I was working on a ranch west of Phoenix and we were hosting a cattle auction. As a teenager the extra cattle just made extra work for us. this old guy came up and ask about the cattle and how we cared for them. we were polite and answered his questions and he was a friendly sort as ranchers tended to be after he was about 30 feet walking away it dawned on us it was John Wayne. We didnt run after him out of respect. The Next time I saw him I was a cop at the Airport in Phoenix and I started to approach him when this very pregnant young lady ask him for a kiss. He blushed and was a little embarrassed but he said sure and gave her a little kiss waved and walked on and I didnt approach him out of respect again... Great men have great hearts

Pat Wayne never had a chance to shine in his acting career because he was overshadowed by his Dad. He was seen as "John's boy" whenever he was onscreen with his Dad. I was focused not only on his good looks, but on trying to find facial similarities.

Great interview. I was behind Patrick in a movie line in San Diego years ago. I introduced myself and struck up a conversation while waiting for the movie to start. Mostly talked about The Quiet Man, where he had a small part and I had visited the location in Ireland. A real nice guy and a true gentleman.

Duke and Patrick saved my life. That's the lymph node surgery that I had with the test to determine how many nodes were cancerous. 25 on the right side were removed in 08. I went through chemo and radiation and have recovered pretty good. Going on 8 years now with no recurrence . Strange sometimes how things work. I've always been a big John Wayne fan.Over 50 movies in my library. Did not know about the cancer work his foundation has done.

Hi . I feel extremely disappointed that I have discovered this wonderful interview today. As a somewhat older man :), Even though I am completely aware and in sync with the workings of online technology, I must admit I tend not to have a lot of patience with regards to negative responses to what I am truly looking for. I am a huge Duke admirer. Even though I sometimes disagreed with his political views , I always admired his honesty and his acceptance of a valid argument that does not concur with his own. I have read everything I could find with regards to the Duke, his career and his family . One of my favorite books is the book John Wayne written by one of his former wives Pilar. If one can ignore some of the emotional issues, it is truly an interesting window into a difficult part of a wonderful Man’s life. For me, Patrick was and is a “Chip Off The Old Block “. I have seen all the movies when Patrick appeared with his father. And Patrick’s Sindbad is one of my most enjoyable Family Movies that I have ever seen. I promise you that during the festive season Patrick’s “Sindbad” will be shown in the UK in several channels. It’s a Boxing Day late afternoon adventure and journey into the world of fantasy. Patrick’s death scene in Comancheros is still an emotional and somewhat uncomfortable scene to watch. But the Duke’s reaction is pure class. But the “Dear Pa...” letter scene is a joy to behold. I have two more scenes of Patrick with his father that often runs through my head like a cinema promo trailer. The first is that wonderful scene in the last real of the searchers . Absolutely wonderful. The second is from the Alamo. As Patrick rides into the Alamo to give the bad news that no help is coming . The thigh slap of his glove , the quick drink of water from the bucket and the ladle swiping away to discard the unwanted water . Directed by John Wayne , to his son Patrick performing a typical John Wayne performance that makes a point by action rather than dialogue. Many critics have slaughtered scenes as these in the Alamo. For me? It’s absolutely wonderfully beautiful. Thanks very much for posting this interview. Dave

John Wayne was just about always any of my fellow Baby Boomer generation's hero. Although I had no idea, until hearing these details from his son, Patrick, just how complicated and involved his movie rolls were, wow, what a great actor he was! And, let us not forget that it was none other than John Wayne's own daughter who uncovered Obama's fraudulent birth certificate scam; proving that he was indeed NOT an American and therefore not eligible to even run for the American Presidency! Mr. Wayne was a great American, a wonderful actor and great roll model. Thank you for being my hero and giving an entire generation of young people a higher goal in being better American citizens, you were and remain The Best!

Patrick Wayne if you should see this; I want you to know you were my first "movie star crush" Both you and Christopher Mitchum made quite the impression on a young girls heart. You know I love listening to you speak of your Dad, I love watching his movies, and listening to him speak in various interviews. I used to dream that some how he could be my Dad, you see my father was a raging alcoholic and so violent that it was not uncommon for the police from the small town closest to the farm where we live made almost weekly visits. It wasn't until after my Mom was able to divorce him in the early 70's that he got sober, it is sad that most of my memories of him are ugly and scary. He passed away in 1973 from an accident on a job in my home town, I was 10 years old. That job was the only job he had during my ten years of life. Though they were divorced in early 70, my Mom scraped together the money and matched my older siblings donations and together they paid for his funeral. I always pictured you Father as firm, but loving. I could never picture John Wayne hitting a child in the name of violence, or a woman. A possible spanking when deserved but nothing like what my siblings and I had known from the man who was our Father. Bless you and your family, that they may carry on the good of Mr. John Wayne.

We use to live on Balboa Island very close to the Wayne Estate just across the channel from him. One time my brother and I were on our paddle boards coming back from the Orange Julies shop (on the Newport side) where the ferries go from Balboa Island to Newport on the main channel. By accident my brother Von hit the Dukes Minesweeper Boat and he came out of the wheel house yelling at us to get away from his boat. Von was 14yrs old and I was 11.
    That happened in 1973.
My grandparents lived in Costa Mesa and my grandfather played Golf with John at the Country Club and John talked my Grandfather into buying the same car but it was brown.
    Ahh such childhood memories.......

I don't know anything about Ethan in recent years. It's probably unfair of me, but I assumed he was the one behind selling all of those things that belonged to Duke. Before Michael's death, he was the one in charge. Michael was Duke's oldest child. Michael was the producer for Batjac for some of Duke's later movies. I don't know what happened after Michael died. Maybe Patrick didn't want to take over, and at least one of his sisters was dead by then, so maybe he and his remaining sibling...
