Casio Casiotone MT-400V keyboard (1984)
One of Casio's most unique early experiments in the home keyboard arena, at its heart the MT400V has some fairly standard Casiotone rhythms and voices, but someone had the bright idea of giving the user control over the analogue filter envelope (attack, sustain and decay), cutoff and resonance. As well as applying this to the voices, you can also filter the rhythms and auto accompaniment. There's a stereo chorus with adjustable speed which can be switched to act like an LFO modulating the filter, an effect which Casio quite accurately describes as Waw. Add in bass and chord variations and analogue drums and you've got a great little lo-fi synth and groovebox.
All sounds you hear in the track were made using the MT-400V and recorded to a DAW, where compression, EQ, and reverb were added as required. Individual kick and snare drum hits were sampled from the rhythms in order to have more control over levels in the mix, and the Disco, 16 Beat and Bossa Nova patterns were then recreated in the DAW.

Nice to see a king of the mt series in good hands!
:D Thanks Marcin. It's a king indeed.
Man this synth has tons of cool sounds in it
It does!
I was looking for info about this keyboard and I found your video. I realize that, in the proper hands, it can offer very interesting possibilities. I enjoyed your demo and specially your music!!
Thanks :) It's a fun keyboard to have around.
A beautiful classic track from the 90s nice work you made my day!😎💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
You're welcome. :)
sounds great
:)
It's amazing with just a little production what you can get out of these keyboards!!
Yes, many of them don't need much - just a dash of reverb makes a big difference. This one is particularly satisfying, I have to say.
you took my first and beloved synth to another level. Amazing work!
You made this sound SO DANG GOOD. WHAT A VIBE 😱✨
Thanks! :)
I love that sound, hard to find but underrated.
My first keyboard! I´m from Brazil!!! Sensational tune!!!
Thanks! That's a great keyboard to have as your first
A little treasure.
I was looking for one of these for a while. Finally got one at the right price...
@@alfonsemusic Hey! How much were you able to snag yours for?? I'm trying to figure out if the $50 price tag on one by me on OfferUp is worth it
@@cptawsme I would say definitely yes, assuming it's in reasonable condition. That's less than I paid.
Great tune! Brilliant video. What a talent. You rock. You pop rock! Great keyboard too.
The ADSR on that keyboard was a nice feature. It actually modulated the drum section too! Way cool for its era!
Awesome tune too! Good work, awesome editing too! The pedal was a nice added touch with the sounds! Great depth and great ambiance too.
Thanks :) It's strange it was such a one-off (aside from it's CT equivalent). Perhaps it's a keyboard only fully appreciated with hindsight.
Man great showcase.
That really sounded nice and really shows the tone palate.
Thanks. I really like the old-school analogue vibe you can get from what's otherwise a fairly basic keyboard.
whoooaa creamy stuff!!! that analogue percussion + filter are just dee-lish :PPPPP Great playing + editing too, keep it up man!!!
Thanks! :) Would have been cool if Casio had taken this experiment further and put the filter on more 'toy' keyboards of the era.
great demo! just put me hands on one of these recently, for some weird reason i didnt know it existed
Strange how these things pop up out of nowhere sometimes... The same has happened to me with other keyboards. Thanks for watching :)
so nice!!
Thanks Gastón :)
Love the wawah sounds - and the earworm melody 💛
Thanks :)
Found one at a thrift for $20. I do love it.
Missed a DX 100 at same shop. Flinched at $40 price tag. Went home to check the Net, ran back over a no and a lil lady had it in her cart. Wished her well, but that near miss still plays on the mind
@@darrelldourte9455 Ouch...! Still, you got a nice price on the Casio.
@@darrelldourte9455 damn! Sorry bud, I came to youtube actually cause there's one posted up for $50 about 30 mins from me. Trying to figure out if it's worth it!
@@cptawsme Yes it's worth it. Check the demo's on youtube
Great job, and really nice track, truly reminds me 80s era.
Thanks very much. Glad you liked it :)
@@alfonsemusic way punchier than 80z riff. Keep up the good tunes. I have that unit...in storage.
Criminal, I know.
@@darrelldourte9455 at least you've hung on to it - definitely a keeper in my book
You certainly deserve more views/subs.
Thanks Matthew :) It's growing, at least
suoer nice demo !!! makes me want this !!!
It's a great buy if you can find one
Wow wow wow
My best 5 euros spent ! great demo !
Awesome! Great job!
Thanks! :)
Pretty dang cool if I say so myself! Good work buddy!
Thanks Matthew :)
Totally cool !
Mozart of our era 🙌🏾✊🏿
:D I'll get out my powdered wig.
Finally snagged one off eBay!
Nice! Worth the wait
I like your bass-lines.
Thanks Steffan!
I just bought some of your music on bandcamp
Thank you! I just saw that come through and thought I recognised the name. Big thanks for that contribution. I'll spend it wisely...!
Really great for all kinds of Afro-pop/funk!
I love listening to your videos. I have never heard any of the tunes elsewhere, are these your very own compositions Alfonse?
Thanks. Yes, they're mine. I started this series of videos with the aim of seeing what I could write with just the sounds of one keyboard at a time. It's good to give yourself restrictions sometimes. You can also find the music on Bandcamp, Spotify, etc
Awesome❤
Great work, this has to be the most fun MT. I especially like the information text about instruments and effects as the songs play. Having watched the vintage playlist, I am listening to it while I study ;) Can I please ask what software you use to produce your videos and apply text?
Agreed, this MT offers a lot of entertainment. Thanks for watching!
I'm using Final Cut Pro on a Mac and currently I do all the titling in that for speed of editing/amending, although you can potentially get slicker results making .png files in Photoshop or similar and using them as a layer over the video in Final Cut.
@@alfonsemusic Thanks. Are you up for a challenge? Assuming you are in the UK?, are there any particular model of mini keyboards that you would like a loan of? I would love to see new vids.
@@WeeInnovate-uk That's a very cool suggestion, thanks! I am in the UK. You mentioned the MT-100 and PSS-380/90 before - would be interested in either of those, if you're willing?
I now have new videos scheduled, aiming for a regular one per month plus extras as often as I can find the time.
@@alfonsemusic ok, sure thing. The MT 100 is fully working now. The 380 will be later in the year (key fault), but I have some unusual ones as well, I can send you a list. How to PM off youtube, do you have a fb account?
found it. pm on the way
I just saw one of these in a used electronics store in Japan for 19,800 yen, Roughly $180.00 American dollars. I wanted to get some info to see if it was worth buying. I might have to pull the trigger after seeing this video. Thanks!
You're welcome! $180 is slightly on the high side compared to prices here when i bought mine, but if it's in good condition and especially if it has the original external speakers (mine were long gone) then you're unlikely to regret it - a lot of fun.
Bro I need this please god answer my prayers
hey Alfonso. I bought already PSS 570 after your video. Shall I buy this one as well ?
Far be it from me to encourage filling your home with gear, but I would highly recommend this one...
@@alfonsemusic It's too late my friend. Before I even read your reply, I completed the purchase. I will have it in a few days. :D
That’s analog!
80s vibes
I've just managed to get my hands on one of those, yet the keys feel very strange and a bit sticky, how do your keys feel ?
That's a familiar description. Just a little resistance before the keys pop back up - and a few are audibly creaky on the way.
@@alfonsemusic yeah, that seems about right hehe...still has great sounds.
Do you happen to know of any way to losen them up ? I've searched far and wide on the internets, haven't found anything related.
@@pedrovaldetaro I'm not sure. I'll probably open it up sometime and take a look, but I can live with it for now. Hope you get it sorted out.
@@alfonsemusic think I'll do the same, thx!!
@@pedrovaldetaro I have exactly the same issue with 2 of these. FANTASTIC sounding and fully playable but the key action on both MT400v units is just as you described, a little bit squeaky and slow to return. Sounds as though the key action needs cleaned and some fresh lubricant to bring back it´s "springyness" This is vintage gear after all we ought to give these bad boys a bit of TLC after all those years ;-) please report back if you give it a go!
First and only time I played this keyboard I was about 12yo and I have no idea what adsr and filters was and works.
I was similarly mystified by the FM parameters on my PSS580 (attack? modulation?), but it was a great chance to experiment.
Excelente música con tan solo ese teclado
Had one, sold it, regretting it. Now the prices are going through the roof. At least I still have my HT700
Yeah, it took me a while to find one at a price I liked. Hanging on to it now...
No way, how much did ya sell it for? Someone is selling one by me and I'm on the fence!
Gran Turismo 4 vibes
