What To Expect 1 Week After Surgery Laminectomy & Microdiscectomy For Herniated Disc L4-L5

I had a hemilaminectomy and microdiscectomy for a herniated disc at L5-S1 which was pressing on the sciatic nerve and causing pain into the buttock and leg along with numbness and weakness into my right foot.
Thankfully the surgery provided immediate relief of the pain!
Overall, I have not had the same pain. I have had some tingling into the foot which may be expected.
It can take months for the nerve to heal so the tingling may take awhile to go away and the strength in the foot will take time to come back.
My physician has ordered me to limit sitting to 30 minutes, 3x per day along with no bending, twisting, or lifting more than 10 lbs to allow for the spine and tissues to heal.

I’m having surgery on Tuesday the 25th. I’m terrified!!! L5-S1. It’s been a miserable 5 months so I’m hoping this surgery will help. I want to be able to sit!!!! :-(. Good luck to all of you having to get surgery and a speedy recovery to the ones that have had the surgery ❤️🤗
I had exactly the same surgery for my L4&L5 herniated disk 4 days ago. I am fortunate that the result is great. My pain and the mobility issues got greatly improved right after the surgery. There is still some sourness and stiffness on my back which may take a few weeks to completely go away. I hope people who decide to do the surgery will get the good results too.

I’m about to have my surgery at the end of this…I watched an animation video and it scared the crap out of me…lol…

I’m 9days post surgery on my l5-s1 still taking painkillers and slowly trying to walk, fatigue and loads of pain but hopefully in the weeks/months will improve better, ive had a back issue for 4 years before finally having surgery. Speedy recovery to everyone

@@MsHeatherV1 im curious how both of you are doing. Im a little over 2 months post op. L4-S1 fusion, discs removed and replaced with spacers to spread my spine back apart where it should be, parts of vertebrae removed with rods and screws installed. Im still in a ton of pain. For some reason the last couple weeks have been rougher than the weeks before. The first week or so after surgery the pain was excruciating. Haha

Thank you for sharing. I’m getting ready to have this same surgery at the end of the month and I’m not shy to say I’m nervous as hell. I’m what you call a gym rat and the fear of not being able to workout again doesn’t sit well with me. No pun intended. Hopefully I’m able to find a support group while I go through recovery.
Make sure you check out all the ways to rehab including proper nutrition, sleep and activity to heal right

Had surgery yesterday and the pain was minimal - 1/2 a Norco was enough. Today is definitely harder and upped to the full pill dosage but it’s SO much more manageable than not being able to stand - you’re right about mornings being the worst!! Trying to brush teeth and hair, do basic makeup, shower… Those were the hardest things by far and I’d have to lay down between just like you mentioned. Thanks for your multiple videos on this topic - looking forward to Monday when I’ll be a week out! 😊
I'm so glad you have minimal pain! Be patient with the rehab process and be sure to slowly integrate movement and exercise. You've got this+

If you havent had surgery yet, the biggest thing i can recommend is to research the surgeons in your area. I cant stress this enough. I had a botched back surgery 2.5 years ago. I had herniated discs between L4-S1. Both discs were buldging, herniated, deteriorating but they said the L4, L5 was the only one bad enough to need surgery. I think they did that so they would have the opportunity to do another surgery. I found another surgeon at a large hospital in the city and went to them. They removed both discs, replaced them with spacers to spread my spine back apart, removed portions of the vertebrae and put rods and screws in to hold everything in place. Recovery has been brutal and painful but it feels like theres room in my spine now for the nerves. The sciatic/radiating pain is still there but ive gone 20 years like this while working on cars for a living and picking up construction jobs on the side. Research, talk to people that have had back surgery with surgeons in your area. I can only speak from my experience but none of the injections or anything worked for me or even helped in the slightest bit.
I had a surgery for l5 by microendoscopic surgery 10 days ago and i am fully recovered and i dont have any pain now. I also walk 7kms a day from last 4 days and i am following the formuly no bending , no lifting and no twisting.
Now after 4 days i am going to surgeon for removing stitches from my back

Good evening....will i be able to climb stairs after my op. I live in an apartment on the top floor...having surgery done in two weeks.

Your presentation certainly makes me feel hopeful and relieved about what to expect. My biggest concern is besides the success of it all is living alone in a home with stairs and no help. I have had a LOT of burning pain in my groin and shooting down the front of my left leg. I’m 2 weeks postop now…although the surgery DID fix the neurogenic claudication of the left leg…the pain IS SERIOUS…I can’t really walk around much before the fire starts down my leg. Upon sitting the pain will usually disappear after about 5-6mins. My follow up appointment is in 2 days, we’ll see what he says then…

Great video. Just a quick question. You mentioned that the surgeon didn't want you to sit down more than three times for 30 minutes each. (Per day.) So what did you do for the rest of the day? Stand? Walk? Lie down flat? Was sitting in a recliner allowed? I'm going to be getting a similar surgery soon, so thanks for your help.
I was either laying down flat or in a reclined position or standing mostly. I worked from my computer with a desk I got that allowed me to lay down in bed and work and I could also transfer it to a counter since it was adjustable. Good luck with your surgery!
I had the same surgery and im on week 2 post op and I am still using my walker, I am unable to walk without it. I am still using a back brace, I am unable to sit and shower without support. I am just wondering if this is normal??? I am still have pain running down my legs :(

How long did the numbness in your leg last for you?
I had numbness before the surgery for about 3-4 months prior to the surgery. After the surgery the numbness was gone pretty quickly. I currently have no numbness but still have weakness into my foot as a result of nerve damage but that's slowly improving

Did a microdiscectomy and laminotomy little over a week ago, my back is sore and my right leg has numbness and tingling running all the way down to my toes, it sucks 🤕. Is that normal or I'm just taking long to see signs of recovery?
Hey....do you still feel the tingling in your toes or is it gone and if it is gone what have you done to treat it?

Oh...m so bro is there any improvement in your tingling, as I also had the same surgery 3 weeks ago but I still feel tingling in my right foot and I am not able to stand on my right toes alone
@@DeepakTiwari-lc5xt I still have tingling and i have a slight improvement but it get worst if im moving around too long (per long stand, bending, twisting etc.) Additionally, I end up doing an emergency surgery (csf leak repair) after my initial surgery a month later. I did a mri recently and it appears that I have a small csf fluid cyst around the area (l4/l5) in my back. My surgeon say that and my nerves also contribute to my tingling. It sucks man
Did any of you try an epidural steroid injection first? If so, what were your results?
I did try an epidural first but the relief only lasted about 2 days
