Was still at school but remember Marco's success in the GPs that year. 2 years later when I had go my self my own bike I also bought a Lucchinelli replica NAVA helmet, which I was very proud of. Great racing on raw 2 strokes back then. Great also to see Barry Sheene riding competitively and up there in the mix too. This vid is a true hidden gem.
This era was magic, with the bikes' & tires' arrival to the stages of awesome tech development, and with a slew of legends battling it out. There wasn't a single lackluster race for about a five-year stretch.
No launch control, anti wheelie or traction control. No electronic engine management system and no abs. Combined with a 500cc two stroke power band screamer and you have insanely good riders.
@@gsxrkz you can. Todays rider have so many electronic functions on the bike they dont have to put same effort in. Launch control, tr control, rider height lowering at starts etc etc. The old school riders had none of that. On 2 stroke monster bikes like the nsr 500. Insane riding skills they had
Interesting how the commentators in those days weren't obsessed with bike manufacturers, tyre brands etc. They just conveyed what was happening rather than attempting to show their train-spotter knowledge.
Tom Wheetcroft would have been instrumental in making this great race happen. He ended up preferring bike events as he said that the people involved were far nicer, less pretentious and more honest than their counterparts in F1 etc. I tend to agree. 😂 This was Donington at its peek as was Tom, but the great man passed away in 2009 and he's still sadly missed imo. RIP great man. I've been lucky enough to be part of that excitement back in the day. Great memories. Thank you.
This is not a GP, the first GP at Donington was 1987, this was the Jody Scheckter's World Motorcycle Winter Cup. I had never heard of it before this video. Not sure if anyone has any info?
@@grantanderson8499You've just made the comment I was about to lol. I believe it was a one off international event. As you probably remember, GP riders of the time rode in many events throughout the season, some even at Scarborough!!
I wonder if Crosby is thinking of the time Randy visited NZ and ruined Croz's pool game by running past and knocking all the balls across the table. Which resulted in Croz chasing and catching him, then flushing his head down the toilet.
Bring the 2stroke classes back as 150cc 300cc and 600cc fuel injected with ecu and traction control and the crowds will return! And Casey Stoner will too
Where did they find the commentator? His intonation is, well, sinister. Sounds like those old time yank comms with their circus barker roll up! roll up! schtick. Another thing i note in all these old vids is that Surtees was never given any more than a few words here and there. His knowledge seemed to be totally wasted in favour of some motormouth mic jockey.
Only the people over 60yrs of age would try and look for this race, stick Motogp on the front those from 2003 onwards will come across it . Blame DORNA for the name change 😮

@filipb5884 How do you know?
Fantastic masterclass in smooth fast riding by the top three.
Sheene did so well to avoid that crash and stay on himself. Got robbed of the chance for second, though.
Something you don't see anymore, that cloud of blue 2 stroke smoke!.
Gotta love those yellow number markers on the sides!

I’m struck by how good Donington Park looked in those days with all those trees in the infield, especially the big one on the inside at Hollywood.
The Trees etc were removed overtime because of the Airport nearby, a Aeroplane did crash in the middle of the Circuit in the 1980s/90s i recall.
i was there

What has changed the most are the tires, the 4-stroke engines, and the electronics.

I really wish people would learn to de interlace this old interlaced video. It looks 100% better when it’s de interlaced.
Why do they start with the engine running? Didn't they start pushing until '87?
It wasn’t a Grand Prix race but an independent race. Britain had been using clutch starts by time then.
