This video is very important. I've been vegan for 5 years. Ableism is rampant in our community and as a disabled person, it turns me off from interacting with other vegans. If veganism were a cure, I wouldn't have gotten sick. And inevitably, when I say that, at least one person will say that I'm somehow doing something wrong. Unfortunately, people can get massively, permanently sick no matter how healthy they are. Abled people then promote what they think will "fix" it: veganism, yoga, mmj, vitamins, anti-pharma, positive thinking. And I think illness terrifies people to no end, so they come up with reasons why sick and/or disabled people must have somehow done it to themselves. Vegans have to do better and promote love. Thanks for coming to my TED talk :P

Yeah vegan diet could be the best diet possible but it doesn't mean that you can be well and healthy on diet alone if you have underlying issues
I hope whatever ailment you have improves soon ! When i was a carnist i suddenly got really sick for about 2 years and doctors were useless so i ended up doing a lot of research and eventially cured myself using natural self healing methods - such as liver cleansing/flush that helped me get rid of a ton of parasites.

Hey Fortune I just wanted to say thank you for commenting. Your opinion is well thought-out and a deep issue. I admit that as a generally (very) healthy person, I push healthy diet and exercise because I believe it is a good place to start. Myself as well as others need a reminder that other things in life will happen. You should consider making a RUclips video about this topic, I know I would watch it. I think a lot of people would benefit from hearing that side.

TRUTH! Thinking back, my overnight veganage was only easy because of the emotional impact of Earthlings + growing up knowing that vegans were a thing and it was healthy
+ becoming vegan in the vegan mecca that is Vancouver, BC
    + super supportive open-minded family
+ moving towns soon after so friends/peer pressure was not really an issue. I made new friends and 98% of them are vegan.
Sure, I lost weight and felt better at first but then I learned how to make doughnuts. Dangerous knowledge. And now I live with chronic pain (not blaming veganism for this). Veganism doesn't cure all. It's just a good thing to do for animals and some other reasons.
Edit: please, no more unsolicited advice. Trust that I know how to manage my ish ;-) unless I ASK for advice, please refrain.
Chronic pain sufferers (and ppl with disabilities in general) get this all the time and it's exhausting.

    • @VeganLiving247
      @VeganLiving247 5 лет назад +7

Mary's Test Kitchen my overnight to veganism was also easy b/c of open minded family, emotional impact of chickens/turkeys being ground up alive, and the fact that I had been (not intentionally trying to go vegan/vegetarian at first) eating less meat products because I was bored/sometimes found meat products to be gross if not cooked right which was starting to happen more often. And I already knew quinoa was a protein source.
So yes I agree that if someone else tries veganism overnight and are struggling if might be because they don’t have multiple factors in their favour making things easy for them.

I'm kinda torn. I think any approach that results in a decrease of animal product consumption is wonderful, but I also think selling veganism on the basis of weight loss/glowy skin is problematic in that you're only speaking to a person's desire to LOOK better and not DO better. If something else comes along later that allows them to exploit animals and look good, what's to stop them from trying that instead? I loved your honesty, thanks Rose!

YES. Veganism CAN be easy, but it might not be at first. It’s sooo true about taste buds changing!
I accidentally had a taste of dairy milk when I sipped the wrong coffee a couple years ago, and I was concerned for my friend because I thought their milk was RANCID; it tasted so bad!! They assured me it wasn’t. Which is crazy because giving up dairy cream in my coffee was one of the harder things for me to do as I didn’t like any non-dairy creams at first!
I love the message of being understanding of others’ journeys. I didn’t transition overnight either, but I got here in the end! Which is what matters. It’s hard to undo years of brainwashing. So long as someone is making efforts to be vegan they are good in my books 👍🏻

I am disabled and I get told about a magical cure once a week minimum. It makes me want to tear my hair out. Then when they hear I don't eat meat they blame it on that. The fact is my diet plays no real role in my medical issues other than my milk allergy. The rest is basically unaffected. It's a little bit easier to lose weight, but we can find tons of vegan junk foods. The facts are that I have back problems and arthritis that's caused by an autoimmune disease. No amount of carrots or whatever will fix it. Meds make it somewhat manageable, but I still haven't found the best combination of treatments. I have had this for 21 years no diet or treatment has cured me. False hope is extremely damaging to people with chronic illnesses. It hurts us emotionally and in some cases it can actually kill people. My husband had cancer and is in remission because he never listened to quacks and now he's cancer free for 3 years thanks to medical intervention. Medicine is not perfect, but I will take that over rumour and scam artists any day.

So much this! Especially the health aspects.
I have multiple chronic illnesses and while some gastric symptoms have been a bit more controllable since I became vegan a lot of vegans act like it is a cure all.
Other people with chronic pain & autoimmune disease, desperate for a solution have approached me, knowing my health history, for help & I have often had to moderate their hopes & expectations.
I still take meds & always will (though my thyroid meds have decreased, but correlation is not causation.) I haven’t lost weight (though it has been easy to maintain my pre-vegan weight loss.) I’m still cancer free but my cancer was curable & treated intensely with 6 rounds of RCHOP so I was unlikely to reoccur anyway. My skin & hair were always good (genes I’m guessing, I tend to be more dry so I never had acne.)
There are so many good reasons to go vegan but lying/overblowing things will only lead people to feel like failures (not perfect healthy, magical vegans,) and possibly give up on veganism when the results aren’t what was expected.

As a 27 year vegan, I have come to be convinced based on my observations and interactions that the stretching of the truth comes primarily in the form of health related claims made mostly by plant based dieting advocates.
The most common examples I've come across are assertions such as: "Eating meat will kill you" and "If you eat meat you will get cancer".
The honest framing of health concerns related to the consumption of animal products is that certain animal products are associated with increased risks of certain diseases, ailments, or health problems.

I like this honesty rose, I think that actually helps welcome people to the idea. Welcoming is better received than preaching. I want to reiterate that the vegan community has to be careful with promising ‘cure alls’ or ‘weight loss’ on veganism. That’s teetering on blaming those with chronic diseases for not ‘fixing’ their disease or blaming those without a fashionably thin frame for not ‘looking like a vegan’. Plants are good for you, no need to load it with pressure to conform.

This is a very positive message without shaming anyone. I'd like to add that wanting and trying to be a more ethical person isn't a zero sum game.
I have a variety of complex health issues. I tried to go vegan for a very long time with a number of diets, was supplementing, was being watched by doctors, doing all the things I was supposed to do, and I got worse. A series of different issues kept arising, none of which were corrected until I went back to some animal products.
This is that zero sum thing. Am I a horrible person for failing? Absolutely not. My broken body simply couldn't handle it and that's ok. What I did do was learn about ways I could at least make less of an impact, consume the least amount of those products, and become an advocate in different ways.
It is absolutely not perfect but I am doing all that I can in the ways my body will allow me.
I think ending the villification of people who fail or people who are not able to be entirely vegan is an important point to make.
Love the video. Love the message.

When people say “there’s no such thing as protein deficiency,” it really shows their privilege. Protein deficiency is real in many less developed countries and can kill.
But anyways, thank you rose for talking about high protein vegan diets. That’s the only way most people can eat this type of diet sustainably :)

Thanks for posting this, because just yesterday I got an arrogant, judgy response to my comments on your previous video that told me I was equivocating, that veganism was easy, that I was resistant, and just plain wrong about everything I had posted. Basically I just said that because of society and the way it's structured (from production to shipping, as well as history), in addition to how people are socialized, it's going to be difficult for many and there are significant barriers for some. I stopped responding to them because it's impossible to actually talk with someone who is arrogant, totally dismissive, and just wants to preach AT you rather than discuss the very real challenges with you. Not only do they twist the truth, some of them outright lie about their own experiences in order to sell veganism.

That was me, and I apologize for sounding "judgy." I was going on the assumption that you were like most non-vegan commenters: Insinuating that veganism is commonly impossible in order to discourage others reading the comments from considering veganism. In my defense, I did not in my comments to you, nor elsewhere in my ten year comment history on YT, insist that all people can go vegan all at once. I repeatedly asserted that it is not as difficult to most adult humans as they suppose it to be.
I notice that you never answered my question about why you are resistant to considering the possibility that veganism as an easier life change to make than you think it is, and if you inferred that this question was intrusive or obnoxious, then know that it was a sincere inquiry. I just hope that you are examining the question to yourself, because reading comments citing numerous reasons why veganism cannot be attempted is demoralizing; it sounds like you are giving up before even trying.

I feel the best when I am eating a protein based diet. We do meatless meals all the time, but I can only do so many beans. I also think that many vocal vegans (at least on SM) have circumstances that make becoming, being, & staying vegan easier; & they don't necessarily take that into consideration. If you are healthy, able-bodied, well-educated, living a middle-to-upper class lifestyle in an affluent country, & geographically w/in the satellite of a major metropolitan area, you have advantages & exposure to veganism that are not inconsequential. Are there ways to become/stay vegan if you don't have these advantages? Of course, 100%. Are they reasonable & sustainable long-term? Yes for some, maybe not for others. This doesn't even address cultural aspects, like upbringing, family, community, tradition, lifestyle, & religious/ethnic/social groups, etc. that impact our decision-making. Finally, shaming, bullying, berating, or being condescending towards others is never a good thing, nor is it effective activism. It's especially bad when it's a stranger, & you have no idea what their circumstances are. Not all reasons are necessarily equivocation or excuses...

Vegetarian and vegan diets are more common in the lower class than the higher class in america.
I don't live in a major metropolitan area, am a highschool dropout, not poor but definitely lower middle class, don't even have a car, and I know no one in real life that is vegan.
It definitely could be harder, but I think it's actually very rare that vocal vegans will judge others that are in a much different place in life, especially poorer countries. Yet I know many people who will point to how hard it is to do for people in certain situations and use that as an excuse, despite themselves not being in that situation.
Almost everyone's culture is heavily influenced by animal products in some way. Culture shouldn't be an excuse.

Your channel is my absolute favorite. I love how down-to-earth and realistic you are when promoting your message. I went vegan about two years or so ago and went back to old habits after six months of no slips. Cheese was my ultimate downfall. I've been on both sides of the conversation and there's just so much divisiveness from both groups and when vegans get divisive and attack others on their lifestyles, it does not help promote the vegan lifestyle in a positive light and that's so frustrating. I made the decision to go back to plant-based (I can't call myself vegan because I'm still working on household products and stuff and out of respect to vegans, I'll say what I really am) and it was a slow transition for me. The last time I did the switch overnight and I think it wasn't a good thing for me. Dairy was still the last thing I held on to. I struggled with the decision because it was a bit expensive for being on a single budget and I didn't manage or plan well. But I found your videos and they were so helpful. I love the realism behind everything and how you approach it. It was one of the things that helped solidify my decision to go back to plant-based. Everything in this video is so true. I hope you keep promoting veganism this way because I honestly think this has more of a chance of reaching people than vegans that preach and try to make people feel horrible about every non-vegan thing they put in their bodies.

As a long time vegan, let me tell you how much I am happy that you address these important issues. Many vegan influencers preach real craps & pseudoscience. I am sick of them, they really damage the vegan cause. You go girl! :*

When I went vegan I would eat m&ms and snickers for a couple years pretending it didn’t contain milk. Then I finally decided to stop lying to myself

Hi Rose can you talk about the non food aspects of Veganism. I do wear my friends cast off woollen coat in the winter, and I have some leather ankle boots (also my friends haha) my leather belt I have had for about 17 years. I would love to hear your opinion. Best wishes and keep up the good work, I love your channel X

Keeping the things you already have is fine just don't buy more of those products, stop contributing to it once you go vegan if you are.

I love you so much for your honesty about veganism, your videos helped me take the plunge myself to live a life aligned with my morals.
I found similar to you with attachments to food, I loved cheese so much, I had cheese every day, and when I went vegan I initially said I'd be vegan except for cheese if I fancied it. It was 4 months before I even craved cheese at all & I had 2 small bites and since then I've not been bothered at all. I've been vegan 8 months now and I'm more interested in trying new foods now and am playing with recipes too, which is new for me because I used to be exceptionally picky. Now I really love food so much more.

I had this experience with tacos the other day. My family asked me if it tasted the same? I’m like obviously it’s going to taste different than actually meat. I think what people need to get out of their head is food is going to taste different from what we were used to. It’s not bad just different. Also feels way better knowing nothing was harmed in the making!! 👍

I completely agree. My brother recently went vegan (after our whole family transitioned a year ago) and he remarked that he thought he'd feel different/better, but he was starting off on a pretty clean diet to begin with.

My mother, who is very much not vegan, tried the Gardein steakless bites and thought they tasted like filet mignon. I was so happy. Maybe I should try a taste test video on my channel with my little one and see what she thinks. Also, I definitely gained weight with all the vegan junk out there so not everyone loses weight, I agree that it's a myth everyone will magically have a better body. Good video!

OMG yes Rose thank you for this. At the end of the day we're all different and we have a different requirements when being a vegan and becoming a vegan. While some vegans think veganism is like some snap of a finger kind of change. To some of us, yes, but to many, no. Love hearing your views on this :D

i've been pescatarian for about a year, working on becoming vegetarian. i did exactly what you said, stopped eating meat completely and didn't substitute anything (at the time i never really ate fish) was constantly hungry, and then had some digestive problems for the first month. when i properly looked into things my health improved so much, i don't have hayfever anymore and i was just sick a lot in general. the only thing that changed in my lifestyle was stopping eating meat. it's been so hard to stop eating fish, but i'm hoping by the end of the year that'll happen.

I am migrating toward a plant based diet. I hoped it would help control my chronic pain. I slept better and lost weight. I had more energy. My pain level is better, but the change hasn't been dramatic.

I do miss meat, but I believe in what I'm doing a lot more, and it gets easier.

Love this video! I say the "I can eat the vegan version" thing because I've found that people often don't like the actual meat, they like the flavours associated with it. So I can usually make something taste very similar to the meat version using just spices. For example, I loved shepherd's pie when I wasn't vegan, and now I can make the equivalent subbing lentils for meat and adding all the same spices. Of course you can't have a vegan steak but for most meals you can use the same spices and get the same flavour as the meat version. Does that make sense? I think with most foods you can at least get very very close to the flavour because that's all spices and seasoning anyway

For me veganism brought on intensified tummy problems with healthy foods like FODMAPs. It helped me to know that there are kind people like you in the online community for me to feel supported while finding a vegan solution. I’m feeling better lately and know life is a journey. I’m glad to be vegan :) Thanks for the honest content and laughs

i think the one thing that shocked me the most with its irrelevance was cheese - i was SO daunted by giving up cheese...and then i just kind of forgot about it? it was so easily avoidable in my diet. it's a weird one.

I'm really glad you posted this video. I've been looking into trying vegan for health benefits, and have been a bit skeptical of jumping right on to any diet after my family pushed me on a low-carb diet and exacerbated a thyroid problem I didn't know I had. It may work for some of my family, but it really messes with me XD; I heard of problems others have had, and really feel like I might do best to take it slow, or maybe be content with a pescatarian diet, if it seems to be working for me. I despise how industrial farms raise animals (even for milk and eggs) and feel like if I can ethically source most of the products I do use, and advertise those products to others over the regular fare, perhaps it'll help steer the industry in a better direction. I'm actually hopeful a slower approach might allow me to switch over to vegan entirely, as well, without many of the problems some people have. Not to mention, I can still share many wonderful vegan dishes at parties with more carnivorous family and friends. Every little step in the right direction helps, I hope!
But yeah, watching this also made me reconsider switching simply for health, as well. I remember when I considered switching shortly after I left home when I had a problem with milk products, including lactose-free ones. (A problem that resurfaced as morning sickness when I was carrying my son) It's as nearly impossible to find a substitute that tasted any good here. I had one or two good products, but the rest were terrible! XD; I learned to love tofu, though, and it's one of my favorite foods, now, even though I never would've touched before, as it basically resembled soggy bread. Prepared right, though, it can taste like french toast, no animal products required. And chickpeas! I love them in any recipe you can make with chicken, many made with eggs and especially with tomato sauce. I've also had a chickpea "egg" salad, and that was super yummy, too! Vegan recipes are good in their own right, even if they aren't a replacement for meat! I remember seeing lots of yummy recipes on the meal delivery site Purple Carrot. My mom had gotten into meal delivery, and often got too many to use, so passed them on to me. I found that some sites share their recipes, which is awesome if you can't afford the service.
