El-P somehow quietly has one of the most envious careers in hip hop history. He's one of the most respected MC's in the REAL underground and now he's killing it with the RTJ projects. He's one of the cats I'm most proud of for his total body of work and commitment to the artform, it's great to see him reaping his deserved benefits after all the years of work he put in.
Not saying Killer Mike should be president, but this man should get 1 hour to talk to everyone and talk some sense into them. This is a guy who accepts his own faults and builds on it like Kintsugi and talks reasonable without being condiscending/preachy. This is a man who could change the world if he could talk to everyone for 30 min.
Great interview---really liked what each man had to say about the evolvement of rap, how they got together in the first place, and in general about everything else. Being an activist myself, I was really liking what Mike had to say about our history as black Americans and how we're had to fight for everything, including our right to vote, and how black and white allies should get together. Loved hearing that.
This is a very refreshing quality interview. It's interesting how different a HOT97 interview can go when they get some highly intelligent, serious, mature dedicated revered rappers.
For real--it's also nice to hear from rappers that aren't young kids for a change. People act like only young rappers have something to say (not all of them always have something to say worth listening to) but the truth is, the older you get, the more things you'll have to rap about simply because you're been on this earth longer--plain and simple.
fm232 just hearing Mike in the first 12 minutes and the part where El tells Rosenberg the truth about how fucking dope he's always been was enough to make it the best
Watch Kanye on "reality" tv if you must, but vote for Killer Mike the moment he's a candidate for office. This is the edutainment KRS preached, taken to perfection.
naw. but really. el-p loves his equipment in general, he tends to fix his own stuff and he doesn't prefer getting new things... you said it all. his look when he picks up those beats... for the record; i use sennheiser hd439 headphones.
damn el-p explained his background, def jux and the link up with killer mike beautifully. summed up his whole career in a couple mins. gunna rewatch that over and over
"Bizarre world where co flow is the new pop sensation, with heavy hot 97 rotation" Been listening to company flow since the 90s. El-P been dope. Came a long way. Do your homework people.
Never heard of either of these dudes before RTJ---actually, I'd seem Killer Mike on the Tavis Smiley show about a year or so back, but I wasn't familiar with any of his work---it's cool to see that after all the years of being in the business, their collaberation has finally brought them the major success that they weren't even looking for, which makes their collaberation even sweeter.
I saw el-p open up for the beastie boys back in 96 or 97 when he was with co flo at the electric factory in Philly. No one in the crowd was feeling him, I was amazed and been the biggest fan boy ever since and have seen him on every single project he tours for. It's nice to see someone has been down since the beginning instead of jumping on board with RTJ.
El-p has indeed been "fucking nasty since the day [he] started making records". Coflow and Fan Dam still blow most new music out the water especially lyrics wise. The world been slept bruh.
Hahaaa… When El said that, you could tell he was getting mighty sick of Rosenberg running his mouth… Mike was just waiting for his ass to get told too, lmao
'Our motivation is not revenge on our lives.' Incredibly important statement for everyone, Im working through this self-defeating attitude at this moment.
44:29 44:36 "as a producer you are constantly listening and pulling from music the things that are interesting to you." That right there, that statement right there is #WORDTOYAMOTHER El-P is the dude!
IN LOVE with El P.. not just cuz that stache.. not just cuz his voice sounds like smoky butta..not just cuz he's an amazing poet.. not just cuz he's a hard workin , ass-bustin artist.. but because his art is WAYYY bigger than any ego. 💓⚡💓
Wow that first 10 minutes with Mike was such a great conversation. Black people have been saying what is wrong with society for decades but no one will take them seriously. People need to shut up and listen.
I got introduced to EL-P through Cage/Weathermen. Went onto Cannibal Ox and Def Jux. It all started with the Wu though. Needless to say I've been a fan of EL-P for a long time and am happy to see him getting the respect he has always deserved..."Y'all got the best in the world in this man!"~Killer Mike... Agreed.
This is the first HOT97 interview I’ve watched in its entirety. Been rocking with Mike since the OutKast era, but I’m ashamed I’ve been sleeping on El up until Rap Music. RTJ got the illest beats and the dopest lyrics and that goes for every single fucking song since track one off their first album. Love these guys! 🙌🏽
A1 INTERVIEW! talk your shit killer mike. I remember hearing El-P for the first time on my older cousins burned CD's. I still cant find that song to this day but i was 6 when i heard that and im 21 now. Recognize REAL HIP HOP PEOPLE!!
the most satisfying interview since The Pro Era Crew freestyle/interview on Late W. Rosenberg. Thank you El P, Thank you Killer Mike. #RTJ3 for Platinum
One of the greatest interviews of all time. Hands down. Period. Those dudes are hip hop. El-p is the greatest rapper producer of all time. Mike is exactly right. RUN THE JEWELS
I'm glad they had Killer Mike and El P on the show, they have put out 3 Run the jewels album that are pure fire,if you like good lyrics and beats check out all 3 of they albums
MrUnoverse I was goin through the comments like "why is everyone talkin bout his headphones"? I took a closer look and BUSTED out laughing, they did him wrong with those!
Mad to think I saw EL-P in London UK at a gig at Cargo in front of about 30 people in 2002/03ish. Lif suupported with his I Phantom LP. One of the best nights to experience, as I knew EL-P was gifted beyond anything with production. His Oxtrimental LP (Iron Galaxy instrumentally) is amazing.
Love the energy and their chemistry together!!! Can't believe I've never heard run the jewels yet!! I'm so outta the loop, soon as this interview is over... I'm checkin' it out!!!
I think it's great the way they break down hip hop and the fact that it does and will continue to change. "Trap" has a place and the more older crowd needs to know it's not to be compared w more traditional hip hop no more than someone would compare metal to pop rock.
I never did really think too much of Killer Mike in terms of political activism...until i started watching his interviews...dudes one of the best speakers i have ever heard
So glad to hear a shout out to the rest of the production team, Wilder and Lil Shalimar! I still miss their band Chin Chin, but I hope they get as much shine as possible working with RTJ.
Makes me so happy that the GOATS of the current age of hip hop were at such low points before meeting and now they draw giant crowds and have made 2 of the best records of the decade
dude - the company flow connect is a dope shoutto EL-P's origin - but honestly DEf JUX label should have been mentioned more - thats kinda his bigger contribution to hiphop - the example of how to stay independent and do dopoe music in the 00's
I love that El-P was late, because Hot 97 is late on El-P. Commercial clowns.
Eric Wilke for real. Like y'all slept on this dude for nearly 20 years. Like killer like said.
TRUTH SERUM
i know this comment is forever ago - but i feel like he looks roughed up and hungover lol and was just late and probably fight NY traffic lol
tru
"Listen man, I've been fuckin nasty since the day I started making records..."

Def Jux feels like a lifetime ago. He's got a long story and it just keeps growing its dope
Couldn't have said it better myself man.
He really needs to write a book for real
Couldn't describe it any better.
Amen
Not saying Killer Mike should be president, but this man should get 1 hour to talk to everyone and talk some sense into them. This is a guy who accepts his own faults and builds on it like Kintsugi and talks reasonable without being condiscending/preachy. This is a man who could change the world if he could talk to everyone for 30 min.
Why shouldn't he? He's certainly more qualified than what we currently have.
EL-P is a straight up hip hop legend. His beats ruled the underground in the late 90's - late 2000's. Amazing lyricist too
hahaha love Killer Mike being El-P's hype man in this interview!
Love Mike such strong voice HipHop
Best El-P interview Ive seen. great to hear him talk more on his history. mans a legend.
El-P is a legend. Killer Mike is a dope, intelligent rapper. The RJ trilogy is incredible.
Not trilogy anymore ;)
Love how Rosenberg manned up and apologized. You can kill a lot of confrontation by accepting when you are wrong and publicly acknowledging.
RTJ has been the best Hip Hop duo in the world for a couple years now. If you haven't experienced a Run The Jewels show, it's an absolute must.
Mike is tired of everyone sleeping on El.
Those fucked up headphones Killer Mike has on is mad distracting lol.
DeadTheHype Honestly all of them look distracting, like a bunch of princess leias lol They should all just rock in ear headphones.
bruh i cant seem to concentrate on anything else
DeadTheHype Lmao straight up!
i hadnt noticed until i saw this comment. damn im high as fuck.
This is a very refreshing quality interview. It's interesting how different a HOT97 interview can go when they get some highly intelligent, serious, mature dedicated revered rappers.

Alexander Sandalis I been seeing you on every video I've watched today
Big Bungus he's a Justin Y impersonator! They're taking over!
This has to be the greatest interview I've heard, period.
These brothers are incredible
Those headphones must have been beat up by Dre.
feat. Chris Brown & Rihanna
They were beat by dre
This is probably the best RTJ interview out there
And that's saying something
fm232 just hearing Mike in the first 12 minutes and the part where El tells Rosenberg the truth about how fucking dope he's always been was enough to make it the best
The “sound opinions” interview is even better then this one.
I love watching Killer Mike *watch* El-P talk, its so endearing to read his face as he listens and agrees with his friend
Watch Kanye on "reality" tv if you must, but vote for Killer Mike the moment he's a candidate for office. This is the edutainment KRS preached, taken to perfection.
Mack kanye disrespect is scust
Rosenberg looks at El-P, jealous, wishing he could also be accepted by the hip hop community.
Killer Mike does not like it when you sleep on his friends, apparently.
Maaaan, you gotta love watching these two dudes talk about their music and their lives with such passion. That alone makes you wanna support them.
I died when El came in and almost picked up the beats like tf is this and then put them back down and was like screw it haha
fr
el makes shit euro techno beats of course he dont like real hip hop shit
Atoc shotta ur baiting or just stupid?
naw. but really. el-p loves his equipment in general, he tends to fix his own stuff and he doesn't prefer getting new things... you said it all. his look when he picks up those beats... for the record; i use sennheiser hd439 headphones.
Beats are trash.
3 things. 1) new headphones, don't ask 2) enough mics 3) water for the guests. Radio hospitality 101
damn el-p explained his background, def jux and the link up with killer mike beautifully. summed up his whole career in a couple mins. gunna rewatch that over and over
Man these chilli dogs got me on the toilet for days rn.. I done watched this whole shit and Im still not done.

@@curvytangerine yeah when he told him most def jux rappers were black rosenberg knew he was out of his depth...
Them headphones got Killer Mike lookin like he lost every fight he's ever been in 😂😂😂 Do better Hot 97 😂
It only took a few years and getting a number 1 album for real Hip-Hop to kick down the doors of "where Hip-Hop lives" finally. About time.
44:29
44:36 "as a producer you are constantly listening and pulling from music the things that are interesting to you."
That right there, that statement right there is #WORDTOYAMOTHER
El-P is the dude!
El-P's stance on the evolution of hip-hop is what I BEEN SAYIN
IN LOVE with El P.. not just cuz that stache.. not just cuz his voice sounds like smoky butta..not just cuz he's an amazing poet.. not just cuz he's a hard workin , ass-bustin artist.. but because his art is WAYYY bigger than any ego. 💓⚡💓

Really tho

Wow that first 10 minutes with Mike was such a great conversation. Black people have been saying what is wrong with society for decades but no one will take them seriously. People need to shut up and listen.
Co Flo + Cannibal OX was 🔥🔥🔥🔥 real hip hop
Fantastic Damage
So wonderful to see these two giving eachother insane love. Killer mike and El-p are THE combination
"You caint buy these chains on underground money!" 😂😂😂 you gotta love Killer Mike
21:46 “Then I met Mike...” Mike’s childish smile will brighten ur day
I've been waiting for this for soooooooo long.
WORD. They just ignore real Hip-Hop until it gets to number 1... "where HIp-Hop lives" pfff, where it used to live.
That was after this. In this interview Rosenberg says they have to do a podcast with him later.
Yeah man, we just need another Sway interview. They gonna freestyle? Do verses of the album? verses that didn't make the album???
Killer Mike is absolutely right. El-P is the BEST in the world hands down.
This is a fucking great interview! These dudes are so genuine, intelligent and talented and then their music is fucking fire on top of it.
No homo-I Love Killer Mike! I pray to God more Enlightened Brothers like Him come to the forefront Very Soon

god damn killer mike is a brilliant thinker and even better at articulating his thoughts. great stuff

el-p's scoff at 10:55 pretty much sums up my feelings when ive talked politics with anyone for the past year and a half
Man thank yall for doing over an hour with them. i could listen to their conversations all day
El-P & Killer Mike were destined to become greats
Those headphones had a stroke or something....
Camboy GW lmao
The dopest duo! I been following el-p since the 90s when he was with company flo
Greatest rap group since outkast imo
El is the greatest producer/ rapper ever
Love the energy and their chemistry together!!! Can't believe I've never heard run the jewels yet!! I'm so outta the loop, soon as this interview is over... I'm checkin' it out!!!
RIP Camu Tao... Would of loved to hear him feature with these 2 but who knows if he was alive RTJ may not have happened.
RTJ gives me hope for hip hop again! They bring me back the feeling of amazement for hip hop from my teenage years.
You can always feel their connection as two, but one. This is what the industry lacks, we need more of this type of connection
most i've ever heard el-p talk in an interview
Damn, gotta give props to Ebro for interviewing these legendary dudes.
Who is this Rosenberg guy? Never heard of him.
I think it's great the way they break down hip hop and the fact that it does and will continue to change. "Trap" has a place and the more older crowd needs to know it's not to be compared w more traditional hip hop no more than someone would compare metal to pop rock.
"You're never gonna learn how to progress if you don't learn from the oppressed..."
Damn.
I never did really think too much of Killer Mike in terms of political activism...until i started watching his interviews...dudes one of the best speakers i have ever heard
that love for Bomb Squad production is probably the first hook that RTJ sunk into me
best interview i've ever seen on hot97.
"You'll never learn how to progress if you don't learn from the oppressed." Interesting Killer Mike comment.
I wish I could sit with Killer Mike for an hour and talk to him.. I'm a bigger el-p fan but damn I think I could learn from Killer Mike..
So glad to hear a shout out to the rest of the production team, Wilder and Lil Shalimar! I still miss their band Chin Chin, but I hope they get as much shine as possible working with RTJ.
I think killer mike is the only rapper that rocked a volcom shirt !
I can't express how essential & necessary this interview is. Thank you. ❤️
I still have my Def Jux Vinyl Monster dog tag!! #RTJ #RespectTheJux #RunTheJewels
Makes me so happy that the GOATS of the current age of hip hop were at such low points before meeting and now they draw giant crowds and have made 2 of the best records of the decade
killer Mike is smart as hell
dude - the company flow connect is a dope shoutto EL-P's origin - but honestly DEf JUX label should have been mentioned more - thats kinda his bigger contribution to hiphop - the example of how to stay independent and do dopoe music in the 00's
