There’s a stat on almonds’ water usage that gets regurgitated again and again, most famously cited in a Mother Jones article from 2014. But here’s the problem: it’s based on numbers from 1996-2005. It’s simply out of date and doesn’t reflect today’s current usage. Read on…

Did you see the map of the Central Valley in our video? It’s 450 miles long, encompassing lush rain-fed areas and drier desert. The amount of water to grow any crop varies wildly through the valley. What we CAN do is compare apples to apples and tell you what water use is like compared to other nuts in California:

The data cited comes from a study by Poore and Nemecek (Oxford University) which represents the largest meta-analysis of food systems to date:

When it comes to plant milks, almonds have the advantage of growing on trees. Trees stay in the ground for decades (unlike crops like oats, rice, etc, that are only grown for a season). As a result, trees store far more carbon.

What facts? You’re either sustainable or you’re not. We still don’t know whether that 14% of water consumption is worth it. Who cares the proportion when the entire system is unsustainable.

This was very fascinating and educating episodes (part 1 & 2)! I'm actually surrounded by these almond trees in Central California and always wondered about them being called the very thirsty crop and I was concerned if it's sustainable for us to keep buying almonds & almond milk products as a plant-based person. I'm glad farmers are doing their part to save water and the bees as well. Now I have a better understanding of their farming practices and water consumption and how they are treating the bees. It was very heartbreaking to see bunch of almond trees being cut down on dusty farms during the draught a few years ago because they couldn't water them. Luckily last winter provided an amazing amount of rain & snow so we are OK for now but we should always be conscious and educate people about it. I don't know why State & County are not promoting more drought tolerant landscapes in Central Valley specially. People still have lawn grass yards and installing pools. Thank you so much for covering the important subject and hope you'll cover the heartbreaking reality of factory dairy farms happening right next to these almond farms here in the future 🙏🙏🙏

Almonds are good. All nuts are good. Almonds, cashews, which they're good for us too.

The dead trees, they might(?) be interested in a Hugelculture! It doesn't take nitrogen from the ground. If not suitable for almonds, a hugelculture is a topic if interested.
Its a travesty what we feed the cows. Everyone knows cows eat grass. Yet in the agriculture factories they eat anything that's left over from other processing. It's probably better to use the leftovers as compost for grass....
nah leftovers if used for composting will slowly emit methane. If its used as cattle feed we can get milk and meat from that...in addition to manure which can be directly used a fertilizer. Besides these leftovers account for billions of tons of material that herbivores can eat happily for cheap

I love the video but was pretty surprised to hear you say that almond milk is better than even oat milk in CO2 or environmental impact. I started googling and every single source had Oat milk as better in all ways. What is your source for that claim?

The average vegetable crop uses 12-17 gallons of water, per pound of food produced.
Almond use 1700 gallons of water per pound.
It's just irresponsible.

That's funny... last I checked, I was filming in California, talking to California farmers and researchers and beekeepers and...
You can milk an almond! 😂 jokes aside I always get so happy when I see you have a new show out. Awesome as always. Also let’s not forget the tree shaking helps the tree drop the dry leaves adding carbon and the shaking stimulates the roots as well. Those machines are surprisingly good for the tree in many ways inspite of how violent they seem to look jiggling the pants off that poor tree 😂 I love everything this farm is doing it’s very cool. People highly underestimate how man farmers and ranchers seriously love the environment I grew up on a cattle ranch in idaho and the things we do to protect the environment would surprise you. Stuff you’d have to see rather than hear tho it’s a difficult field (so to speak) to defend yourself in when uneducated protestors that saw something in the news pretend they know more than we do get their pitchforks and lanterns (hey that’s my pitchfork I need that to feed my horses give it back) but the land we keep our cattle on is never over grazed or over watered and we keep houses and building from being built on the land and we rotate on and off the land and the cows fertilize it all so perfectly their isn’t a chemical we ever need. And our cows and crops are the happiest ever they really have dang good lives. The world would be far more peaceful of a place if instead of protesting and telling people would do what you’re doing go to a farm or ranch and ride allong for the day and see what REALLY is going on. It’ll make your heart happy. Ever notice how farmers live longer than anyone? A peaceful life is a long life. And when you are a steward of the land put on this earth to take care of it with your own two hands what could feel like a better purpose? I sure love this show thanks for having enough of an open mind to really spend your timing seeing both sides of this way of life. ❤️
If the beekeepers would change the queen to a Caucasian queen, they'd forage in inclement weather! Sue Cobey a major apiarist and I think scientist acquired Caucasian specimen from Turkey, which an Winters Apiary in TN supplies them or did.

love these videos but i have to add as a Californian native, we've had droughts off and on since i was a kid and i am 39 years old. California is mostly dessert or chaparral and so we get no rain or tons of rain. Its the lousy state government who haven't utilized that natural cycle we have to keep us in water. The state has complained about droughts since at least the 90s and yet just in this past 5 years are they starting to put rain collection into our water plans within cities and counties. if we capture the rain when its too much, we can utilize it when there is too little, and now after 30 years it is just now dawning on our government to do it 🙄
California could definitely use some water infrastructure improvements to be sure!
