I have had one of these for many years. The playback preamps in these are very noisy. In fact, the noise from the preamp is as loud as the tape noise on an old tape. This did not make a lot of sense to me and years ago somehow I found out that the preamp uses germanium transistors which are inherently noisy and carbon resistors, which are also noisy. I replaced all the carbon resistors with metal film resistors along with the caps on the board and it reduced the noise by half, I would estimate. It makes a noticeable difference.
You can connect directly to your receiver for playback. The A4000S has built-in head level to line level pre-amps. You only need the R40S if you want to record.
Awesome man I love watching your video of the Teac A4000s I have a teac A 4010s had went and got one a week ago ended up finding that it had a mouse nest in it and they got into the button control wires that control the transport plastic came from a smoker it had horrible tobacco stains on it and I got to know what it's like to hear one of those Suzuki bombs go off it was like a loud shotgun going off so I got to thinking after that happened plus with all the corrosion that it had from the mice peeing everywhere on it I thought once I try to get another one I ended up getting one off eBay just came in a couple of days ago and it's in a whole lot better shape just needs counter built-in capstan belt which are ordered and waiting for them to come in other than that everything else is good to go I just want to have some of those caps just in case the Suzuki bombs go off lol
nice job
Thank you!
i followed your channel and gave it some love.
Hey - very awesome video! Nice machine too!

Hi, do you need a pre-amp (like the r40s) or can you connect the unit directly to a receiver?

@@okbridges Hi thanks. Yes, i was able to fix the problem (a loose connection of the main circuit).
Thanks.
Hi there what kind of caps did you happen to use to replace the Suzuki bombs?
Metalized film caps. I use the same type caps that I buy for recapping tube radios and other electronics.
