfrey Appelby's have begged (on their knees) the politicians of the three nations just to reach an agreement to apply for the road - write on the back of an envelope, just get the signatures! The hammering out of the details: Leave that to the beurocracy in the EU - that is what they are there for - and they are very good at it. Furthermore: The funding IS THERE.
Now in 2014 the invasion of the Ukraine happened, which made the gloves come off.
The road building in the Baltics (and Poland) would not be finished in short order.
The main problem for the heavy tanks is, that there are LOTS of rivers in Europe that are not navigable and the bridges over them are not strong enough to take tanks. The rail system is a hassle and an old fashioned BOTHER - so that will not be finished in time - no matter what date. Rail-systems timetables are like planning for the second coming of Christ. Christ will be reborn to us - eventually!
But if you don't CROSS the rivers and use the plenthora of ports along the Baltic coast - then the situation is far from hopeless. Now sidestep into my bailliwick: Danish defence planning.
The polish problem of containing the russians. Well drawing from experience. Germans and Poles form a division with the Danes. Something that was as credible as the immaculate conception of the Mary. But as far, as I can tell: It works! The poles indubitably hate the germans; but not quite as much as they hate the russians - and with a mediator to smooth out ruffled feathers and the germans hefty wallet - things work out.
That did not solve the Baltic problem of transporting the heavy tanks. Well, here we are not contemplating using road or rail for the major part: We use ferries! We get the british to lead one brigade in Estonia, the canadians to head another in Lithuania. Then we get the Norwegeans and the Dutch to contribute a combat group of batallion size - we put up a batallion as well. Keep the pesky Russians from interfering in the Baltic Sea - their navy is rusted to the piers anyway.
Point being: They are all armed with Leopard 2! Except the british - of course - they HAVE to be difficult.
Now I will move out from the scope of Matsimus RUclips. Basically because we allway end up talking MONEY. I will try to explain, why there is money enough! Lots of it! And why Germany is able and willing to foot the bill!
I admit it is a difficult matter; but bear with me.
Now it does not take a rocket scientist to understand why roads and railroads further economic growth! Put simply: It provides cheap access to cheaper labour, which lowers production cost, increases competition which cuts into monopoly profits and lowers prices.
Now every business cares shit about others - that is a fact of life. The consumer cares shit about others - that is also a fact of life.
Now: A road opens up both a market and production - and lowers production cost, moving raw materials and parts to the cheapest producer. At the same time it puts money into the pockets of the workers and producers that make them able to purchase. If you think Latvians don't like to spend money? You are dead wrong!
Now if you simultaneously increase consumption and production the economy grows! I.e. the GDP grows. If each country contributes the same fraction of money to infrastructural projects Germany ends up with the greatest bill - simply because it has the greatest GDP. Now that is not a gift, because infrastructural projects will increase the GDP of the countries recieving the new roads/railways - and they will pay because they will have to pay in proportion to their GDP!
I hope I clarified a point or two about the EU and their defence! If You follow me this far - You show more comprehension than most above Your pay grade!

@@gioaxe4538 Vlad calls the shots in Russia, and is quite open about his wish to expand into the old Soviet sphere. The Balts and Poles are not really keen on that. Vlad is also undermining NATO, individual countries in Europe and not least the US, to further his ambition of expanding Russia and a return to the great power state. He also percieves liberal democracy as a threat that needs to be destroyed.
That will be a no from me on all those counts. I too like Russians, the ones I know are warn, friendly and hospitable. However, as long as they choose to live with an oligarchy keeping up an autocrat, they are not really our friends.
Agreed almost with everything. Just not about the part that Poles hate Germans. I don't know where do you live but u are wrong on that point...It isn't time after WWII and many Poles rather working with German because they are straight forward not as Brits are. On the other hand- hate Russian as they kept us under long-time occupation- true to that.

AlexSDU the ADF used a modified version of the Leopard 1A4, in the ADF. Can’t quite remember what we designated it as, but they were 1A4 models of the Leopard 1.

@Matsimus The Revolution/Evolution armor package (now known as ADT) has been applied to Singaporean and Indonesian Leopard 2's. The package is slightly different between the two countries' tanks; neither carry the ROSY soft-kill aps, and the armor modules are of slightly different configurations.

I was working in Germany near one of their main bases and these things were everywhere. Very impressive, more so in person. Video just doesn't do it justice.
Also, I REALLY loved the idea behind the MBT/KPz-70 and I feel it's a shame they didn't go very far though obviously the Abrams and Leopard eventually became far superior to the MBT/KPz concept. That hydropneumatic (sp?) suspension was so ahead of its time and its mobility and firepower were unparalleled with that awesome 155mm gun/atgm launcher. Not to mention that lovely 20mm secondary!

It'll be even better had they removed the frontal ammo stowage in the unlikely event of a penetration the tank wouldn't go up.

I know, they'd have to redesign the turret and put it all the ammunition in the turret like the Abrams (yes I know the Abrams has a few hull stowage rounds with blow out panels). This is basically the deciding factor between the Abrams and leopard 2 debate for me.
I'll always go with the Abrams because I'll feel a whole lot safer in it compared to the Leopard 2. Had the leopard got rid of the hull stowage I would go with it every time.
@@sargesacker2599 I think people are making too much of the hull ammo thing. The frontal hull is probably the safest place in the whole tank. It is less likely to get hit than the turret, because tanks usually fight hull down and it has strong armor protection.
Nobody calls the Merkava a death trap because it too stores ammo in the hull.
You could even argue that the Merkava's hull store is less safe, because it is at the back, where the tank has less side protection.
Any source on that ? I am geniunly curious.Especially how it compares to say a T90M, or the latest Abrams version.

Hinds are no threat since Leopards are escorted by Gepards. You could say a KA-52 would get rid of the Gepards with SEAD but thats another topic^^

He mentioned the A6 very briefly, but completely left out the A7, same with the Leopard 2 PSO, even though it's camo is the sexiest of the bunch.
peter müller Yeah, but the 2A6 is one of the most important upgrades because of the new gun. The 2A6M and 2A7 did a lot for crew protection, especially for mines.

@@eifelerplanespotter653 na, the A7 has the L/55 and the A7V has the L/55A1. The A7 was the planned upgrade but it was decided that it need some minor upgrades besides the whole A7 package. For example they gave the gunner now also a 3 gen infrared sight, all variants up to the A7 had still only the gen 1. But with the A7V they fixed it.

I'm about 5' 6" (168 cm), however being also a Commando my shoulders and hips have become broad, so subsequently when I was working in RAEME EMESYS, I had the opportunity to visit the Tank Maintenance Unit in Bandiana, North Victoria, while they had the Leopards 1Bs and was very impressed until I had the opportunity to try the Commanders seat, which turned out to be a very tight fit, for a person who could climb to the Hanger roof, with just hands, and fast too, but they did look good and training the main gun was almost beyond impressive :-)

Nope Leopard 2 has survive Kornet shots, the Leopard 2 in syria were not destroyed by hostile fire, it was destroyed by Turkish Airstrike to prevent them from being captured. Abrams has not survive a Kornet

I just working on my leopard 2a6 (1:35) modell and you upload a video abaut the leopard, what a luck :D
If I recall we had a Leopard at Ft. Knox in about 1977 or 78. It was in one of the maintenance shops. The first XM-1 Abrams i ever saw in about 78 or 79 rolled out of the maintenance yard onto the road drove about a 100 yards and throw a track. Myself and another NCO in the scout unit beat feet before we got shanghaied by the crew to help put the track back on we saw that movie before.
I was on Ft Know in 1977 but left in April of that year. We saw XM1 on the way to Ft Hood while I was on Ft Polk.

Politically that was never going to happen. Hell, the Bundeswehr barely got away with naming a Barracks after Field Marshal Rommel and basically had to make the case to the Bundestag that it was honoring his WW1, interwar sevice, and his loyalty to "the German people" due to his alleged involvement in the Hitler/Nazi party assassination plot/coup which ultimately caused his death.
naa, modern mbts have nothing in common with these old slow heavy tanks.
tigers where breakthrough tanks, designed to punch a gap in the frontline, for the faster and waaaay cheaper pz3 tanks, and go back for maintenance and medals^^.
and they where perfect in this role.
but they where not designed to fight as mbt, over a longer time. thats why so many of them broke down.
if you choose one of the german ww2 tanks, the panther 3 would be a better name.

My fav Top 5 tanks Leo at first place follow by Abrams,3rd place go to K2 , M60 with latest package up , Challenger 2 . At least from more modern tanks.

@troll oracle No tank is invincible, and most tank battles don’t end up like Asal Uttar or 73 Easting. But Turkish forces lost Leopard 2A4s by dozens at a time against a ragtag ill-trained militia. That is different than losing 1 tank.
@troll oracle It's not the tanks fault anyways. Classic Arab crew disaster. Neither Leopard nor Armata can win a war with stupid crews. Things are different when they are commandeered by Russians or Poles.
