In this lecture, Dr. Christian Smith discusses some of the work of Wilhelm Reich, including a critical re-reading of his main theories in light of the crises in the world system today.
Reich's work has fallen out of favour with the traditional psychoanalytic community; his preponderance with the body and later 'orgone' theory struck an unscientific chord with the psychoanalytic orthodoxy.
But if the body is the 'envelope of the soul', its treatment as something auxiliary by conventional therapies would seem to miss something, and Reich's understanding could then be said to have hit upon an overlooked insight.
Christian Smith, PhD (University of Warwick) is currently writing his first monograph - on Shakespeare's influence on Marx - and works as a somatic therapist.

I deeply appreciate this lecture. I find some delightful connections between Jung's idea of 'shadow' and Reich's work re: blocked energy. When shadow is experienced as 'energy' without labeling it 'good or bad'; not rejecting it but holding it with felt sense love; it transmutes into the elements of our essential nature which we express in connection.
Profound analysis
If shadow is accessed while considering the presence of authority is gains a label, the following logic would further the idea of a proper authority that synthesizes shadow in a positive light i.e christianity. Christianity mobilizes shadow to strengthen the light of christ, and directs primordial sexual energy into a meaningful relationship guided towards marriage and faith.
@@3mm3t Exactly. Now, I've been working on making the Integration work move from the theoretical to the embodied archemical transmutation. Integration happens when we embrace all shadows in an embodied manner. Grateful for my teachers beyond this dimension.
@@3mm3t But, it can't be accessed through the 'mind' or thought form. Very few are able to do this integration and it is not for everyone.
@@edfell3 are you aware of kierkegaard work? Your sentence reminds me of his "double movement" proposition. Where faith cant be accessed through logic, but only through relation to the absolute.
It is too bad that it is so difficult to clearly understand what is going on while one is young and in the middle of it all. As an ex-flower child I appreciate the thought that has been put into resurrecting Reich's work and putting it in the context of what was going on in the world at the time he was doing it. I despair because I did try so hard in the past but the situation has only worsened. Thank you for the work you are doing.

Excellent lecture. I just wish he would had gone deeper in Reich’s theory of the Orgon. It’s his main contribution. He even beat Einstein intellectually with it.

@@herbreverb5083 From what I know, Orgon was a mystical element of sexual energy that is released when you orgasm. He claimed to have built a machine that could capture it I think. Complete pseudoscience and definitely nothing that challenges Einstein.

I don't think Reich was into Hegel's and Marx's dialectic mysticism but influenced him to later go against it?
Might seem an odd connection but I've been reading reich with an eye towards football/soccer as a global phenomenon and cultural repression in movement variability. Similarly to dance, the constraints upon movement which a culture organizes around are present and visible in the styles of play which emerge in different cultures.
Big Picture Soccer well a similar example would be how homophobia effects the backs of those who would rather use their backs than perform a whole squat while lifting heavy things. Restriction of movement, right? But we have to define as perhaps a physical symptom of a phenomenon.
@@timdevolldable yeah that might be an extreme example but not all constraints are negative. Nikolai Bernstein realized that organisms needed constraints to deal with the redundant degrees of freedom. If you think at an abstract level you can see some similarity between the language and forms of movement in culture
Daniel stern calls these temporal patterns vitality affects. They're amodal meaning they can be perceived across any sense modality. Musical terms like crescendo or staccato give you an idea

You could do research about somatic therapy, it is widely available and currently practiced (from my understanding ). I have been curious about it myself for awhile so it reminds me to look into it, myself .

When we are gone I'm sure so much innovation will go on. We have cronyism not capitalist. Asiatic people are different in the way they want to live and I want to live as a western European woman our way. The only thing you can do when being distroyed like in Iran turning to strict islam our people who always treat women equally must turn to a strict tough dictator because other wise we will be distroyed. Me 2 realm indicates more a psychological problem than a judicial query.
We can have a man that is dominated by a woman, as these events materialize on the men mind, he can invert his personality and desire vengeance towards women. A man dominated by his women; indicates that the origin of the unbalance can be related to his parents. since the mother had parents as well, the answer can be on the grandmother, rather than the actual grandson. A dominant grandmother can bring a dominant daughter, a dominant mother can bring a weaker son and a dominant daughter. once this dominant daughter marries a dominated man, the result could a be a subconscious reaction from the dominated men towards women. His daughters could inherit the dominant side of his mother and repel the masculine side of the father. Since he is a weak man, the process of growth can lead to inverted roles of the family and the youngest daughter can become the replacement for the weaker father. The younger daughter might have inclination to be a man rather than a woman that she biologically is, as she follows the sights of the family unharmonious realm. Therefore, to inquire properly and understand the issue Psychologist & philosophers could participate on the investigation. It is a lot better not to oppress neither to be oppressed. Oppression demands a lot of energy and defending yourself from an oppressor also demands a lot of energy. Better used the energy on productive and beautiful projects than with incomprehension. I suggest tolerance, however not open-endedly. Rape in many ways is strange and does not make much sense now in our civilization. Love making forcefully is not love but frustration, making love to someone that does not want you, is the converse of pleasure, pleasure exist when the two blends into one, and the pleasure of one is the pleasure of the other. The women reached pleasure is men’s accomplished pleasure.

Ukraine didn't exist when Reich was born. I much prefer Jung to Reich when it comes to psychology. Reich was a great scientist, but a shit psychiatrist. His whole Freudian repression nonsense and the over sexualization of ever move -- he is awful. Shame because he was a great scientist.

This sounds like poor man's Qigong... Qigong practitioners say that blocked Qi is the source of illness.. he says the same, only using his own terminology... there's little point to reading these modern authors because they are too lazy to read the ancients, who already developed their theories and practices better due to centuries of accumulated experience.
Or maybe the fact that Wilhelm Reich was working at a time when little to none of these Chinese works and practices had been been translated and introduced to the western world had something to do with it. Also sometimes ancient wisdom needs to be taught in the contemporary parlance in order for it to understood by modern students. I think it arrogant to immediately scoff at teachings that seem to be retellings of older knowledge. Sure there's nothing under the sun but for every person each day is new.
@@noahrand you have a point to a degree, but there was plenty of esoteric knowledge circulating in the West during the time that Reich was among the living, so let's not pretend that he couldn't find any information. Furthermore, shouldn't these contemporary teachers who know more draw some parallels, instead of introducing these ideas as a novelty? I mean, if the Buddhists were stifled by conventional morality, the Daoists weren't. They explored "energy/qi/prana" through sexual as well as non-sexual practices in fricking ancient India and China. I think the reason for ignoring this is a smug attitude among many leftists, because they hold the view that modernity is superior to anything that happened in traditional, patriarchal societies, as if history is some linear process where things collectively progress from a point of lesser understanding and application towards some grand socialist Utopia, while in fact a ton of knowledge is continuously being lost and recycled to a greater or lesser degree and it was all occurring in patriarchal societies, but most of it was esoteric/underground, i.e. having nothing to do with wider social application. Qigong and yoga practitioners have explored this stuff for thousands of years. The only real progress made by modern science is in trying to make these discoveries more available to the general public.

@@fgh6526 i guess that's where we differ. i believe for the most part that knowledge should be set free. i do agree that we should acknowledge the past and not get caught up in thinking that what's being done is uniquely modern or some such drivel. But it's important realize that every new iteration brings something to the table. Also plenty of latter day lefties have critiqued the teleology of progressive world views though i agree with you that many don't or won't or just haven't. Anyways I think Reich's works have plenty of value although maybe not much in the area you're looking at.

The correct word is "awake" (as in awakened like Jesus or Buddha) not "woke". Wokeism is the gender ideology pervading current society as Reich describes in "Sexual Revolution and it's role In Totalitarianism and dissolution of the society".
