- The Casio MT-400V, released in 1984, is a small keyboard with 49 mid-sized keys, 8 note polyphony, 12 styles, 20 tones, vibrato, sustain/reverb and stereo chorus. It's main feature is a filter control with ADS and LFO modulation. It uses the NEC D930/931 ICs which were used for many Casio keyboards between 1983 and 1986. There's also a larger version existing, the CT-410V.

Recently bought one to go with many other keyboards of this era. Living out my boyhood memories again but this time with all the keyboards in my room at the same time instead of one at a time. Love these keyboard and the 400v is a particularly special one.
That "Wow" effect is just like what I say to myself the entire time watching Keen on Keys. What a beauty this one is! And each quirk explored to perfection 👌🙏

Great memories. My brother and I used to own one when we were teens. I do remember some of the rhythms and chords now. I loved to play with cutoff and resonance applied to the chord as it made accompaniments sound "modern" in the late 80s. The device didn't age well, taking moist in a basement after moving to a new house. I tried to repair the potentiometers but they were still making too loud cracks when touched. It was also possible to imitate the sound of a sea shore with noise+cutoff. Pretty simple and efficient. And the small keys were well suited to kids.

Gosh, even before you did the proper demo, I could tell there was a lot more texture in your BGM!
I suspect that Casio had a bunch of excess high-end analogue ICs/designs leftover, and since they knew they were moving to digital synthesis soon and probably couldn’t sell analogue to big spenders anymore, they probably included them in this keyboard to use up the inventory.
Like, the various virtual patch cable options for where to route the filter, how to manipulate the filter, etc are all pretty dang impressive, even today in some regards (albeit of course modern instruments generally do it more or better). Also the chorus!
As always, your little demo ditties are always a treat. A bunch of them reminded me of Game Boy, NES, or Mega Drive soundtrack melodies in lots of ways, probably just happened to be in the same key as them with similar tone textures :)
Now I want to try to replicate some of these sounds on my big boy subtractive analogue synthesiser, heh. The CV synthesis definitely has an interesting texture all by itself.
Lastly, much like your video on that surprisingly capable FM synthesis consumer keyboard, this is also one of the most accessible rundowns of analogue synth filter basics I’ve seen! Not too much technical terminology, not too little. I’m going to send this to some friends who have an interest in synthesis but tend to get lost in the jargon!

This is the second video I've ever watch about a synthesizer, the first being a video of yours on a newer Behringer synth and while I don't know much about anything you are talking about its so fascinating. I love that you cleaned and restored the case, keys and switches. It looks beautiful.

Since I have both of you experienced Casio owners here,
Do either of you understand the mechanism of the BFC-1 filter control interface? I want to find a way to substitute the controller with either an alternative breath controller or a foot pedal that can be used as a seperate potentiometer somehow to allow filter sweeps and playing with two hands.
I am wondering if Yamaha's BC2 Breath Controller will work...

It's interesting that Casio just brought back the "V" on the new CTS 1000V which I have waiting in the box as soon as I finish some of these other projects.

Got an MT-85 on eBay last year after binge-watching all of your videos, rekindling my interest in vintage keyboards. Later in the year I got a Casio CT-450 and Yamaha PSR-6 for insane deals. The MT-85 (which I can't really find much about online) is definitely one of my favorite keyboards/synths that I own, but it's so hard to not go out scouting an MT-400V, which I've just found out about!

Actually, the Bros Chaps used both an SK-1 and CT-405 (essentially a full-size MT-65), so that's probably why this keyboard sounds so familiar :P

The filter definitely adds a lot, those pads (especially the sweep one) sound like they're coming from Poly-800. No wonder almost all the classifieds market it as "analog".
I agree - it reminds me a lot of the Poly-800 as well.
Apart from the digital oscillator it's analog. Also this digital oscillator sounds more vintage-style analog than todays true analogs like korg minilogue or arturia microbrute / minibrute.
We played the heck out this keyboard back in the day!! I have several recording of it from 1984-85. If we could post photos here, I would share me playing it from that time period.

Okay, this was my real first synth. Got it as a gift for Christmas. The speakers made a cool noise when hit with a drumstick and I played them. Oh yeah, loved the filter

Casio sollte wirklich mal ein kleines MIDI-Rackmodul auf den Markt bringen, welches all diese alten "Tischhupen"-Analogsounds beinhaltet (inkl. Drums). Die Dinger würden sich wie "geschnitten Brot" verkaufen. Vorschlag für eine der zukünftigen Folgen: Bontempi ES bzw. AZ-Serie, Farfisa DK-Serie
Ein Bontempi Model ist diese Jahr auf jeden Fall dabei.

I'm so impressed that you explained the paraphonic filter behaviour, and the detail of how each part of the filter influences another part. I have several videos on my channel using my MT-400V in my playlist: Classic Casio Keyboard Covers. I probably can't paste a link here so I would be very happy if you have time to listen. I do also have a BFC-1 breath controller but it was a bit disappointing and hardly changed my usage of the little synth.
Is the Casio BFC similar to Yamaha's BC Breath Controller?
@@kenzieprice6745 In that you blow into it, yes, but the two are not compatible, and the Casio BFC only controls filter cut-off, not volume expression.
@@althejazzman Thanks Alex. As you know thr BFC-1 is pretty hard to source so I have been trying to brainstorm ideas to substitute for it. They seem very similar in mechanism so maybe it can be modified?
I'm planning on playing around rigging up a foot expression pedal to control the filter bur I wih I knew more about the BFC-1 and how it interfaces with the MT-400v.
Absolutely amazing, I'm so grateful for these extra thorough videos. These casiotone MT series have been a love of mine since borrowing a friend's similar one (it has "eq" rather than filter and is brown) Honestly the passion also goes back to childhood like for many of us. I've have (and adore) the MT65 which I find astounding as to how versatile and inspiring the small amount of seemingly comical patches are - but in combo with the funky reverb, sustain and vibrato can produce tones that I simply cannot find anywhere else. The 400V popped up today in my local music shop & this vid helped confirm that I was "trippin" when I didn't immediately grab it off the shelf haha. Getting it tomorrow for defo.... a question I have had for a while is what level of modification could be done if at all - eg could midi be added? Not talking "circuit bending" as that's not really ever pleasing to my ear

Your review videos are SO perfect obsessed!! I’m actually struggling to choose one from MT45,MT65& 400v.. prefer the look of the first one, but wonder the sounds- does MT65 have all the sound presets of the 45?& did you mention it sounded brighter? And does 400v included most sounds from MT65? - I look for dreampop,shoegaze & lo-fi kind of sounds, etc love the pipe organ sound w sustain &vibrato in your MT45 video, and just wondering does the other two included the same sound/vibes to choose? Many thanks x
I'm pretty sure this keyboard was in an episode of Marble Hornets? IIRC Tim's grandma just had one lying around. Cool grandma.
The imperfections often seem to make these keyboards more interesting. Compared to all the modern analog and digital synths where they are just bugs which may or may not get fixed in firmware. Some could do with a Casio Imperfection Integer Chip.

The great images of the boards will help me rewire my MT-400V. I only payed $6 for the keyboard. I removed the chorus circuit to build a Ibanez FL9 Flanger circuit\guitar pedal with the MN3102\MN3209 IC's. I also removed most of the metal film yellow capacitors. The 2 IC's and those capacitors are worth more than the whole keyboard (if like me you build guitar pedals). But If I decide to rebuild this keyboard, this video will help greatly with such great image details. Thank You !@! lol
Well. I did try to rebuild this. I got about half way with the wiring but the filter\chorus board and the main volume and chorus sliders I have no idea. Plus other connections. My Main board is M485 MA1M(A). It's a bit different for this video (B). The MT-410v video is revision (D). What are the chances to open this casio MT-400v up again and document the connections to all the boards? 🍻🙃😍

Great review! I've just spent some time with one rescued from a thrift store, the cutoff fader was corroded which also caused waw, attack, decay and sustain to not function. I have a temporary pot in place now until I find a proper replacement fader and I'm enjoying it very much.
Anyone know where I can find a replacement fader?

The filter and chorus elevate this from humble home keyboard to something that would sound great in a professional recording! I probably would have preferred this Casiotone over the supposedly professional HZ600 that I had as a kid.
The HZ-600 is great! same engine as the HT-700 and 3000.
@@juno6 I found the single oscillator and choice of waveforms really limiting. It was also tedious to program with an alpha dial and two buttons plus the parameter values were really coarse (1-32 for filter cutoff if I recall). The final thing was that mine at least would regularly scramble its memory - a nightmare for playing live!
@@chriswareham the MT400v also have one oscillator. The HZ-600 is not super flexible, but it have a nice variety of waveforms, a Roland type filter, two fast envelopes, a cool chorus .. is like a Juno 60 but without the sliders. I have a huge collection of synths, mostly vintage analogue and digital synths and samplers.. but I always tend to go to my beloved HT-700. I have two of those, a 3000 and two 6000 (highly recommended) and the 600.
@@juno6 If I can find one that's not being sold for crazy money then I'm tempted to buy it just to see if the young me didn't judge it too harshly. At the time I really wanted a synth with loads of sliders or knobs and I now have that covered with my much loved JX-3P and its PG-200 programmer.
@@chriswareham the 600 is a compact little synth, which sounds beautifully (did you see the video?). But the 6000 is a 4 dco proposition, with independent filter per voice... Consider it too.

Every synth needs a "Waw" on/off slider.
Got mine for about £50 in 2010. I’ve used it on nearly every song I’ve recorded with my band since. Mine is very beat up compared to yours. I run it through some 80s pedals; distortion, chorus and delay make it even more flexible than it already is.
I Would find it very interesting to see a comparison between these vintage models and the new Casio CT-S1/400/500/1000V
