Today's generation does not have any idea about Savarkar and his contribution to India's freedom, not only from the British but also from the many social injustices.
I believe we have to present Savarkar without any prejudice to the current generation. By 'WE', I mean a generation born in Independent India from 1950 to 1970. We have read his work, have understood his philosophy behind reforms.

My 2 cents on this session
    1. Great conversation on one of all time great patriot sons of India
    2. Savarkar was maligned only for the reason that he was never a Congressi and he talked for Hindhus with no shame thought out life time after 1920s, mainy after the shameless appeasement act of MKG and Congress with Muslims during and after Khilafat movement
Who is relevant today for India?
Is it Veer Savarkar who propsed caste less Hindu society, a clear Indian identity defined, who batted for industrialization, modern scientific education all based on the strong Indian ancient civilization foundation ?
    Or
    MkG ?
Who advocated no violence even if you enemy is haunting you, satyagraha which is useless in modern context, a social system with varnas or castes, no modern industries and so on..
Today's needs tell us this harsh truth of Veer Savarkar as an ever green thought leader of all times emerged from India who never got his due from his country what he really deserved
But times have changed and young minds like Vikram are taking risk to explore this great leader and enlightening us with knowldge

Here is an interesting story on Savarkar and also on one of the first cases of mob lynching in Independent India.
After Gandhi's assassination, a huge Anti Brahmin riots engulfed Maharashtra/Bombay Presidency. Chitpavan Brahmins (To which Godse belonged) were targeted by congress workers and estimates say that around 5000-8000 Brahmins were butchered. The Indian Media obviously didn't report it, however few foreign outlets did reports on it and we also have the anecdotal evidence of survivors. In these riots, Narayan Rao Savarkar, the younger brother of VD Savarkar, was dragged out of his house, beaten by sticks and stones, and lynched by conngress workers. Because of the fake allegations of Gandhi Murder that were thrown at VD Savarkar. You can google to know more about this incident.

This won't be talked about.. same way Kashmiri Pandits exodus .reasons is Brahmins lives do not matter ,,,, In Maharashtra politics it is the typical strategy of Congress and left to target Marathi Brahmans specially Chitpawans as they know at the most that community will protest by writing letters and are a tiny minority.. irrespective of the contribution such a community made to independence and post Chatrpati Shivaji Maharaj era . Peshwas, Namdar Gokhle, Sawarkar , freedom fighters like Cahphekar brothers , reformist like Dr Karve/ Ranade and so on ... every time the left and Congress want to attack anything to do with Hindus they will bring in the Godse angle ! you should see how certain part of the Maharashtrian political community really got hot under the collar when 2 times Chitpawans were elected as CMs first Shivsena selected Manohar Joshi and then BJP selected Fadanawis ... it was like spreading salt over a wound ......
and even today's CM Udhav Thakre's wife is a Chitpavan Brahamin so was Dr Ambedkars !
to add RSS although headed mostly by Non Chitpawans is always targeted as " rule by Chitpavan Brahmins" LOL
Worst look at what poison people like Bamsef is spreading

Vikram - you have spoken about Gandhi, Nehru, Khilafat, and so many sensitive subjects and spoken the facts. Now SG should really do a CTC on "intolerance since Independence" and how people lost jobs by just reading the poems on the radio .
Vikram you also have stated a good fact that in India we didnt make peace with our past. The political system never allowed to accept the wrongdoings and try to make a peace. Unless we do that, Hindu-Muslim unity won't be possible. and it is also important to note - for India's progress, Hindu-Muslims need to learn to live together peacefully.

At the outset my felicitation and thanks to Vikarm for telling the story, although much delayed, of the "misunderstood and maligned patriot"(in Vikram’s words) and a social reformist.
What beats logic is that in our school days, Autocratic rulers like Aurangzeb, Hyder Ali etc (whose conduct was contrary to the nominal Human Rights standards - recorded and proven) were given prominence, if at all there were only passing references to VDS and Netaji.
Just the social reform of breaking the “seven shackles” is reason enough to promote and study VDS
Would you say that the British Raj, deliberately downplayed the contribution of leaders like VD Sarkar and Netaji in the Freedom movement (Indian) and propped up leaders of the INC, including influencing the school syllabus in an education system modelled in the British style? It then became a fait accompli for the new leaders of Independent India.

@Post Modernist could be... but the conversation here is about something else! moreover, you need not hate someone else to love yourself, of for that matter to be self-indulgent while fixing the justification on others... this is called victim-playing!

@Post Modernist if you do not know about RSS you should. if you do not know about mahasabha you should. you should know what savarkar was about, his violent and bigoted ideas of a hindu-land, his patronage of sectarian violence, his nurturing of the godses, his role in assassinating gandhi. yes, these are the facts, the fatcs of the dirty underbelly of the savarkar bigotry. read more than what meets to the right side of your eye, read from the contemporary scholars of the time, and not just sit through soft talk from eulogizing armchair privileged part-time historian and you will know what the damned truth is. I am ready to name you resources if you are ready to examine them LOL ! you know nothing about savarkar, what is your academic background BTW?
