I spent 50 years of my life in the Roman Catholic Church, with organs and choirs and guitars and folk bands, etc. It’s been two years since I started seeking the truth in scripture, and by the grace of God became a born-again Christian, baptized into His church. At first it was a little odd to attend worship and not have instruments or “the choir”, and I was self-conscious about my lack of singing ability (in the Catholic Church I listened but didn’t sing), but I absolutely love singing hymns from my heart without the distraction of anything or anybody else. I totally “get it” now because when I was in the Catholic Church, I would listen to the music/songs and my mind would many times focus on the singer’s voice or the great organ player, etc. Now when I sing in church I am singing out loud to our Father in Heaven, with all my heart, and it is so meaningful. Those large stage performances of “praise music” is entertainment, and is not worship that God has authorized. We have a culture that constantly looks to be entertained, to do what makes them “feel good”. For me, as a former catholic who was lost and deceived, what makes me happy is pleasing God, and I am so thankful to have the Bible to teach and guide me how to worship the way He wants us to. Thank you for these videos!
I was raised in the Church of Christ and still a member. I love the singing without instruments, but if my church brought in a piano I wound still attended. I can’t imagine God condemning the worship because of a piano. It’s not sinning to sing with an instrument. If it turns into a concert I can see the problem because that would take the focus off singing to and for the Lord. These are just my thoughts and sometimes it seems our focus is in the wrong place. Thanks for your podcast.
Instruments. To have an hold to cherish? Or to not have them at all? The Church of Christ has said since its inception speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent. I prefer the latter in regards to instruments. Peter, and the others, did not speak out against instruments. Nor did he say that they were acceptable. There is nothing. One verse that I refer to Isaiah 59: 1. God's ear is not so impaired that He can't hear the praise over the musical instrument. In regards to the early Christians having instruments that is a moot point. They basically were more interested in staying alive. Mainly having money for the tax collector, food, etc.. Anyway that's my take on it. It is not a sin to have musical instruments in the worship service. Nor does it mean that a non instrumental Church is committing one less sin in their worship service by not having an instrument. Let's simply worship the one who loved us so much that He sent His Son to die on the Cross for us.
At the end of the day I believe it comes down to each person's heart as to why they worship or attend a church service. In the same way people argue they attend an instrumental worship service for entertainment it could also be argued people attend church to meet girls, or gain social status. I do believe it is possible to have a genuine harmonious worship experience with both instruments and singing. There doesnt have to be a competition between the two. I believe God gave us musical talents to glorify him through worship. I think a good verse to tie to this argument is "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men" Colossians 3:23
I agree your heart must be in it we must worship in spirit but we also must worship in truth John 4:24. I’m sure they will get into this next video and have many examples but God has told us how we ought to worship, we’re told to sing, but no where are we told we can use musical instruments. As I said they will probably have several examples but 1 good example is Nadab and Abihu they offered the wrong kind of fire as a sacrifice to God and God punished them by death. Because they did no obey what the Lord commanded them. Our singing to God is a spiritual offering to God Hebrews 13:15, God told us to sing and make melody in our hearts Eph5:19 not with instruments. So respectfully I disagree I believe the Bible teaches we can have a great heart but still worship in vein if God told us to worship a certain way and we add or take away from that Matthew 15:9 2 John 1:9😁👍🏻
There are many churches of Christ that use instruments in worship now. I have been a member of 2 congregations that have both accapella and instrumental services.
There is no instruction in the NT for how to do worship. There is no Scripture for the need for authority in worship (or anything else). There is no Scripture for “Be silent where the Bible is silent.” These are the unfortunate mistakes of the Stone/Campbell movement. This why I trust 1 Cor 2:5. “My faith does not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”
Have you not read what the scriptures say? 1 Cor 10:4 “and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was the Christ.” It was Christ that followed the Israelites out in the wilderness for 40 years. Ps 149:3 “Let them praise his name in the dance: Let them sing praises unto him with timbrel and harp. 4 For Jehovah taketh pleasure in his people:” (when they are using instruments!) Ps 150 3-6 “Praise him with trumpet sound: Praise him with psaltery and harp. 4 Praise him with timbrel and dance: Praise him with stringed instruments and pipe. 5 Praise him with loud cymbals: Praise him with high sounding cymbals. 6 Let everything that hath breath praise Jehovah. Praise ye Jehovah.” God enjoys musical instrumentation usage in worship to Him. And “Him” is Christ!! He doesn't need to tell you AGAIN to use them, because you should know that it pleases Him because He has already told you! CHRIST was there with those Israelites! “Have you not read what the scriptures say?”
Without meaning to sound hypocritical, Nothing is wrong with using music in the worship church long as the organ or piano is used and the songs are Hymnal and serene like Bach's or classical type. Accapella in the evangelical style is acceptable.
All I'm hearing is man's opinions about instruments. Tell me what God's Word says. Nothing is the scriptures prohibits instrumental music. Sounds like there is a lot of culture involved. I agree making worship showy or for entertainment only should be avoided. What if your child also bangs a pan with a wooden spoon while singing praise? Isn't that also precious? I think you are putting emphasis on the wrong things.
Why not go further? When people get sick in the NT, we were commanded to go to church elders and be prayed over. No mention of going to the Doctor. So for you people in the CoC you are hypocrites when you go to hospital when you need medical assistance.
They’re embarrassed because they know it’s weird. It’s very weird. Like the reason their churches are dying, stubborn, pressure from dead people, don’t read Psalms kind of weird.
You misquoted Hiscox horribly! He said when you baptize a “convert”. The baptism came after the conversion. That’s #1. #2 is that baptism “saved” you. He never said that. He said the act of baptism was the doorway into church membership. He was discussing church membership and how it didn’t include voting. He was not discussing salvation.
As a matter of fact the thief did. Christ had not died, and risen so therefore the Church had not been ushered in. So therefore baptism would not have applied to the thief.
@@stevesmith1493 Absolutely not at all. Baptism was not a requirement for forgiveness of sins (or covering them up) in the OT. Secondly, Christ had all authority on Earth so if Jesus forgave your sins then they were forgiven. Since He told the thief that he would be in paradise with Him (Christ) then it was so. Third, show us where in the OT, under the Law, baptism was necessary for the forgiveness of sins.

Music and the Evangelical Church by James Castlen is a "must read book for Christians" to know and understand what Christian worship music is

When is part 2?
Hey Stephen! This is Tucker from the podcast. Thanks for watching! The second part is releasing this upcoming Wednesday! God bless!

Psalms 150 gives you permission to worship God not just in music but also in dancing.

Martin Luther hated musical instruments and Jews. Do you hate Jews?
