On the eve of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Dr. Sean J. McGrath revisits Luther and sees what remains of his project for today.
    "Human being is non-being".
Before the existentialist and structuralist thinkers of the twentieth century, there was Luther. Deploying arguments that would later be used by Kant, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Derrida, Luther arguably helped inaugurate modernity by tearing down medieval catholic dogmas and shifting the focus to the individual.
Sean J. McGrath, PhD, is a professor in metaphysics, classical German philosophy, phenomenology, hermeneutics, and psychoanalysis.
