  • It runs! But you'll never believe what the last piece of the puzzle was that made our 1974 Yamaha DT250 finally start, run, and idle. Sometimes it's best to go back to basics...
    After setting the timing, rebuilding the carb, replacing the ignition coil, wire, and cap, we were dead in the water trying to figure out what was causing our bike not to start.
    After trying EVERYTHING, we finally get it to run.
    Next comes the fun part, building our DT250 into a vintage motocross (VMX) racer.

    The fantastic troubleshooting abilities, and patience, shown here are skills that everyone should have, in any job they do, not just mechanical stuff.

      Thank you! Sometimes I wish it didn't take me so long to diagnose things, but then I remember that I'm relatively young compared to some of the old timers that have been doing it for 25 years

      @@two-cargarage Process is the most important thing. Speed comes next. I'm not all that experienced and I have learnt that rushing you can f#$k things up real quick. Not great when you are dealing with parts that are expensive, or impossible, to replace. I hope you do more vintage Japanese stuff

    Do not neglect to clean the resonator,drill out holes in the diffuser,decarbon and drill 3/8 hole through the center of diffuser,I did this work to my 1975 dt 250,great results.

    Super helpful. I'm currently working on a 72 dt250. cleaned/lined tank, new petcock, rebuilt carb, changed the oils, put it together and had trouble starting. Literally today I'm buying some new plugs and will try the BE-9 to see if that works. fingers crossed. Great job on your videos. Very real and honest

    Great work. Love the DT250! I had a 72’. Currently have a 74’ MX80. This video series is seriously jelly and really well done. Also, what an excellent shop you have built! Nice to see.

    I’m working on a 73 dt3 250 right now and I’m wondering about the baffle. Are they all supposed to have them? Mine doesn’t have one

      I think many people took them out for a louder tone.

    I clean the exhaust I pour gas inside and let it burn less outside mess

    Huh what about hooker header think that could clog up? it was full of oil I dumped it out but I couldn't get it started I replaced seals all gaskets put top end on now I might do this to help get her started. I also heated top end parts get old oil off on my woodstove. Exactly same way I feel hope mine starts lol yeah right. I was in same boat coming to finish hear. I replaced points condenser cleaned everything up new seals oring gasket s everywhere oem carb rebuilt air filter oiled new coil and exhaust gasket I have hooker header though really hope to be starting it in next couple of days. Good luck with it

      Good luck! I don't think the header could really clog up, there's not much carbon buildup in that part of the pipe. Sounds like you're looking all the right places, don't forget to also put a new spark plug in!

    Where do you buy your parts? Besides partzilla. I have a 1975 suzuki ts400 very similar to this. I’m looking for an air filter can’t seem to find one anywhere. Please help..

    1. Chemically dip pipes to clean them, unless you want chunks of carbon entering and damaging the cylinder. 2. Its NOT a "defuser" its a silencer. 3. Please do NOT work on anymore bikes. 4. After cleaning and rebuilding thar carb you did not think to install a new spark plug?

      3. Well that's not very nice. It's a hobby, sorry! And it's a hobby where we all, at all ages and skill levels, can continue to learn with experience.
      2. It doesn't silence the bike, so I respectfully disagree.
      1. Have you ever "chemically dipped" pipes? How would one get a vat big enough and fill it with a harsh enough chemical to eat away 40 years of carbon build up? The fire process works great. And generally, the cylinder doesn't suck in air from the exhaust so the likelihood of "chunks of carbon" entering the cylinder is slim to none in my opinion.
      I don't want to debate, but instead just share my thoughts. Again, I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

    Yeah 2 strokes eat plugs. Does that bike have points? even worse on plugs. You may have a bad condenser. Points beat cdi in my book. They dont just die 50 miles from home. Have you done a leakdown check?

      Yea I threw a new condenser in it and realized it was eating plugs like crazy. So I bought a bunch of the autolite ones (guys on the forums seem to have the best luck with them), and gave them to the owner of the bike to swap a fresh one in before each race.

      Yeah Im not a ford guy but autolite seems to make pretty good plugs.
