My mom was told to go on statins since she was 50. High cholesterol was going to kill her they said. She thankfully refused. She’s 93 now and people mistake her for being in her 70s and she’s outlived all those doctors who told her to go on the statins.

A dietitian told me my cholesterol was a bit too high and recommended lean meat, no more than 7 eggs a week and margarine! The #1 food for menopause symptoms is butter. Cooking with high-quality grass-fed butter, or even putting it in your coffee, may help relieve symptoms of menopause.
It’s important to remember that as you increase your dietary fat, you need to reduce your carbohydrate intake. If you keep your carbs low, you can consume higher amounts of fat. Taking vitamin D and bile salts may also be beneficial to help your body digest the fat.
More great foods to help with the symptoms of menopause:
    • Fatty cheese
    • Cream
    • Egg yolks
    • Seafood
    • Organ meats

Do you know you’ve gone through menopause? Have you had your hormones tested? I simply can not do much meat, it makes me so sick. I’m predominantly plant based. I had a hysterectomy years ago had no issues until recently when I started having some hot flashes. I got tested and found I was full on in menopause. I haven’t had any other symptoms though. You don’t have to eat meat to be healthy. I also know of people who eat plenty of meat and lots of butter and their menopause symptoms are horrendous. I think genetics definitely plays a part.

This is interesting. I am 51 and started seeing the signs of my cycle not being regular about a year ago. I had about a week of waking up hot about 6 months ago, so I started going to sleep earlier and paying attention to what I was hungry for.
I mainly wanted apples, grapes, dates and Brie cheese, avocados and started craving butter, so I just made sure I had them readily available. I’m not craving them anymore, but maybe I’ll make them more regular as it could be why I only had the hot nights for such a short period of time. My mom said she dealt with them, and severe mood swings for 10 years straight.
I work long hours at a barn caring for 30 horses, training young horses and teaching children how to ride, so I’m very in shape and haven’t ever had too much trouble with weight gain as I am pretty small. I also can’t really allow myself to have mood swings because young horses and young people need someone steady to work with, so I just don’t even allow myself to be unsteady mentally. I mainly read scripture when my mood starts to sink in a direction I don’t want it to. I think lack of sleep makes things worse as usual too.

    Cool info.
One other nutrient that can reduce menopause symptoms is Lugols iodine. Estrogen inhibits iodine so women need more than men. As a result women have more metabolic issues than men. But everyone is deficient. One correction is that the ovaries make Type 2 thyroid hormone which I don't believe the adrenals do. Women in Japan do not have the menopause issues as severe due to seaweed iodine uptake.

My menopausal symptoms have been severe for almost 25 years now. The hot flashes alternate with big chill downs every few minutes, it feels exactly like the fever and chills I got with one or two bad childhood infections. I never turned on my furnace winter and slept with just one linen sheet. One time, I got really bad multiple hot flashes while visiting a new friend at her too-warm house, when I got up from the sofa, it had multiple rings of damp, salt stains on it from my severe sweating. I was mortified and wasn’t invited back. It controls what I can wear, do and where I can go and when. I live like a hermit in the warm season in my one room with an AC unit. I’ve tried and tried to get the hormones, but am always denied because of my unfavorable lipid profile. I get some improvement now from the anti-depressant that I was prescribed for it, but it makes me grind my teeth unbearably 24 hours. Age 62, normal weight, take Atorvastatin. I became so down, when standing at the DMV counter, sweating like crazy, I complained to the lady helping me, she said “I hate to tell you this, but the hot flashes never go away, either”. I will try your remedy, doctor, it’s the first ray of hope. We shouldn’t have to live like this, if men got this, the problem would have been solved decades ago.

I’m 64. Had menopausal symptoms when I went through it maybe 12 years ago. I started eating 95% carnivore 8 weeks ago, and surprise! My libido has come back! I also feel a lot calmer; my digestion is amazing; I stink less; I’ve lost 12 lbs. without trying; my arthritic fingers hurt a lot less. I can’t eat dairy, but I’m big on fatty meat. I put a little ghee and a lot of coconut milk in my morning coffee, and those are my only plant foods. 70/30 hamburger and bacon with egg or egg yolk are so delicious!! 😋

I stopped taking them. The doctors I saw over the years wanted to put me on them again and I said NO! They never believed me that they made my blood sugars higher. I’m 51 and have been doing carnivore since October 2022, I feel great. I’m now doing BBBE (I can’t eat plant foods or fruits due to digestive issues), and my blood sugars have improved in just a few days! I don’t have peri menopausal symptoms anymore either. Eating low fat and exercising stopped working, because I was still eating too much high carbs. I do more weight bearing exercises and that also raises my heart rate so I don’t need to do much cardio. I eat healthy grass fed dairy and fats and grass fed protein and I have HRT too. There’s never been a proven link between eating dietary cholesterol and high blood cholesterol anyway, it was just assumed in the days when “non- or low-fat” diets were incorrectly considered healthier. I want to get off the statin now, thanks for the great explanation. As for not eating fats to lose weight, I find the direct opposite is true, I always lose weight when eating lots of salad and chicken/beef/tuna, etc., even with the blue cheese piled on. When I eat things like bread, rice and potatoes, it packs the weight on, even though they are “lower calorie” overall.

I can vouch that butter will surely make your cholesterol rise. My LDL cholesterol doubled after I followed the advice of Dr Bright when I saw her on Steak and Butter Girl's channel. I'm also deeper in perimenopause this year but my total cholesterol was already pretty high at 309 (8mmol) before I started low carbing. It dropped a couple of years later to 260 (6.8mmol), possibly from eating more carbs or more plant fats, but then it was back at 310 (8mmol) a few months before I had the few weeks eating a lot of butter, and now my most recent cholesterol is 425 (11mol). My LDL alone is now over 300. HDL is around 100 (2.6mmol) and my triglycerides are around 62 (0.7mmol). I had a lipid subfraction test done a few years ago which confirms a small amount of the small dense LDL, but not too that much. And a CAC scan showed about 1% build up in one artery. It doesn't surprise me after 40+ years of eating biscuits with every cup of tea. I'm going to do another lipid subfraction test again shortly now that I have even higher cholesterol. It will be interesting to see if anything changes with the small dense LDL. I was thinking just the other day though with the way cholesterol rises in menopause, that it probably happens for a very good reason. And there seems to be some evidence of higher cholesterol in the elderly being associated with lower mortality, but the sweet spot for the LDL seems to be at about 154 (4mmol) (that's just LDL and not total cholesterol, which would be higher once you include HDL and trigs. ) and that's with a HDL of over 38 (1 mmol) and triglycerides under 70 (0.8mmlol). If you have an LDL of 310 (8mmol), like I have, it's about as bad as having an LDL of 77 (2 mmol), but the worst for highest mortality is having an LDL cholesterol LOWER than 38 (1mmol).

The only thing that will help will be hormone replacement therapy. You have a 5 to 10 year window from the age of 50 to start and prevent certain issues that arise due to menopause. My specialist put me on low dose birth control pill and then eventually I will swap over to a product called Angelique design specifically for menopause. Changing one's diet can help somewhat but it does not replace the lack of hormones at this point in time.

My creamer is a combo of oat creamer and a turmeric based powder creamer, but maybe we’ll go buy the whole cow, as they say, with real deal creamer for my hot beverage choices. Even coffee has been resumed somewhat, but the sleep that night never resumed, and I believe that my coffee ingestion should be taken earlier in my day….lol. Cholesterol, huh? I’m so there, as I don’t want to even remember how much this Menopause crap is a hassle, and one wonders why it’s even called “men”opause, instead of “woman” o pause, cause it definitely puts a pause in a women’s life and style…(yeah, I know, the meaning of “menses” and all, but still…lol). As much as I agree with you about the importance of cholesterol, adding it into your diet is not gonna alleviate menopause symptoms unless you happen to be severely deficient. Cholesterol is just one factor in possibly a dozen of factors that play a role in menopause symptoms. I live in a country where one of the national staples is pork fat. People are not afraid to eat animal fat here in its purest form, salted, not even cooked. And yet there are a lot of women suffering from menopause symptoms. I think genetics and adrenal health play a big role.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to kick the ketogenic diet into action now so that when it does happen I'm hoping It will not effect me as bad. Also I have no sugar, carbs and I always take vitamin D 😊
