Microdiscectomy: Possible Re-Herniation After Surgery

  • I am nine days post op. Last nights pain returned to my left leg in one of the same spots that my pain was prior to surgery. I have to wait until Monday to see the surgeon, it is Friday today. I chatted with him on the phone today and there’s a very large possibility that I have re-herniated my L5S1 disc. I would love any advice from anyone who has been through this before!

    In February 2023, I underwent an L5-S1 surgery. Prior to the surgery, I had a conversation with my doctor about how the remaining wound on the disc would be managed post blade incision. The doctor assured me it would heal within 14 days. I had read that natural tears on discs often heal on their own due to their small size, but surgical wounds might be larger, raising the possibility of re-herniation.
    I took great care not to lift any heavy weights and refrained from work for a total of 60 days after the surgery. However, even after 4 months, I started experiencing shooting pain in my leg, ankle, buttock, and my back posture had also altered. Unfortunately, the surgery also introduced a new issue - numbness in my feet. This entire experience has led me to the realization that I may have made a wrong decision by opting for surgery. It feels disheartening to have spent money on this procedure and consumed so many medicines, only to find out through a recent MRI that there's a new herniation on the same disc.
    Due to these circumstances, I've decided not to return to the same doctor. I've lost faith in the scientific evidence behind this procedure, as it seems the doctor never disclosed key aspects, such as what a laminectomy involves, the duration of medication use, the formation of scar tissue, or the potential loss of muscle strength in the insertion area over time. The doctor's assurance made the surgery seem straightforward and uncomplicated, but it appears there might have been past cases of unsuccessful outcomes that were kept hidden from me.
    Since returning to India from abroad, I've turned to natural Ayurvedic treatments for relief. This includes methods like hot oil therapy, hot baths, hot water treatments, and the use of natural herbs. I'm experiencing some improvement, but I must admit that I'm still grappling with lingering fear and mental strain.
    This entire surgical experience has put me in a difficult situation. I want to emphasize to anyone considering lumbar surgery to thoroughly ponder the potential for failure and the subsequent steps that might be needed. Please don't rush into a decision without considering all the aspects and potential outcomes. Your body's well-being is too important to treat as a mere learning experience, as I've unfortunately learned firsthand."

    I'm reading all comments and I'm terrified that I can't find any positive outcome after surgery. Seems like people have to go back for another surgery because they having re-herniation. I'm just about going under surgery in two days since I'm having such a constant pain I see no other option but go under the knife.

      James Dean we will never know... the pain ended up going away as normal so we did not do any imaging. However, I’m one year out now and I did reherniate again 3 months ago...and the MRI shows it... pain, tingling, just not as severe

    • @megant3530
      @megant3530  5 лет назад +1

      James Dean it’s optional. I’m not having another surgery because my pain is level 3 at most and not consistent at all. I can run, bike, snowboard, etc. so I’m just working on getting my core strong. 90% of people with herniated discs don’t end up needing surgery. Our bodies do a good job healing- but some people really need it to move past the pain. Good luck!

      Hi Megan.. Glad to hear you are doing well. Just underwent the same procedure 10 days ago and I still have pain down the leg.. It is intermittent but also consistent depending what time of the day it is. I'm feeling right now as you did in this video and am wondering if I reherniated or not. My question is how long after this video did the pain start to decrease and then completely go away? 1 week, 2, 3,? Thanks for letting me know.

      Ali Abid I am 18 months out, I actually recovered just fine after this video. However I re-herniated 8 months post op while snowboarding again! I am now living on my reherniated disc and my symptoms are so minimal it’s not worth surgery. You can watch some of my other videos that detail how much pain I was in at that time, but now the worst I get is a numb foot every once in a while and level 2 pain if I sit too long. Not worth another surgery.

  • @lauriekun4433
    @lauriekun4433 6 лет назад +12

    I suffered from severe unrelenting back pain, sciatica pain and severe weakness in my left leg for a little over a year. My symptoms were progressively getting worse by the day.
    3 months ago I had a microdiscectomy L5S1. The weakness in my left leg was gone right immediately after surgery. My pain was approx 40% better and I was feeling great! Approximately 1.5 months after my surgery the severe unrelenting pain came back. Including the pain shooting down my legs and the weakness in my left leg. I iced my back and rested for a week straight hoping the pain would go away. Icing and resting always helped relieve the severe pain if I over did it after my surgery. This time it didn’t help relieve the pain. It was back with a vengeance and it was worse than before the surgery. I feared I had reherniated.
    1.5 months after my surgery I had an MRI which confirmed I reherniated my disk. I was devastated. Thankfully 6 weeks ago I had a second microdiscectomy. My neurosurgeon recommenced I also have an interspinous fusion L5S1 using a titanium spacer to help absorb impact and take less pressure off of my disk so that I wouldn’t reherniate again. Unfortunately not much of my disk was left after I reherniated so he injected stem cells from my bone marrow into the area where my disk is. In 3 months the stem cells will fuse my bones creating a fusion at L5-S1. At 6 weeks post op I am still in a great deal of pain. Some days are better than others. Sciatica pain comes and goes. I feel much better now than I did before having this surgery. I am very careful not to bend, lean or twist and wear a back brace to prevent from reherniating.
    I pray that all of you who are suffering from back pain or recovering from back surgery are able to live a pain free life again. Recovering from this back surgery has got to be the most painful, challenging surgery I’ve ever had to recover from. I’m still a long way from living an enjoyable pain free life again. What’s getting me through this difficult recovery is by staying positive. I count my blessings. I focus on all of the positive things in my life and I am grateful for all that I have. If I could give any advice to help people get through suffering from back pain and/or recovering from back surgery, it would be to stay positive and count your blessings both big and small.

    After suffering 3 years of progressively worsening pain, I had a microdiscectomy 5 weeks ago to remove a large herniation from my L5-S1. The opp went well, and i felt like a new man for the first 4 weeks post opp. No pain at all. I was talking it easy, but i could walk, sit, and even started driving 3 weeks post opp, just for short distances and on the recomendation of my surgeon and physiotherapist. At 4 weeks post opp, i started to get small feelings at my S5-L1 area, not painful at first just an indication something was happening down there, and now at 5 weeks, several times per day i am getting a sharp pain around my L5-S1 area when i go to sit or lie down. I'm devestated, and very worried i have reherniated the disc. My physio comes by today, i'm hoping they can give me some advice, as i am not due to see my surgeon for another 4 weeks. My biggest concern is my job, for the past 6 months i have been mostly immobile and working from home as a result of this issue, and i am just back to work now after taking 5 weeks off for the surgery and recovery. My employers were ok with this, thinking post surgery i will get back to business as usual. If i have reherniated, i have no idea how this my effect my employment. Megan Thompson I did the resurgery and am no on 4 weeks postop 2nd surgery but all together now 10 weeks postop. 2 surgeries!
      Thats almost insane to experience, it depressed me then, but now waiting for the 6 weeks mark to go to PT.
      I feel stiff, do walks, small walks. Thats the best for the disc to heal according to my surgeon, who did more than 5000 of these procedures.
      I still feel numbness in my right leg, needles and pins in thighbone and a stiff back that I didnt have prior to surgeries.
      The numbness and legpain is subsiding, so is the backpain. It takes a lot of time to heal, thereisnt a quick fix for the healing time. Every patient heals at his one time. Comparing, as we all do is useless, because we are all different people. I am 65, that’s older as you are probably😉
      so thats an argument for quicker or slower healing! Hope your doing well! Give yourself time to heal and put your impatience aside! I am sure you will get better. Greetings, Martin from the Netherlands

      Sorry I don’t come on much anymore! I’m 2.5 years out if surgery and pretty much fully recovered. I’m snowboarding, hiking, and everything. So I would say, even though it’s really scary when this happens, have faith that you will get better someday! It’s so hard to keep that faith and trust, but don’t beat yourself up about it. Reherniations happen, and if you listen to your doctors and follow the directions you’ll get better! Good luck ☺️

      @@megant3530 So did you end up having a 2nd surgery? And if so, was it another MD or a fusion?
      Any pain still?

      Did you had the Re-hernation or it was a scare?

    • @megant3530
      @megant3530  6 лет назад

      Tiempo Real thank for sharing! I’m hoping it’s just some scar tissue or that it’s a small enough hernia toon that PT corrects it. The surgeon is quite certain it’s a smaller piece that has reherniated so we are starting PT for 2-3 weeks and if the symptoms stay we get an MRI since that will be the only way to tell. How long did the pain take to go away with you?

      Hi, my name is Jeico, actually, since the day I bend down like 5 days or so, then everything was fine again, I really hope you feel better, I know is the worst pain ever.

      Jeico, that is good to hear! I’m still having a lot of tingling in my foot, but the pain in my buttock is getting less and less. Maybe I will have the same luck as you!

      My Pillow Guy I did reherniate it, but my body adjusted. The pain went away after a few days. I would just call the surgeon. Mine was great and helped me understand what was happening. Now I’m 14 weeks out and back to regular life! Happy healing

    I just had surgery for my L5 pressing on S1 on September 21st just found out last week I re herniated the same disc. They don’t want to operate again because my pain did go away after steroid and I start physical therapy next week, did your disc move out of the way? Or it’s still fully herniated but the pain went away? Because I nervous and terrified to feel that pain again, but since I’m so early in the healing they think there’s a better chance the disc could move off the nerve. I still have numbness but it’s not as bad and the pain is fully gone. Just was wondering what all you did to help yours.

    • @megant3530

      Danielle the pain just went away, I guess I’m lucky! Most people who herniate their discs don’t end up needing surgery to begin with, so on some re-herniations it’s the same thing. At least that’s what my surgeon told me. Good luck!

      Megan Thompson my pain has gone away, I still have slight numbing but physical therapy is helping take it away. Thank you so much !
