  • Apatani Tribal Women has a shocking story behind their face tattoo and nose plug. The painful tradition was followed in the olden days to protect the Apatani women from getting kidnapped by the tribal raiders who would kidnap them and marry them forcefully. Until they got these done, they wouldn't get accepted or married in their own society. Women were made to do this once they hit puberty. More of which in the video. We went to Hong Village in Ziro Valley to find out the stories.

I will try to explain my best.
19 Tattoos. Old grandma mumbled a bit here "Chinyu(soot) ho kii" means she tried to say Tattoo was made from Chinyu(mixed of pig's fat and soot) as you mentioned in the video.
17 Hong village is also the second largest village in Asia.
38 Tattooing was not to make themselves look ugly but to Look Beautiful.
25 "Lecha" was used to wear during hunting and war. Made from some plants' fibers. I don't think that was made from Animal like Bear's hairs.
14 "Pila Sudu" is not a pressure cooker for Apatani nor for the tenderness of the meat. It's used to make Pila(one of Apatani cuisine) by slow cooking especially during fests. It takes approx 7 days to cook the ingredients.
15 "Dareke" and upper one is "Gyai" "khai" and "Khappo"(other village version) and Keho= Keha.
37 He was confused to tell the exact. Myoko festival is celebrated in a 3 rotational manner among villages 1. Hong, 2. Hari- Bulla and 3. Diibo-Hija. So "Babo" is not brought by the same Village every year. 8:15 "Lapang" a socio-religious platform. Not only made for Myoko fest but also for Murung festival and clan gathering and meetings. PS: Women are prohibited from climbing on it. 😅
47 "Nago" sacred ritual hut. A priest chants inside there with monkey skull during Taper Liinii(Lwnw).
47 translation 😅 always having photoshoots, even in paddy field and her children sees her picture in social networks and ask her why are you always getting photoshoot. 😂
21 better One Village with different Clans.
40 There's a "Babo" in the house too. There were nos. of Babo for the nos. of males in a household
